Wikipedia threatens blackout over anti-piracy bill

Wikipedia threatens blackout over anti-piracy bill

Posted on Dec 14, 2011 by MG1

Wikipedia founder and current online pin-up Jimmy Wales has announced that he may well blank out every page on Wikipedia in response to the Stop Online Piracy Act bill that's set to take place in the US.
Wales has been against the idea of the bill since day one, believing that it will throw the web into disarray and many a website will be harmed by faulty claims of copyright infringement.
White out
The US senate, however, believes the bill is needed to make sure the country's rights holders are given a fair shout at stymieing online piracy.
Wales is planning to fight the bill by blanking out Wikipedia US in its entirety – a kind of self-censorhip sit-in.

Amazon to sell 6 million Kindle Fire tablets, 8 million eReaders in Q4

Posted on Dec 14, 2011 by MG1

Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a smash hit, with fourth-quarter sales that may exceed even the most lofty estimates reported ahead of the tablet’s recent launch. In just over six weeks of availability this quarter, analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate that Amazon will sell as many as 6 million Kindle Fire tablets. Add to that another 8 million Kindle-branded eBook readers the firm sees Amazon selling between October and the end of this year, and the retailer looks to be in store for a huge holiday quarter. ”While the Kindle Fire certainly doesn’t have the breadth of functionality of the iPad (no camera or microphone, shorter battery life and less memory), it does a few things very well, which just ha...

Sony brings Music Unlimited service to Walkman PMPs

Posted on Dec 14, 2011 by MG1

Sony's Music Unlimited subscription service was already available on a wide variety of products like its TVs and Blu-Ray players, and now it's available on its line of Walkman PMPs. Similar to Spotify and Rdio, Music Unlimited allows you to stream anything from Sony's library of 10 million tracks, with the requisite playlist creation and genre-specific music channels, but moving that music to your Walkman isn't the most straightforward process. First, users must install the "Music Unlimited Transfer" application and plug their Walkman into a Windows PC. After that, you can transfer playlists or channels you've created over to the Walkman, but note that Sony's application doesn't actually let...

Both projectors use the latest 3LCD display technology and can display both 2D and 3D resolution. “One of Christie’s advantages is its wide selection of 3LCD models in the 4000 lumens range and above,” notes Frank Anzures, senior product manager, Business Products. “Customers needing mid- to high-brightness ...

HP sells 7,850 refurbished TouchPads during eBay fire sale

HP sells 7,850 refurbished TouchPads during eBay fire sale

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsHPTouchPad

This weekend's eBay TouchPad sale saw 7,850 of the refurbished devices find buyers, which is all the stock HP had on hand. The 16GB eBay listing saw 2,316 sales, priced at $99, while the 32GB model sold 5,534 units at $149. All were sold in less than 25 minutes, making eBay and PayPal work much slower and return a number of errors and unsuccessful transactions.
The flat shipping fee of $19 was also universally panned in the comments by buyers and potential customers, especially since HP usually offers free shipping on refurbished PCs and TouchSmart all-in-ones. The sales were limited to just two units per bidder, though multiple listings meant keen buyers could buy more than just this limit.

This week it’s become apparent that Intel is fully prepared to start in on the generation following their up until now known Ivy Bridge architecture with 22 nanometer process, that being an amazingly tiny 14nm, in the lab now! Managing Director Intel Northern Europe Pat Bliemer spoke with Nordic Hardware on how Intel is “well in phase” with current roadmaps, this appearing to show Intel as still having the crown they claimed when they were the first semiconductor manufacturer to use 32 nanometer technology for mass production. Bliemer also confirmed that Intel would be ready by the ned of first quarter 2012 to roll out its 22 nanometer process with 3D transistors, aka Tri-gate transistors.

HTC Amaze 4G users report receiving OTA Wi-Fi calling update (confirmed!)

HTC Amaze 4G users report receiving OTA Wi-Fi calling update (confirmed!)

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

HTC has already confirmed that the Amaze 4G will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich in 2012, but an interim update may be hitting today that brings Wi-Fi calling to the T-Mobile-exclusive device. TmoNews reports that several readers received software build 1.43.531.3 this morning after manually checking for a software update, with a new preference for enabling Wi-Fi calling present in settings. It's not clear whether the feature is active yet, but T-Mobile commonly provides the functionality for its lineup of Android and Blackberry devices (the Amaze 4G was rumored to be receiving the feature earlier this year along with the Galaxy S II). There's no official word yet on the rollout of the update ...

