Ultra high-speed Internet funding announced: $200 million up for grabs

German court says Motorola violates Microsoft text messaging patent

Microsoft won a small victory in its patent battle with Motorola. A ruling handed down by The Munich Regional Court said Motorola violated a text messaging patent held by Microsoft. The patent describes a method of “communicating multi-part messages between cellular devices using a standardized interface.” Microsoft can enforce a ban on the sale of Motorola Android phones in Germany, but the Redmond company will have to post a 25 million euro ($31.3 million) bond first.

At one time the Enyo app framework was supposed to help webOS run faster and on a wider variety of devices, but as HP continues to struggle, reports have surfaced from The Verge and AllThingsD that much of the team behind it, including leader Matthew McNulty, has been hired away by Google. Numbering a half dozen or so, the immediate danger is the effect this might have on HP's efforts to open source webOS, but in a statement the company indicated it remains on track and will stick to the roadmap it announced in January. Verizon claims 36 buyers interested in its 700MHz spectrum

As part of its plan to gain FCC approval for the purchase of AWS band spectrum from a group of cable companies, Verizon is offering to sell certain blocks of its 700MHz spectrum that other companies could use for LTE(INFO) based 4G network services, just as it and AT&T have done. In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, Verizon says that it has lined up 36 potential buyers for the spectrum - all of which are restricted from speaking of the deal by a non-disclosure agreement, of course.

Yahoo! Axis security issue discovered
Like UnlikeYahoo! launched its Axis search browser for iOS, PCs, and Macs this morning, but did it rush it out the door? Some have found it strange how Yahoo! offers Axis as an extension rather than an actual browser, and that may have lead to a security issue with Chrome. Extensions are signed with a security certificate so that Google knows it comes from a trusted source. Yahoo! seem to have included its own private certificate in the browser code for all to see.

Bing Maps is to receive a welcome boost courtesy of Nokia, as the latter’s traffic information and geocoding algorithms are integrated into the mapping service.
For those who don’t know, geocoding is a series of algorithms that are created by taking latitude and longitude information and then pinpointing a more accurate address for improved routes and directions.

While Dell has previously promised a Windows 8 enterprise tablet "on the exact day" the new operating system debuts, we haven't heard any firm plans for its consumer offerings.
