Touchscreen laptops and tablets with the upcoming Windows 8 OS will be priced higher than their non-touchscreen counterparts, Dell's CEO said on Tuesday.
Dell will offer a full complement of Windows 8 products when Microsoft launches its new OS, CEO Michael Dell said during the company's quarterly earnings call. The touchscreen Windows 8 products will occupy higher price bands, which could mean higher profit margins for Dell, he said.

If you're sitting in front of a computer all day long, it's not at all unlikely that you're working with multiple monitors. Microsoft announced that it's tweaked the multi-monitor support in Windows 8 to better take care of those of us that just can't work with a single display.
"From the very first public release and demonstrations of Windows 8 we have shown improvements over Windows 7 for multi-monitor scenarios and have shown how we support new Metro style apps within a multi-monitor environment," said Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky "We have continued to develop and refine features for multiple monitors and have significantly enhanced the experience as we move to our next milestone, the Rel....

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

It hasn't been much of an ARM wrestle in the tablet space up to this point, and it's not because AMD and Intel haven't talked the talk. For the most part, they just haven't walked the walk, which has allowed ARM to dominate the category. That could change once Windows 8 comes into view in a few months, and if Microsoft's upcoming Metro infused OS proves popular on touchscreen tablets, you can expect a dogfight between AMD and Intel.

Intel Hopes New Batteries Can Reduce Ultrabook Cost

Intel Hopes New Batteries Can Reduce Ultrabook Cost

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NotebooksIntel

According to a report out of Taiwan, Intel is apparently looking at Sanyo's and BAK's 16650 cylindrical battery as well as prismatic lithium-ion batteries.
The cylindrical battery seems to be the device of choice due to its low cost, but its diameter of 16 mm makes it a challenge to be built into Ultrabooks, which, by Intel's definition, need to be less than 21 mm thick. A problem may also be that the market for these batteries is controlled by Sanyo and BAK and the supply is very limited. Prismatic are more expensive, but are only 5 to 6 mm thick, while using a greater footprint of 60 x 80 mm.

Foxconn to spend $210 million on a new plant dedicated to Apple

Apple’s iOS devices (the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch) are selling at pretty ridiculous rates, and the growth isn’t slowing down either. If you look at the trends, iPhone shipment volumes grow 100% year over year every quarter. When it comes to the iPad, that figure is closer to 150%. How does Apple make all that stuff? Well, they don’t, they get Foxconn to do it for them, but you already knew that. What’s news is that Foxconn is going to blow around $210 million on a 430,000 square foot factory that’s dedicated to Apple products. Said factory will employ 35,800 employees. According to China Daily, this factory will output $1 billion of Apple products every 12 months. That sounds lik...

The Amazon Appstore was updated on Monday to include the company’s popular Test Drive feature on Android devices. The retail giant previously allowed users to test apps using desktop browsers prior to purchasing them, but now trials can be tested on devices. “Today we begin the beta rollout of Test Drive on Android phones,” Amazon said. “Now customers can instantly try apps on their phone — where a majority of app purchases take place — without downloading or installing anything.” The Test Drive feature is currently available on more than 5,000 apps and is compatible with select Android handsets, however Amazon promises the feature will be rolled out to “many more” devices in the coming mont...

Mobile banking: Security flaws on 80% of iOS, Android apps

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

Neal O’Farrell, executive director of the nonprofit Identity Theft Council, spoke about the seriousness of mobile security as part of San Francisco Small Business Week, Cult Of Mac reported. “There were more data breaches than U.S. residents last year and more cases of identity theft than just about all other crimes combined,” O’Farrell said, adding that unless users are encrypting their devices, they are essentially asking for trouble. “You’ve got to wake up [and] protect yourself, even if you use a Mac,” he said, citing the massive Flashback virus that affected more than 600,000 Mac computers. O’Farrell went on to warn that, “Eight out of ten mobile banking apps have security flaws, but Ap...

Engineer Guy shows how a phone accelerometer works, knows what's up and sideways (video)

Posted on May 23, 2012 by MG2

We love finding out how things work, and arguably one of the most important parts of the smartphones and tablets we thrive on is the accelerometer gauging our device's orientation. Imagine our delight, then, when we see the University of Illinois' Bill Hammack (i.e. The Engineer Guy) giving a visual rundown of how accelerometers work. Although it's certainly the Cliff's Notes version of what's going on in your Android phone or iPhone, the video does a great job of explaining the basic concepts behind three-axis motion sensing and goes on to illustrate how MEMS chips boil the idea down to the silicon form that's needed for our mobile hardware. Hammack contends that it's one of the coolest (an...
