DROID Prime is Nexus Prime for Verizon?

DROID Prime is Nexus Prime for Verizon?

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Ever since we first caught word of the Nexus Prime, we’ve been waiting eagerly to catch word or hints from Samsung. The next in line of the Nexus phones would be the first to feature Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich,” and a Super AMOLED Plus display. We’re now hearing that the Nexus Prime may actually be the DROID Prime, which would make it exclusively for Verizon.
We already knew that Verizon was passing up on the Galaxy S II, and we figured that the carrier was holding out for some more impressive version of the Galaxy S II, or GS2, but it looks like something sweeter is on the way. But because the DROID Bionic is coming September 8, it might be a while – maybe December or January – until w...

Nokia taking submissions for the name of their US Windows Phone range

Nokia’s Head of Developer Marketing – North America, has posted a poll asking for suggestions on the name of their US range of Windows Phone 7 handsets.
The names offered seems to suggest a rather tentative challenge at the US market, but they are also taking alternate suggestions. I would personally go with something like Thor, indicating power while still having Northern European roots.
What do your readers think? Vote in the poll at Polldaddy here.

It’s almost guaranteed that Amazon will release a tablet or two to go against the iPad and many analysts believe that Amazon has the best shot at dethroning Apple in this market for multiple reasons. Let’s take a look at how likely it is for Amazon to succeed in the tablet space.
Of course, this is going to be somewhat speculative because the products haven’t even been announced. Rumors suggest that Amazon will release a pair of Android-based tablets by the holiday season which are powered by NVIDIA chips and will have deep hooks into Amazon services. Let’s use that as the jumping off point.
The case for
Amazon has quietly become a high-tech sleeping giant over the last few years. While its ...

Samsung officially announces cross-platform ChatON messaging service

Samsung officially announces cross-platform ChatON messaging service

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Samsung

Samsung's entry into the already-crowded group messaging market, ChatON, was revealed earlier today, and now the company has made it official. ChatON will allow users to communicate with each other using text messages, group chats, and image and video sharing. It works across platforms, so users of Samsung's bada platform can communicate with those on Android, iOS, or BlackBerry - and vice-versa.
Samsung is also releasing a feature-phone version of ChatON that will let users of simpler phones get in on the fun, too, though with limited functionality compared to the smartphone versions. A web-based ChatON client is also in the works, so users can participate in chats from their PCs.

Nokia's had NFC handsets for a while now, like with the Nokia 6131 NFC in 2007, when the Near Field Communications tech was still an obscure but promising future path that the industry might take for mobile payments and the like.
Now the world's largest handset maker by volume announced at its Hong Kong presentation that all of Nokia's devices will have an NFC chip inside going forward, which will certainly help to spearhead the adoption of this technology, considering it sells about a 100 million smartphones each year.
Nokia's VP Ilari Nurmi also said that the NFC-enabled devices from Nokia will include its speakers, Bluetooth or regular headsets as well, and, together with phones, they wil...

Press shots of the Samsung Epic Touch 4G leak with the September 9 date on the homescreen

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

A press shot leaked of the Samsung Epic Touch 4G - Sprint's version of the acclaimed Samsung Galaxy S II, likely to be unveiled in New York tomorrow, together with the other US carrier versions of the handset.
Sprint's Samsung Epic Touch 4G date on the leaked pictures is set at September 9 on the homescreen, which might mean hitting the shelves officially on that day, 10 days after the announcement. This 9/9 date also suspiciously coincides with the rumored ETF hike from $200 to $350 for "advanced devices" which will be activated on or after September 9.
Finally, after the February announcement and April availability worldwide, Samsung seems to have ironed out the kinks with the US carriers,...

Samsung said to be considering webOS acquisition from HP

Samsung said to be considering webOS acquisition from HP

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Following rumors that Samsung was considering a purchase of Hewlett-Packard’s PC business — rumors that Samsung would later deny — DigiTimes is having another go at this potential unholy union. This time around, however, the site claims Samsung is eying HP’s webOS platform instead of its PC business. DigiTimes on Monday reported that Samsung has hired HP’s ex-vice president of PSG marketing Raymond Wah to head up Samsung’s PC business. The report goes on to claim that Samsung is also “considering purchasing webOS to compete head on against Apple and Google, according to sources from notebook players.” The South Korea-based electronics giant is clearly having issues with Android right now. De...

