Gingerbread is now the dominant Android version
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 2.3
Android 2.3.x has slowly caught up with updates arriving on most contemporary handsets and now it has become the most popular version of Google's platform. Android 2.3.x devices make up 44.4% of all gadgets running the green robot as their OS, with Froyo starting to quickly fade away. Currently, 2.2 devices account for 40.7% of all Androids.
With Gingerbread and Froyo being the most popular versions, it should be noted that there's still a 10.7% share of Androids running Eclair.
Older versions have largely been phased out and Honeycomb remains pretty unpopular with a total share of just 1.9%.
What everyone is looking forward to, though, is a clear statement from manufacturers regarding an u...

HP Pre 3 death not exaggerated, FCC autopsy reveals Verizon life that never was
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHPVerizon WirelessPre3
While we will never see the Pre 3 adorning the AT&T shelves of phone stores, the FCC at least had the courtesy to investigate HP's final webOS device in detail, though we doubt they were able to conclude the precise cause of death. The full devastating teardown reveals some Sandisk flash storage, and a tightly packed interior. There's another interesting detail found in those external images, too. As a previous leak had suggested, this model was destined for the Big Red, with a not-so enigmatic Verizon logo etched into the metallic slide-out backing. The full internal rundown is in the gallery below. Tissues are in that box to your right.

The latest data from Google's own Android Developer site shows that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system has reached an important milestone, as it is now more prevalent than the older Android 2.2 Froyo version.
According to the data, which looks at devices that have accessed the Android Market within the past two weeks, 2.3 Gingerbread is now installed on 44 percent of Android smartphones and tablets, compared to 40.7 percent for 2.2 Froyo. Gingerbread has gained almost 7 percent of market share in the past month. Older versions, like 2.1 Eclair and 1.6 Donut, maintain 10.7 percent and 1.4 percent market share, respectively.

AT&T says T-Mobile deal will close later than expected
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
AT&T has pushed back the date it expects to close the books on its planned merger with T-Mobile and spectrum purchase from Qualcomm, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The carrier had originally planned to close both acquisitions by March of 2012, although it now expects the required approvals to take as much as three months longer to gain. The carrier now says the deal should be approved by the end of the first half next year. AT&T recently ran into speed bumps with both deals. In August the Federal Communications Commission announced that it would review both AT&T’s spectrum purchase from Qualcomm and its merger with T-Mobile USA at the same time. Later that month, the U.S. govern...

Motorola wins injunction against Apple in Germany? [updated]
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
FOSS Patents is reporting that Motorola has won an injunction related to a patent infringement lawsuit in Germany, Europe’s largest market. According to the ruling by a Mannheim Regional Court, Apple is barred from selling any mobile device that infringe on two Motorola Mobility patents filed in April of 2003. Motorola is also reportedly owed for past damages. One of the patents in question relates to GSM, UMTS and 3G, and it is unclear what the second patent covers. If Motorola Mobility actually has won an injunction against all of Apple’s mobile devices in Germany, it would be a huge win for the company and Google’s Android platform as well. We’ll keep you updated.

AT&T’s first two 4G LTE-enabled smartphones are now available for purchase, and subscribers looking to be among the first to own these powerful new Android devices are in for a pleasant surprise. Announced just last week, the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid feature Google’s Android Gingerbread OS and specs that place them on par with most modern high-end handsets. They were also announced with high-end price points; the Vivid was unveiled at $199.99 and the Skyrocket was given a $249.99 price tag. Both phones are now on sale as promised — they became available a day early on Saturday, in fact — but each smartphone is priced $100 lower than expected on AT&T’s website. Read on for ...

Eric Schmidt tells senators that Siri could be a "threat" to Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google Chairman Eric Schmidt has seen the future of search, and he is afraid that it might just be a disembodied voice. Responding to follow-up questions written by U.S. senators on the anti-trust committee following a September hearing, Schmidt calls Apple's voice activated personal assistant Siri a "significant development" that could overtake Google's search engine in the future. Writing about Siri, Schmidt said, "Even in the few weeks since the hearing, Apple has launched an entirely new approach to search technology with Siri, its voice-activated search and task-completion service built into the iPhone 4S." The executive noted how two publications have called Siri a "Google-Killer" and ...

HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket go on sale, lead AT&T's march on LTE
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungHTCAT&TGalaxy S IIVivid
You didn't expect Ma Bell to open its first LTE markets without tossing in a few 4G friendly toys, did you? Of course not, we told you as much last week -- but today things get official: The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid (formerly known as the Holiday) are ready to take Ma Bell's new LTE nodes for a spin. Not much has changed since the last time we saw these phones -- the Skyrocket still knocks the Galaxy S II's screen size and processor speed up a notch (a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus Display and 1.5GHz CPU, for those of you keeping track), and the Vivid still has a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1080p HD video recording via an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2GHz CPU. What's new? AT&T is curren...

HTC announces specifics on Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades, includes Rezound
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleRezoundAndroid 4.0
It's been a little over two weeks since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich along with its first ambassador, the Galaxy Nexus. Since then, a few manufacturers have shared their intent to bring Android 4.0 to specific devices. HTC was initially rather vague about its upgrade plans -- no doubt faced with the daunting task of keeping Sense relevant in light of ICS' vast design improvements -- but tonight the Taiwanese giant issued an official statement on Facebook outlining specifics on its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades. Basically, it looks like most (if not all) of HTC's high-end phones since the introduction of the Sensation will be getting a taste of Google's latest tasty treat early next year,...

Canon has a new 'EOS Movies' DSLR on the way too: 4K video, 35mm full frame sensor
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasCanon4K
Canon has more on the way from its newly launched EOS Movies lineup than just the C300, as shown by this new prototype DSLR. Promised to be "ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications" this camera packs a 35mm full frame image sensor capable of shooting Motion-JPEG encoded 4K video at 24fps. The press pics show it fitted with both EF 50 and new Cine 24 lenses, as Canon looks to blend the success of the 5D MK II with RED-rivaling video capabilities. The director of House shot an episode on that camera already and called it the future, which appears to be arriving sooner rather than later. Check out the press release after the break for the spe...

Canon launches C300 cinema camera, prepares to take on Red Scarlet and Arri Alexa
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasCanonEOS C300
Well, we have to hand it to Canon -- this was one tight-lipped product launch. The imaging company just unveiled its C300 cinema camera at Hollywood's Paramount Studios, in front of a crowd of hundreds of journalists and film industry elite, including Martin Scorsese. Canon is no stranger to the professional photography community, but it has yet to make a name for itself in Hollywood, where cameras such as the Arri Alexa and RED EPIC dominate the digital filmmaking world. The C300 may not appear to be overwhelmingly powerful on paper -- stock features include an EF or PL mount (not both), 1080p capture, a pair of CF card slots, timecode and HD-SDI output -- but judging by the sample films we...

Facebook's "Open Compute" Server tested
Like UnlikeFacebook had 22 Million active users in the middle of 2007; fast forward to 2011 and the site now has 800 Million active users, with 400 million of them logging in every day. Facebook has grown exponentially, to say the least! To cope with this kind of exceptional growth and at the same time offer a reliable and cost effective service requires out of the box thinking. Typical high-end, brute force, ultra redundant software and hardware platforms (for example Oracle RAC databases running on top of a few IBM Power 795 systems) won’t do as they're too complicated, power hungry, and most importantly far too expensive for such extreme scaling.
Facebook first focused on thoroughly optimizing their...
