Motorola recently updated its Android release timeline and revealed that certain devices will remain on Android 2.3 rather than receiving an upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The handsets in question are both modern and more than capable of running the latest Android operating system, however the vendor claims the latest software won’t “improve” the devices, and that’s why updates will not be released. Both the DROID 3 and DROID X2 will remain on Android 2.3, despite the fact that both handsets run dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors and were released not even a year ago.

Five US cable providers join forces to offer 50,000+ wireless hotspots

Five cable companies have announced a joint effort to provide wireless Internet hotspots across the US. Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable have agreed to let their high-speed Internet subscribers access each other's Wi-Fi networks. The effort, dubbed "CableWiFi," is similar to a deal signed between Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner in early 2010, which allowed cross-provider hotspot access throughout various northeastern US markets.

ZTE Tania coming to China soon, processor upgraded to 1.4 Ghz

Unwiredview reports that the ZTE Tania may be less than 10 days away from shipping in China.
ZTE sales director Wei Xiaodong told CNMO that the Tania will be in Chinese stores before the end of this month.
The handset from the Chinese company has so far only been distributed in UK and Europe.
The smartphone will see an interesting specs update prior to its release there – instead of a 1 Ghz processor it will now sports a 1.4 Ghz processor – an interesting choice when the handset’s main weakness is its 4GB storage rather than the more generous 8 GB or 16 GB.

Yahoo! selling 50% of Alibaba in $7.1bn divorce
Like UnlikeYahoo! and Alibaba are finally beginning their troubled divorce, with the Chinese e-commerce firm buying out half of Yahoo!’s stake in a $7.1bn deal valuing the company at $35bn overall. Meanwhile, options for Yahoo! to shed its remaining shares are also on the table, with Alibaba required to buy – or allow Yahoo! to sell off – another quarter when it floats for IPO, while Alibaba will also be able to operate Yahoo! China under its partner’s branding for a further four years.

Microsoft So.cl is slow Pile of Bugs

Microsoft opened it's social network named So.cl over the weekend to everyone. Microsoft is positioning So.cl for students and as a research project from its FUSE Labs. So.cl combines search and social networking. So.cl is an interesting concept, but that is all what it is right now.
So.cl does not scale right now. It is slow and when I tried to log in via Facebook, I got a error page, with definitely the cuttest error bug there is - but it is still an error. Inside So.cl you also get greeted with an apology message.

Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer as web's top browser

It looks as though Google Chrome has finally pipped Microsoft's Internet Explorer to the most-used web browser post according to Stat Counter's figures.
Last we heard from Stat Counter, Chrome had zipped past Firefox in the global web use stakes but was still nipping at IE's heels.
But that was December 2011 and in the intervening months Chrome has gone from strength to strength despite IE9's intervening launch and mega-bucks marketing campaign.

Back in January, word came leaking out that Sony would be launching its streaming music service to iOS in the first quarter. Well, the quarter came and went without Sony Music Unlimited being released for Apple's mobile OS. The delay wasn't too long as Sony has now released the client for the App Store. Unfortunately, the app is not in the U.S. App Store yet although it is expected there soon. Currently, the app can be downloaded in countries like Canada and New Zealand. Anti-piracy ISP system delayed
Like UnlikeThe new “six strikes” anti-piracy policy soon to be implemented by a number of major Internet service providers in the United States will reportedly stumble out of the gate. The policy, which is set to be adopted by Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other ISPs, will see action taken against users caught downloading pirated files in six steps, ultimately resulting in bandwidth throttling or even service suspensions. The system responsible for managing the new policy may not be ready on schedule, however, and the targeted launch date of July 12th may slip back as a result.

ViewSonic has a new business room projector coming soon called the Pro8300. This device is capable of displaying 3000 ANSI lumens, a 4000:1 contrast ratio, and HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The projector has been given an array of screen adjustment features and setup will be easy and quick. The connection panel includes dual HDMI and RGB ports, a composite, s-video, USB, and a component input. There are also several audio ports and dual 10W speakers in order to fill the room with sound. Right now, the Pro8300 is only available in Europe, but it will be releasing soon worldwide. The retail price is £999 ($1577).

Sony's delivering a pair of PlayStation Vita bundles to European customers to tempt cost-conscious consumers to splash out on the new handheld. You'll be able to snag a WiFi only console with a 4GB memory stick and Uncharted: Golden Abyss for €249 ($320) or a 3G-enabled unit with the 4GB storage and a download code for Motorstorm: RC for €299 ($380). There's no word on when the pair will arrive, but it's hoped that in the not-too-distant future, they'll climb on a long-haul and arrive Stateside, too.

Foxconn to spend $210M on new Apple production line

Asian manufacturer Foxconn is preparing to spend $210 million on a new Huai'an production line for Apple, according to China Daily. The plant has been announced by local officials, and is expected to consume 40,000 square meters (over 430,556 square feet), and employ 35,800 people. Predicted output is valued at 6 to 7 billion yuan, or somewhere between $949 million and $1.1 billion, with an import/export value of $55.8 million.
Construction should take place in October. What Apple products might be built at the plant are unknown; the company could use it to supplement current iPhone and/or iPad production, or it could turn it towards a new product, such as Apple's rumored 7-inch iPad or even...

Google has been the subject of an antitrust investigation in Europe since 2010, and the search giant may soon begin to feel the heat. The European Union’s antitrust chief has told Google that solutions to the antitrust concerns should be offered in a “matter of weeks”. Joaquin Almunia, the EU Competition Commissioner, says that Google has expressed its intent to cooperate fully on several occasions, and has decided to put that to the test.

A minor software update for the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, which was disseminated to some tablets on Friday, is now being sent out to the remaining owners of the device. As an OTA update, it should be easy to install. The new software version is 9.4.3.29 and the Wi-Fi and camera versions get a bump up as well, giving you some idea of where to look for improvements.