LG 3D Game Converter adds depth to regular 2D games

Filed in: Cell PhonesLG

Spoiler alert! Instead of waiting to surprise people at IFA this week, LG has released details of its new 3D Game Converter for the Optimus 3D early. The software arrives as part of the October maintenance release, promising to take any OpenGL game that runs in landscape and convert it to 3D. Around 50 games will come with pre-optimized settings -- the rest you tweak yourself. Open any game up in the app and it will try to split the foreground and background and recombine both in 3D. Feel your eyes crossing and a headache setting in just by thinking about playing this way? No worries, they're all still playable in 2D as well. Mouse on past the break to find the press release, which LG rather...

Verizon Wireless exclusively launching Samsung DROID Prime in October

Verizon Wireless exclusively launching Samsung DROID Prime in October

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

BGR has exclusively learned from a close source of ours that Verizon Wireless has passed on offering the Samsung GALAXY S II in favor of something even better. We reported last week that Verizon isn’t going to sell the GALAXY S II, and we have now been told why. Apparently, “Verizon doesn’t think the Samsung GALAXY S II will be competitive with the iPhone 5 when it launches.” Instead, not only is Verizon launching the Samsung DROID Prime, a device that is sure to be the new flagship Android phone ahead of the holidays, but the company will have the handset as an exclusive. The DROID Prime is expected to be the first smartphone to launch with Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich,” and we have been...

FCC warns of more phone service outages in areas affected by Irene

FCC warns of more phone service outages in areas affected by Irene

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Hurricane Irene left chaos and destruction along her trail, and the phone line infrastructure was not spared from her wrath. However, the FCC has issued a disturbing statement this Sunday saying that telephone service disruptions are about to get even worse. All cell sites that are currently running on backup power will stop working as soon as their batteries go out causing even more service outages in the affected areas.
The commission added that Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland have had their telecommunications infrastructure damaged the most – between 10 and 20 percent of all cell sites are currently out of order in those states. However, in some coastal counties that figure stands ...

BlackBerry Curve 9360 and Torch 9860 launched on Bell

BlackBerry Curve 9360 and Torch 9860 launched on Bell

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

Last week, Bell launched the BlackBerry Curve 9360 shortly behind Telus, and raised them a Torch 9860. Since the two carriers share an HSPA network, it’s no surprise that their device launches are close together, or that they’re matching pricetags at $49.99 on a three-year contract.
The BlackBerry Curve 9360 is RIM’s new entry-level offering, and is surprisingly tiny. It’s got a 2.4-inch 480 x 360 display, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, and runs on an 800 MHz processor with 512 MB of RAM. NFC is also packed in there, but it looks like carriers are locking that feature down for the time being. There’s still the magnetic compass in there for augmented reality apps, at least, but no other i...

Motorola Droid Bionic officially hits Verizon Sept. 8

Motorola Droid Bionic officially hits Verizon Sept. 8

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

The long wait for the Droid Bionic is almost over, as Verizon’s first dual-core, 4G LTE phone will be landing Sept. 8.
“On September 8th 2011, the Motorola Droid Bionic will be in your hands.” the Droid Bionic official Twitter account said.
This will end a long and strange journey, as the Motorola Droid Bionic was first introduced in January at CES with a scheduled summer release time. Since then, the Droid Bionic has gone through a system redesign, three Verizon 4G LTE phones have been released and Motorola itself has been acquired by Google (or will be soon).
The long wait may have also killed some of the buzz, as Blake is passing on the Droid Bionic in favor of the upcoming Samsung Nexus ...

IBM Building 120 Petabyte Drive

IBM Building 120 Petabyte Drive

Posted on Aug 29, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: IBM

IBM is working on a 120 petabyte storage unit, that's 200,000 HDDs used. That's a lot of storage !

Steve Conway, a vice president of research with the analyst firm IDC who specializes in high-performance computing (HPC), says IBM's repository is significantly bigger than previous storage systems. "A 120-petabye storage array would easily be the largest I've encountered," he says. The largest arrays available today are about 15 petabytes in size. Supercomputing problems that could benefit from more data storage include weather forecasts, seismic processing in the petroleum industry, and molecular studies of genomes or proteins, says Conway.