The FBI Is Using Carrier IQ Information

The FBI Is Using Carrier IQ Information

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Well, I suppose this was inevitable: the FBI, via a Freedom of Information Act request denial, inadvertently admitted to involvement with Carrier IQ. And it won't say how.
The government transparency wranglers at MuckRock filed for a FOIA release on the FBI's use of Carrier IQ, and by saying no, they almost said it all:
The material you requested is located in an investigative file which is exempt from disclosure...

Xperia Play now has 200 games available to download, some are free for the holidays

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

When the Xperia Play smartphone / gaming console hybrid launched in March, there were 60 games available for download; eight months later, Sony Ericsson has reached 200 games optimized for the device. We're glad to see the company's stayed devoted to the product and platform, but the 200 number might be a bit misleading — it includes a number of standard Android games that have been only slightly adapted for Sony Ericsson's device, and the number of Xperia Play-exclusive games is still quite small, though it includes good games like FIFA 12 and Dead Space. The company's made some strides toward getting PlayStation games onto the device, but those strides have been few and far between.

Intel lowers Q4 revenue expectations as a result of Thailand flooding

Intel lowers Q4 revenue expectations as a result of Thailand flooding

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Intel

Intel announced this morning that the company is lowering revenue expectations for the fourth quarter to $13.7 billion. While its estimate was originally pegged at $14.7 billion, the chip maker cites hard drive shortages resulting from Thailand's flooding crisis as the direct cause of the reduced forecast. PC manufacturers are cutting microprocessor inventory and placing less orders in response to the dwindling HDD availability — a disappointing development in a quarter which otherwise is expected to see an uptick in PC sales.

European Xoom 3Gs receiving Android 3.2

Last month, European Wi-Fi Xooms received the latest version of Honeycomb, and now it's coming to its more mobile 3G-bearing sibling. The update includes a new apps scaling feature so that apps designed for the smaller screen display better on larger devices, along with support for SD card expansion. According to forum posts by a Motorola support representative, the update is rolling out now to Austria, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany (both retail and T-Mobile versions), Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK. Confusingly, the forum posts direct users towards the My Xoom support pages for more information, but nothing r...

50 Ultrabooks to Debut at CES 2012?

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

I have no doubt that there will be tons of gadgets of all sorts at CES 2012 this year. Among that gear will certainly be hoards of Android tablets. According to Toms Hardware there might be as many as 50 new Ultrabooks breaking cover at the show. Intel had predicted a huge market for the Ultrabook, but it hadn't made a big push.
It looks like CES 2012 might be the big kickoff party for the Ultrabook. There may be 50 new Ultrabooks to check out for the first time at the show. That number comes directly from CEA's Shawn DuBravac who said the CEA expects 30 to 50 Ultrabooks.

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

New iOS 5.1 beta seeded to developers

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

Last time we saw iOS 5.1 beta, it was pointing towards new Apple devices on the horizon and adding some new hooks into Siri for developers. iOS 5.1 beta 2 has been seeded to developers, and while it doesn't bring a lot new to the table, it does add a nice new feature for those of you who like to take lots of pictures.
The new feature in this version pertains to Photo Stream and one of the more annoying things with it. Photo Stream is part of iCloud and automatically keeps the last 1000 pictures you took. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any way to delete a single picture from your stream. Instead, you'd have to either kill the stream and start over, or leave the offending picture out for any...

Sony Tablet S goes 3G, the company ships a version with a SIM card slot

Posted on Dec 13, 2011 by MG1

The 3G version of the Sony Tablet S Android fondleslab is now shipping, and it is priced a hundred pounds sterling more than the Wi-Fi variant, likely to translate to $100 more in the US, if history of selling mobile gadgets across the Atlantic is any indication.
The tablet has a 9.4" display, and is powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, with 5MP rear and a front-facing camera both present. It also has the often overlooked infrared sensor, which is placed there to allow using the slate for a remote of Sony's TVs and Blu-ray players.
