Cyanogen drops support for Samsung Vibrant

Cyanogen drops support for Samsung Vibrant

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

It seems that not every problem has a solution, not even for the masterminds of Team Douche who create the CyanogenMod for various devices. The team has given up attempts to build new ROMs for the Samsung Vibrant. The message came from Abhisek Devkota a member of the Hacksung team, who sites public safety reasons for dropping support.
Apparently, the team simply cannot figure out how Samsung routes emergency 911 calls. This has been a continuing problem for ROMs built on the open source code for the Vibrant that was released by Samsung. The Cyanogen team has not been able to crack the various layers for the radio interface and how it interacts with audio, and has not been able to reverse-en...

EU regulators temporarily suspend review of Google's planned Motorola Mobility buy

European Union regulators have temporarily stopped investigating Google’s planned $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility until more information is made available. The antitrust investigation will resume after “certain documents that are essential to its evaluation of the transaction” are provided to the European Union, Amelia Torres, a spokeswoman for the government agency explained. The suspension went into effect on December 6th and it is unclear how long it will last. Bloomberg said the regulatory investigation is expected to finish up sometime next year. Google announced on August 15th its intentions to purchase Motorola Mobility. At least one expert has said the deal will be a “...

Update for Adobe Flash Player fixes issues on Samsung Galaxy S II and more

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

While Adobe isn't making any broad updates for the Flash Player after its update for Ice Cream Sandwich flavored devices, it did promise to support the application. Now available in the Android Market, Flash Player version 11.1.111.5 repairs video streaming problems found on the Samsung Galaxy S II. The update also adds support for 1080p video on devices powered by the quad-core Tegra 3 like the Asus Transformer Prime. Even if you don't have those devices, because of security enhancements installed on the update, Adobe recommends installing the update.

Nokia Lumia 800 may get DLNA support

Nokia Lumia 800 may get DLNA support

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

It's been done by other manufacturers and it seems likely that Nokia will be doing it too: bringing DLNA support to the Nokia Lumia 800 via an app from the Windows Phone Marketplace. This is still a rumor at this point, and possibly not even a very well sourced rumor, but still one that seems pretty believable.
DLNA is one of the top notch features for electronics these days. It is really just a compatibility standard set forth by the Digital Living Network Alliance, so all of your media-filled devices can play well together on your home network. This means being able to share music or video across your computer, mobile devices, TV and stereo. Luckily, even if a device doesn't come with the...

ASUS Transformer Prime launch delayed indefinitely, report says

ASUS Transformer Prime launch delayed indefinitely, report says

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

ASUS has reportedly delayed the launch of its highly anticipated Transformer Prime convertible tablet. ASUS’s new tablet was expected to launch this week but Wi-Fi issues have seemingly set things back. ”The WiFi range on the TF201 did not meet our quality standards,” a spokesperson from ASUS Canada reportedly told Engadget in a statement. The spokesperson continued, saying that ASUS will not launch the slate until the wireless performance issues are fixed. The Transformer Prime will be among the first quad-core tablets to reach market when it finally hits store shelves, though ASUS did not indicate how long its solution for these wireless issues would take to implement. Pre-orders are still...

BlackBerry Bold 9790 will be available as a SIM-free option in the UK starting on January 9

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last month, we reported that RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9790 was expected to become available in the UK sometime in January, following its scheduled release in Indonesia and Singapore this month, but we’ve been in the dark on an exact date to that reality.
Fortunately, UK consumers are now given a clear date of January 9th – that’s when the SIM-free version of the latest Bold handset is expected to become available for purchase in the good old UK. Interested in picking up this one? Well, retailer MobileFun will begin accepting orders for the smartphone on that date, where it’s given a price tag of £399.95 ($624). Indeed, it’s rather pricey to say the least, but considering it’s a SIM-free version...

Europe puts Google's acquisition of Motorola on hold

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MotorolaGoogle

Google’s massive $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola is still pending reviews in various markets, but in Europe it has temporarily been put on hold as the European Commission (EC) required more documents from the companies.
The EC is probing the deal for threats to competition and has halted the review process until it has been granted “certain documents that are essential to its evaluation of the transaction,” EC spokeswoman Amelia Torres said. The deal was suspended on December 6th.
Earlier Motorola clarified that the need for institutional approval might delay the closing of the deal to 2012. The search giant is planning the purchase in an attempt to get its Android patent portfolio for...

