Samsung Galaxy S II nearly explodes while in a man's pocket
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
A man by the name of Silly22 on the XDA Developers forum recently posted images of a badly damaged Samsung Galaxy S II along with a mildly terrifying story of why it looks the way it does. The story goes something like this: a friend of Silly22 had the smartphone pictured below in his pocket when all of a sudden he felt a burning sensation in his leg. When he pulled the device out of his pocket smoke started coming out. The victim (how often do we get to use that word?!) says that his device is barely 2 weeks old and that he wasn’t even using it that heavily.

Android app can detect Carrier IQ on your phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Carrier IQ is the new hotness when it comes to creepy tactics to get a hold of user data, but there is a new app for Android phones which will let you know whether or not the software is running on your device.
The app is courtesy of François Simond, a.k.a Supercurio, who put it together in just four hours. Unfortunately, the app will currently only detect whether or not Carrier IQ is on your device, but can't do anything about it. Of course, being the good samaritan that he is, Simond has put the code for the app on Github, so other developers will surely expand on his work. Simond also warns that anti-Carrier IQ fixes are not detected and can lead to false positives, but these issues sho...

Australian court extends Samsung Galaxy Tab ban
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1
Samsung was dealt another setback in its attempt to sell the Galaxy Tab in Australia. Instead of launching the Galaxy Tab Friday at 4 pm, the Korean company must now wait until December 9th. It’s a significant setback that’ll cost Samsung a week’s worth of holiday sales.
Earlier this week, the Australian Supreme Court overturned the injunction that banned sales of the tablet device. Apple appealed this decision and, just as Samsung was ready to kick off sales, the Cupertino company was granted a week long extension to argue its case. This delays the Galaxy Tab’s launch by yet another week and leaves Samsung and its customers in the lurch.

Facebook status updates can now be up more than 60,000 characters
Like UnlikeYou may or may not be aware of this, but up until very recently, a Facebook status update had a 5,000 character limit, meaning if you really wanted to let your friends see your magnum opus update at 2:34 am on a Tuesday, you needed to use some other less restricted medium.
Well, no longer. As of yesterday, an update Facebook pushed out to users also included an upping of that limit to something beyond 60,000 characters, a far more lax limitation, and one that will no doubt encourage the creativity of many, many, many of the service's users. We'll leave it to you to decide whether or not the change is welcome.

Amazon launches Spanish and Italian Kindle stores and native-language Kindle hardware
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
Amazon's expanding the Kindle empire across Europe: after arriving in Germany and France earlier this year, Amazon is now launching in Spain and Italy. Spainish readers now have access to over 22,000 Spanish ebooks in the Kindle store, while Italy is getting 16,000 Italian ebooks; both countries are getting access to hundreds of free native-language ebooks as well. In all, Amazon's offering readers in those countries about 900,000 books, so the majority of the selection is still English-only. As for hardware, the standard Kindle is in stock now, priced at €99. That'll have to do for this holiday season — there's still no word on when the Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire are coming to Europe.

Nokia Siemens drops WiMax business, NewNet picks it up
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIASiemens
Nokia Siemens Networks is selling its WiMax business to NewNet Communication Technologies, in a further sign that the long-term future is not looking too bright for WiMax in Europe and the States. NewNet didn't disclose details of the deal, but expects to close it out by the end of the year and take on around 300 employees. The company said it was interested in providing WiMax infrastructure on a global basis, but Nokia Siemens clearly didn't consider the technology a priority in its restructuring efforts — especially with an LTE Lumia 800 likely making its way to the US next year.

Ein Handy to rule them all? If you're living in the Googleverse, then yes. The Galaxy Nexus has already offered itself up for rabid consumption throughout the UK and now, it's sending das Deutsche Volk into a tizzy. Various reports have the handset leapfrogging its German release date by a week and landing on shelves at consumer electronics chain, Media Markt, although prices seem to be all over the place -- ranging from €629 (about $847) to €529 (about $713). It doesn't appear all local outlets have the devices in stock, but don't let that hold you back from trying your luck anyway. Now, if only us statesiders could get a firm launch date for Rubin's frosty treat.
