Windows ARM support not an issue for Intel
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftIntelWindows 8
Intel CEO, Paul Otellini, remains bullish about the prospect of Microsoft supporting the ARM architecture in the upcoming release of Windows 8.
Down the coast in Anaheim Microsoft is hosting the Build Conference as Intel runs its IDF2011 conference here in San Francisco. There it was talking up its support for the ARM micro-architecture in the next version of the Windows OS.
Otellini though is unconcerned with the prospect of added competition in the Windows space.
"We've always had to have the best chip to run on Microsoft software," he said.
"When you have the best chip you win."
It's not just the architecture that's important though as there's a vast library of legacy applications out the...

Apple has leaped ahead in rank to become the second most valuable brand in the world, an interim 2011 Brand Finance study claims. Although the worth of a brand is difficult to quantify, Brand Finance's latest metrics put Apple up 33 percent to $39.3 billion. Leading the list is Google, which rose 9 percent to just under $48.3 billion.
The new chart puts Apple ahead of several companies for the first time, including Microsoft, IBM, Walmart and General Electric. Microsoft in fact slipped 9 percent in results to slot just below Apple at approximately $39 billion. Walmart dropped two spots to take fifth place, while IBM and General Electric held firm in their positions.

Intel's solar-powered CPU prototype
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUIntel
Justin Rattner, Intel Chief Technical Office, today showed off a prototype CPU with such a low power rating that it can run from a solar cell the size of a postage stamp.
Code-named Claremont the Pentium-class processor is capable of operating at less than 10mW and still run operating systems such as Linux or Windows.
"It's part of our long standing obsession with power reduction," said Intel CEO, Paul Otellini when he showed a sneak peak of the setup on Tuesday.
The huge power saving has been made possible by operating the transistors in the processor at near their threshold voltage.
The threshold voltage is the voltage at which the transistor turns on.
Today's processors operate at several...

Google: Offline support making apps better online
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Introducing offline capability is improving Google applications' online functionality, according to Chrome Web Store senior product manager Rahul Roy-Chowdhury.
One of the key complaints about the Chrome OS has been that usage of the cloud-centric operating system is hamstrung when an internet connection is missing.
Therefore, apps that can be used even when offline are key additions for Chrome, and Roy-Chowdhury told TechRadar that the process of adding this kind of functionality is also having a positive affect on the applications overall.
Better overall
"Interestingly, although offline is very nice in and of itself – in that it allows use when not connected, having offline support is maki...

AVG: Most cybercrime targeting 'wetware' weakness
Like UnlikeThe latest security report from AVG has suggested that cybercrime is increasingly targeting the careless 'wetware' rather than the computer itself - with users' laissez faire attitude to security a major problem
The wonderful 'wetware' term being bandied about by AVG is a reference, of course, to people, and the security firm insists that we are now the major problem.
That's because a third of Europeans surveyed don't update their anti-virus software (guess what AVG makes), and it is the 18-35 age group that is, apparently, most at fault.
Sophisticated
"It's clear that cybercriminals are getting more and more sophisticated, not only in their programming but also in their methods," said Dr An...

Microsoft puts Flash on notice with 'plug-in free' Metro IE10
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
In what could be a major blow for Adobe's Flash, it seems Microsoft is now distancing itself from the technology with claims that the Metro version of Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 will be a plug-in free experience. You'll still be able to view Flash and other plug-in content in Windows 8, but you'll have to switch to the classic Windows desktop in order to see it.
"For the web to move forward and for consumers to get the most out of touch-first browsing, the Metro style browser in Windows 8 is as HTML5-only as possible, and plug-in free," said Dean Hachamovtich, who leads Microsoft's IE team, on a blog post. "The experience that plug-ins provide today is not a good match with Metro styl...