Samsung claims record 300 million mobile sales this year

Samsung claims record 300 million mobile sales this year

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesSamsung

Add together ten million Galaxy S IIs, a dollop of Galaxy Nexii, a gargantuan gathering of Galaxy Notes and a healthy serving of Badas, and what do you get? 300 million handset sales so far in 2011, that's what. And Samsung claims that makes this the best year in its mobile-making history, surpassing 2010 by a whopping 20 million. Of course, more sales doesn't necessarily translate into greater revenue -- Nokia is still the world's largest manufacturer by volume and is a case in point. Nevertheless, we'll know more when Samsung reveals its Q4 earnings next month.

Toshiba's Thrive 7-inch tablet goes on sale today for $379.99

Toshiba's Thrive 7-inch tablet goes on sale today for $379.99

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Toshiba promised two things when it announced its Thrive 7-inch tablet in September: an early December arrival and a less-than-$400 price. And today it's delivering on both of those. The 16GB, Android 3.2, Tegra 2-powered tablet should be popping up in stores today for $379.99. The 32GB version will be selling for $429.99. For those that want a refresher, the tablet is a lot like the orginal Thrive in terms of design (it even has a 1280 x 800 resolution 7-inch display), though we're hopeful the charging issues and poor battery life have been excised. Our review unit just arrived, so you may just want to hold tight for that before you start pull out the plastic, but if you simply can't wait t...

Fujitsu Semiconductor and SuVolta have demonstrated a new process and technology that promises to greatly reduce the power consumption of SRAM. The new technology could be used to create SRAM capable of operating at ultra-low-voltages of 0.4V, less than one-half of today's power consumption levels. The new lower voltage SRAM could soon be seeing its way into mobile devices, tethered servers, and networking equipment.

Kindle Touch jailbroken with simple MP3 hack

Kindle Touch jailbroken with simple MP3 hack

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Just because the Kindle Touch isn't Android-based doesn't mean that it wouldn't be fun and potentially useful to gain root on it. Developer Yifan Lu has managed to do just that and has released the jailbreak tool for the e-reader in a format that might surprise you: an mp3 file. It turns out that the Kindle Touch's operating system is slightly different from previous Kindles in that it uses significantly more HTML in its UI instead of Java, which apparently means that — for now — it's much easier to exploit. Lu was able to put the rooting commands in the ID3 comment tag of an mp3 file, complete with a "jailbroken' splash screen.

HP's Hackable Printers: The Lawsuit

HP's Hackable Printers: The Lawsuit

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HP

Three days ago, we brought you news of how researchers have made proof-of-concept attacks on HP printers by reprogramming their firmware. Among other things, these attacks could deliberately cause the fuser in a printer to overheat and singe the paper, until shut down by a built-in unoverridable thermal switch, preventing a fire. Now, in light of this, a lawsuit has been filed by David Goldblatt of New York, seeking damages for fraudulent and deceptive business practices and is looking for class action status: "As a result of HP's failure to require the use of digital signatures to authenticate software upgrades, hackers are able to reprogram the HP Printers' software with malicious software...

Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro accessory has 480-hour battery life?

Nintendo 3DS Circle Pad Pro accessory has 480-hour battery life?

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

The Nintendo 3DS has had its share of problems, not least its fleetingly short battery life. It sounds like the upcoming 3DS Circle Pad Pro accessory may not be sharing in its host's plight, however. An Andriasang reader with visual proof of owning the accessory — just a tad earlier than its December 10th Japanese launch — says the bundled manual claims it'll survive 480 hours on a single AAA cell. We're still slightly mystified as to why Nintendo didn't use the opportunity of a bulky accessory to extend the stamina of the console itself, but if this pans out, at least the cost has been kept relatively low. The Circle Pad Pro launches in Japan this Saturday for 1,500 yen, or 6,990 yen bundle...

Google-Funded Study Says Firefox Less Secure than Internet Explorer

Google-Funded Study Says Firefox Less Secure than Internet Explorer

Remember when you downloaded Firefox circa 2004 because Internet Explorer was inundating Windows XP with viruses? Those days have long since passed, and according to a Google-funded study carried out by Accuvant, Firefox is now among the least secure web browsers. Naturally, Chrome is the best.
Obviously this has to be approached with a fair amount of skepticism, Forbes points to Accuvant's industry cred for objective reports on security. his particular report calls out Firefox's inability to sandbox code in the browser, thus preventing hackers and malicious code from gaining access to the rest of someone's operating system.
