Samsung phone lands on the FCC table, GS-three guesses which oneEngadget

While we're no champions at "pin the tail on the donkey" we're pretty sure we're close to the mark with this one. An FCC report for a new Samsung phone bearing an SGH-I747 model number? Sporting HSPA+ and LTE bands that play nice with AT&T, Rogers, Telus and Bell? While it's not explicit, if this doesn't sound like the GSIII coming to town, we don't know what does. After all, it's not like we didn't know it was on its way.

Untethered jailbreak tool released for iOS 5.1.1 devices, including new iPad, iPhone 4S
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsAppleiPhone 4siPad 3
This week, a new untethered (meaning you don't have to plug the device into the computer each time you restart it) jailbreak tool was released for devices running iOS 5.1.1. Developed by the Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team, the Absinthe 2.0 tool will jailbreak most iOS devices, including the Apple iPhone 4S, new Apple iPad, and the latest generation iPod touch.. The only notable iOS device that it doesn't yet work with is the 2012 version of the iPad 2, which features a different processor than the 2011 model. Head over to the source link to check out the instructions on how to jailbreak your iOS device using the tool, and, as always, be aware that you could do irreparable harm to your ...

Google Wallet: one year later
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The rumors and leaks go back a bit further, but it was a year ago today that Google officially revealed its Google Wallet mobile payment service -- a platform that the company is still betting big on, even if it may be slightly reconsidering the way it does business. While it might not have taken off quite as quickly as Google would have liked, the past year has still been a fairly eventful one for the service -- albeit occasionally for reasons the company would prefer you forget -- and the next year proves to be even more challenging as the service faces increased competition. Read on for a look back at how we got here, and what lies ahead for both Google Wallet and mobile payments in gener...

Kanzi: ZTE's 3D UX for ICS handsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: ZTE
To skin or not to skin? That's hardly ever a question for Android OEMs. And, in the case of some Chinese manufacturers, that mark of software differentiation comes in the form of three dimensions. We've already seen Huawei trot out its (optional) 3D UX for the Ascend P line, and now it appears ZTE's ready to follow suit with a custom interface powered by Rightware. The Kanzi UI, as it's called, will come pre-loaded on all of the company's smartphones currently shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich, treating users to a 3D homescreen experience and giving developers a unified platform to port their designs. It's good news if you're a fan of that overlaid visual gimmickry, but we much prefer our Goo...

Silicon Image pushes new MHL 2.0 chips for phones and HDTVs with 1080p60 video, faster charging
Like UnlikeAfter taking a few years to get off of the ground, MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) technology is now found in many modern phones as well as HDTVs from LG, Toshiba and Samsung. Now, Silicon Image has announced its second generation of chips to go in those devices with enhanced features. MHL if you'll recall, lets mobile devices connect to HDTVs via HDMI, while passing power and control signals along with the video. According to Silicon Image its new chips, the SiI8240 MHL transmitter (for phones, tablets, cameras and laptops) and SiI9617 MHL Bridge (for HDTVs, monitors and projectors) and dual-mode IP core (like the one in Samsung's Galaxy S II) upgrade the previous generation's capabilitie...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSony EricssonGoogleXperia PLAYAndroid 4.0
Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.

Intel releases native x86 Android 4.0 emulator for faster app debugging
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsIntelGoogleAndroid 4.0
Android developers have gotten a nice surprise today: an Android 4.0 x86 image has been released for the platform's software development kit. For the vast majority of people developing on computers that use x86 processors, the update will let the emulator run at native speeds and with fewer bugs, since it will be running native x86 code rather than code from the ARM platform. Developers can install it by refreshing the SDK Manager, then selecting the x86 image under Android 4.0.3. Downloading the image may take some time due to high demand, though. For developers, this means a better system for building and testing apps. Intel's x86 architecture is ubiquitous, and this upgrade will complemen...
