Apple sells 17.1 million iPhones, 11.1 million iPads in Q4
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In a relatively rare occurrence, it looks like Apple has underperformed analysts’ expectations with its fourth quarter results. Apple is still doing quite well with its $28.27 billion in revenue and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion but its iPhone and iPad sales numbers weren’t as high as some predicted.
The company said it sold 17.07 iPhones in the quarter, which still represented a 21 percent increase year-over-year. Keep in mind that this figure did not include the more than four million units it sold in three days with the iPhone 4S. Analysts were expecting roughly 20 million units but it appears that demand may have tapered as some users waited for the iPhone 4S to be released but l...

Apple may be building 7.85-inch 'iPad mini'
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsApple
Apple may be working on a smaller “iPad mini” tablet with a 7.85-inch display, according to a new report from United Daily News in Taiwan. Reportedly, LG Display and AU Optronics will supply the parts for the device, which will have the same 1024 x 768-pixel resolution as the iPad 2. Apple may want to enter the lower-priced tablet market in an effort to steal market share away from Amazon’s Kindle Fire device, but at least one analyst has argued the device may not be smaller in size than the current iPad. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White recently suggested that Apple might introduce an “iPad mini” priced in the “high to mid-$200 range” during the first few months of 2012, and the d...

HTC spending Microsoft’s marketing money well in France
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftHTCWindows Phone 7.5
HTC has decided on a theme with the HTC Titan, and that is big. Monwindowsphone reports the HTC Titan is being advertised in Paris with a huge billboard covering the side of a building, comparing the HTC Titan with the Eiffel Tower and sporting the slogan – “See everything big.”
They are also advertising the HTC Radar in France on YouTube with the tagline “Keeping track of your conversations” referring to the Windows Phone 7.5 threads feature.

Nokia 800 to only cost 499 Euro
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA800
Plaffo has heard from trusted sources that the upcoming Nokia 800/Searay will be retailing for only 499 Euro (around £436/$682). This is of course much cheaper than HTC’s flagship, the HTC Titan, and as can be seen in the far right column of the price list above cheaper than many other handsets also.
In fact the earlier leaked price list above corroborates the rumour. Plaffo notes the right column is arranged from high to low, and the Blackberry Bold above seems to be 499 Euro also, and the one below 429 Euro.
We are of course expecting the handset to be announced next week, and the phones to be available across the major countries in Europe in the first week of November.

HTC, Sharp, and ZTE planning NFC smartphones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSHARPHTCZTE
HTC has been coy about adding NFC to its smartphones to date, but that could all be about to change after the company, along with Sharp and ZTE, announced that it is joining the NFC forum.
The NFC Forum, the non-profit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, has confirmed that Barclaycard has also joined.
While that isn’t a pre-requisite for including the technology in the latest and greatest phones, it is one of the first steps to taking the technology seriously.
The three are a handful of the 26 new companies to join the forum that works in a similar way to the Blu-ray Disc Association.
"Our newest members demonstrate the broad appeal of the...

Cedar Trail-powered Asus VX6S netbook gets some early benchmarks
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksASUSLAMBORGHINI Eee PC VX6s
Benchmarking unreleased hardware is a dodgy business, largely because you're not working with final drivers. Nevertheless, Netbook Live's latest efforts could possibly be seen as establishing a bare minimum of what Cedar Trail is capable of. They put a 12-inch Asus Lamborghini VX6S netbook containing the next-gen Intel D2700 Atom CPU and the AMD Radeon 6470M GPU up against its Pine Trail/ION2-powered VX6 predecessor. For good measure, they also threw in an Eee PC 1215B running on AMD's Zacate E-350 APU (not the superior E-450). The PC Mark benchmarks gave the VX6S a gain of around ten percent against the Eee PC, with the VX6 coming a distant third-- not quite revolutionary, but that's what y...

Gigabyte Force K3: A Water Resistant Keyboard for Sweaty Gamers
Like UnlikeFiled in: KeyboardsGIGABYTEForce K3
If you've never pounded your keyboard in frustration or frantically mashed the keys during an intense battle, then you probably don't spend a lot of time playing games. Gamers have a tendency to be rough with their gear, and if Gigabyte's new Force K3 keyboard lives up to its billing, it could end up attracting a lot of game players who need a plank that can withstand their abuse.
This isn't a rugged keyboard by any stretch, but it does boast an enhanced four-layer frame structure with an extra chassis in the middle. This allows the single rubber sheet to be firmly attached to the bottom of the keyboard and gives the plank a bit of drop resistance.

Missing Pirate Bay Defendant Found Guilty in Copyright Case
Like UnlikeBack in 2009, the Swedish courts handed down a conviction to the operators of The Pirate Bay. Those three defendants were each sentenced to one year in jail, as well as a $1.1 million fine for contributing to copyright infringement. The trio have been appealing their case ever since, but a fourth defendant was not included in the initial verdict. Co-founder Gottfrid Svartholm was apparently too ill to attend trial, so his case was suspended. Now, the Swedish courts have gotten tired of waiting.
Svartholm’s case was held without him, as no one was able to determine his current whereabouts. Svartholm was supposed to appear in court again last year, but he was reportedly in failing health, and...

Opera 12 Alpha Browser with Hardware Acceleration Arrives
Like UnlikeIn some ways, Opera is the Rodney Dangerfield of browsers. Both have their rabid followers, and both struggle to gain respect from the mainstream audience. That's where the similarities end, and where Opera really distinguishes itself is in being relevant still today (apologies for the gut punch, Dangerfield fans). Opera Software's next big browser release -- Opera 12 -- is now available as an alpha build, and with it another major development.
Opera 12 alpha supports full hardware acceleration with WebGL. This isn't the first browser to support hardware acceleration, but it's perhaps more liberal in its use by offloading the whole user interface to the GPU and not just specific elements of ...

Google Chrome Now Has 200 Million Users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
According to the company, there are now 200 million active Chrome users. Back in May of this year, the number was at 160 million. In December 2010, the company said it had about 120 million users.
Market share data from StatCounter estimates Chrome's share at about 23.6% for September. Firefox was at 26.8% and IE at 41.7%. In October, it appears that Firefox will hold its market share stable, while Chrome will be climbing to close to 25% and IE may be dropping below 40%.
There is also indication that Chrome will soon be released for Android as early as next week as part of the Ice Cream Sandwich release. Google has not released usage numbers for Chrome OS, which could also be lifting Chrome ...

IP Firm Sues Over Core Products from Dell, Acer, Asus
Like UnlikeFiled in: DellASUSAcer
In three separate filings, Round Rock Research claims that Acer, Gateway and Dell are violating eight of its patents, while Asus is infringing on nine.
All patents appear to have been acquired by Round Rock Research in a package deal from Micron on December 23, 2009. They affect inventions that were filed with the U.S. Patent Office between 1992 to 2005. The eight patents mentioned in the suit mainly refer to memory and storage technologies and include:

Some iPhone 4S owners reporting screen quality issues
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Some iPhone 4S buyers are reporting problems with subpar screens, Apple's support forums indicate. When issues are present, the overriding complaint is of a yellow tint, especially notable when a 4 and 4S are compared side-by-side. People are also upset, however, at problems with poor contrast and/or washed-out colors.
The issue may mark the return of a problem that affected the iPhone 4 early into its lifecycle. At the time devices were being shipped so quickly after assembly that screens continued to show signs of a yellow adhesive. The residue would eventually disappear though, leaving behind normal phones.

Apple’s iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units over the past weekend and due to the immense demand, the device is now available in stores by reservation only.
