True to its word, Sprint's begun to issue shipping notifications for pre-orders of its beleaguered flagship, the EVO 4G LTE. Word of the impending device arrivals continue to flood our inbox, lending credence to that ambiguous "on or around" May 24th arrival date, no doubt restoring the faith of wary subs. Whether the Hesse-led co. can fulfill backorders of the sought-after Android handset is anyone, but customs' guess. So be it by blood pact, money under the table or the good graces of legal counsel, we're sure all parties involved are working frantically behind-the-scenes to make this handset's roll out an uninterrupted success.

Diablo III Now Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever PCMag.com

Diablo III Now Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever PCMag.com

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Despite being marred by launch issues, Blizzard's highly anticipated action-RPG Diablo III has become the fastest-selling PC game in history.
Blizzard said Wednesday that gamers picked up more than 3.5 million copies of Diablo III in the first 24 hours on sale, setting a new record for the fastest-selling PC game (based on Blizzard's internal company records and reports from its key distribution partners). But that number doesn't even include the more than 1.2 million players who received Diablo III as part of their subscription to play World of Warcraft for a year. Added together, a total of 4.7 million global gamers were ready to play Diablo III on the first day of its release, Blizzard s....

Gigabyte to unveil X11 on May 31st as lightest laptop ever, spooks us with talk of 'sixth element'

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Gigabyte is clearly hoping to carve out a name for itself in a very crowded ultraportable space; it sent us word of a media event for a new X11 laptop in its native Taipei on May 31st, just a few days ahead of Computex. The PC designer claims that the X11 will be the "lightest notebook on Earth," a pretty audacious claim considering the featherweight competition. Most of the braggadocio, we suspect, is rooted in the choice of material: Gigabyte is promising rather ominously to "conquer the 6th element," and unless it's financing the sequel to a Luc Besson movie, we're reasonably sure the firm means extra-light carbon fiber. Other details are scarce, including whether there's any relation to ...

Android Malware Genome Project wants to fight malware by understanding it

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Android malware is increasingly becoming a concern for users, but a team of researchers at North Carolina State University is hoping to help fight the problem by understanding it better. Lead by assistant professor Xuxian Jiang, the Android Malware Genome Project is collecting samples of Android malware in order to categorize them and release the code to other researchers. So far over 1,200 samples have been collected and organized based on features like how they're downloaded and activated. Based on research conducted last November, the team found that Android security software tools were only able to detect at most 79.6 percent of malware-ridden apps, and sometimes as little as 20.2 percen...

Nokia World broken up into smaller events, bumped up to September 5-6

Nokia World broken up into smaller events, bumped up to September 5-6

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

We hope you hadn't planned too much of your late summer around the original Nokia World 2012 schedule, because the timetable has just been given a big shakeup. Instead of holding one, monolithic event in late September, Finland's phone giant is splitting the show into smaller, more targeted events. The first will start much earlier than planned, running between September 5th and 6th in Helsinki, but don't expect any big Lumia introductions: the early show is focused on carrier and store partners rather than any opportunities for a public hands-on. Details of more events are coming in the weeks ahead, and some of those gatherings we imagine will be more about new devices than wheeling and dea...

Facebook sued by shareholders over IPO marketing

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

The Facebook IPO has caused quite a stir, although the stock has been met with a tepid response by the market since its debut. The price reached highs of $45, but has slowly dropped below the initial $38 price, currently sitting at $31 at the time of writing. Shareholders don’t seem to be happy either, as Reuters reports that Zuckerberg and several banks have been sued over misleading financial forecasts.

Windows 8 boots 'too quickly' to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new 'boot options' menu

Windows 8 boots 'too quickly' to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new 'boot options' menu

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Did you know that an SSD-equipped Windows 8 PC can boot up in under seven seconds? Watch the video below if you don't believe it, Microsoft has really optimized the hell out of the startup operations of its next OS — although that has come at a somewhat amusing cost: you no longer get enough time to interrupt the boot process. The current ability to press F8 while your PC is powering up and the ever-familiar BIOS menu prompt of "Press F2 to enter setup" will both be missing from Windows 8 computers, simply because the hardware and software have advanced to such an extent as to leave users with too little time to access them.

Xbox 360 could face ban in US over Motorola patents

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Microsoft may have scored a victory against Motorola’s Android phones in the US, but Moto has just landed its own heavy blow. A judge has recommended that the Xbox 360 should be banned in the United States following the discovery that Microsoft has infringed on four of Motorola’s patents relating to H.264 and the use of wireless tech in controllers. Microsoft was found to infringe the patents last month, but the recommendation for the sales ban was issued on Monday.

IBM blocks Siri over privacy concerns

IBM blocks Siri over privacy concerns

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

If you happen to be an IBM’er who owns an iPhone, you will no longer be able to use Siri, at least while in the office.
Facing growing privacy concerns pertaining to the “bring your own device (BYOD)” trend, many companies are attempting to figure out ways to ensure private company data is protected. Several mobile services store some of your personal data, be it contact lists or voice search history on your device, leaving certain data ripe for the picking. Siri is a well-known offender, and Apple’s privacy policy openly states that they store your Siri search items on its servers to better improve Siri and other Apple products and services.

Microsoft plans to launch its next-generation Xbox video game and home entertainment console ahead of the holidays next year, according to a recent report. The firms are currently working on a new Massively Multiplayer Online franchise called Destiny, which will be a first-person shooter with a science fiction theme. Apple, Samsung: Patent settlement talks fail

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

After two days of settlement talks between the chief executives of Samsung and Apple, the two companies failed to reach an agreement that would end their on-going legal battles over mobile patents, The Korea Times reported on Wednesday. According to a Samsung official, the two technology giants could find no clear agreement during the talks. Both companies remained firm with their arguments, with Samsung demanding Apple pay royalties for using its wireless transmission technology and Apple insisting that Samsung copied its designs. Despite both firms’ stated desire to avoid legal proceedings, the two companies will seemingly head to trial in July.
