Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy M Pro
Samsung Galaxy M Pro is finally available in the UK with theorder.co.uk selling it for 339.49 GBP, which is about $530 (kinda steep). The device that is a part of Sammy’s “magical” line-up seems made to push BlackBerry users toward the Android bandwagon, rocking both a physical keyboard beneath the touchscreen.
Aside from the mentioned keyboard, the Galaxy M Pro also comes with a 2.66-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera on the back, VGA front-facing camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show. Intel creates a new mobile division to take on ARM's processors
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel has been left totally missing out on the current mobile revolution, as its chips are more suited to the desktop and server power requirements, with battery consumption still way worse than comparable ARM-based silicon.
To take on ARM for smartphones and tablets will be a formidable task, considering that 2.5GHz multicore goodness with 28nm, and even 20nm, is in the works, and will probably be in phones and slates as soon as next year.
Still, Intel is developing its CloverTrail and Medfield mobile chipsets in the labs, and is now shifting organizational focus to the task of catching up with ARM as well. Chipzilla will form a new mobile and communications division, which will be tasked e...

Game console owners stream more video content than ever before
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game Consoles
New data from Nielsen suggests that console owners are using their Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii game consoles to stream video content more than ever before. “Streaming now represents a reported 14 percent of Xbox 360 time, 15 percent of PS3 time and 33 percent of Wii time,” Nielsen said Wednesday. The market research firm explained that the growth in time spent streaming was driven by services such as ESPN 3, Netflix, MLB Network and Hulu, but that time spent using consoles also increased overall. Console usage during the first half of 2011 jumped 7% from the same time period last year. Nielsen said gaming is the most popular activity on Xbox 360 (34% of usage), the PS3 is most used for DVD/Blu-ray...

Bill Gates won't return to Microsoft full-time ever: committed to charity
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Is it because people don’t like Steve Ballmer or because they love Bill Gates so much, that the rumor about Gates coming back at the CEO chair in Microsoft resurfaces with a surprising persistence? We don’t know, but what we do know is that Gates is not coming back. Ever. This time, the former Microsoft chief executive confirmed this himself in an interview for Australian Sydney Herald finally putting all rumors to dust.
Bill Gates said he was committed to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and that’s what he wants to do for the rest of his life. As to Microsoft, Gates confirmed he’s still active, but it’s “part-time Microsoft, full-time charity” and that’s how it’s going to stay.

Sony Ericsson teams up with Box, offers 50GB of cloud storage to users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson may be a few weeks late with its official announcement, but that doesn't detract from how nice of an offer it has for Xperia smartphone customers. Starting today, Xperia owners will get 50GB of free file storage from Box by simply logging into their Box account from their Sony Ericsson smartphone.
Box has partnered with other companies, including HP, RIM, and LG, to make the same offer to their users. The 50GB of cloud storage can be used to store documents, music files, video files, and more. Box says that the 50GB equates to about 50,000 documents, photos, and presentations. Users can access their Box account wherever they have an internet connection.

Microsoft Tag gains QR and NFC support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
2D barcodes may be everybody's favorite technology that nobody really uses, but Microsoft is suggesting a solution: avoid fragmentation by supporting all possible formats with Microsoft Tag. The company is adding both traditional QR codes and NFC communications to its system, which previously only used the proprietary Tag format. Vendors and brands can now create QR codes and NFC URLs with Microsoft's Tag Manager, while the company positions its updated mobile Tag app as the one barcode reader to rule them all. It is currently available for Windows Phone, iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices, amongst others — though, of course, to take advantage of NFC you'll need a phone equipped with the p...

'Other OS' class action lawsuit against Sony dismissed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPlayStation 3
When Sony removed the "Other OS" ability from the PlayStation 3 in March last year, some users put together a class action lawsuit based on their right to keep the features the console had when they bought it. That lawsuit has now been dismissed because the judge was not convinced that the angry gamers had a case. Although users were forced to choose between Other OS and the latest updates that allowed continued PlayStation Network access, Judge Seeborg said they never had a legal right to ongoing PSN service in the first place — giving up Other OS in order to keep PSN was a choice individual users made, not Sony. The judge isn't allowing the complaint to be amended either, so this looks lik...

Rara.com to bring music streaming 'to the masses'
Like UnlikeAnother day, another streaming service with a silly name – today sees the launch of Rara.com, a new web-based music package from the people behind Omnifone.
But this one's a bit different – rather than catering to the tech-savvy music experts that apparently use Spotify and its ilk, Rara hopes to reach the 80 per cent of web users it describes as "music listeners" and "tech laggards".
To this end, instead of a "spreadsheet layout" and "loads of lists", Rara's web interface is very image-orientated, with pre-collated playlists built by the company's editorial team at the fore – fronted by Imogen Heap, with more artists coming on board as "associate editors" over the coming months.
The company...

Google Voice calls within U.S. and Canada free for another year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google on Tuesday announced that calls placed within the United States and Canada using Google Voice will continue to be free through the end of 2012. “This is our way of helping you connect with friends and family across the country,” Group Product Manager Vincent Paquet wrote on a company blog. Google stated last year that calls made within the U.S. and Canada would be free through 2011, but the company is extending the promotion through 2012 for reasons unknown. Google Voice was born from Google’s acquisition of GrandCentral in 2007, and the later acquisition of Gizmo5 in 2009 is expected to eventually add VoIP capabilities to the service. For the time being, VoIP calling is only supporte...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsGoogleAndroid 4.0
While it’s not the first time we’ve seen the latest version of Android on a tablet, it’s fun to see Qualcomm loading Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.1 onto its Snapdragon S4 developer tablet.
This will be the ultimate tablet for developers to test their Android apps on, thanks to the impressive hardware specs and Qualcomm’s Liquid mobile development platform. The device packs just about anything you could want in a tablet, and therefore all the tools necessary for any type of app developers try to throw at it. It will of course feature Qualcomm’s new top-of-the-line Snapdragon S4 processors, which are not yet in any consumer products. The MSM8625 and MSM8225 are dual-core and can be clocked a...

Carrier IQ itemizes what exactly they're monitoring
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Carrier IQ has come under a lot of fire about how much data its monitoring service collects, and governments are concerned about whether there are any privacy violations occurring. Manufacturers like Apple and RIM have been quick to distance themselves from the company, while others like HTC and Samsung may be liable for their involvement with Carrier IQ.
In response to the backlash, Carrier IQ has released a 19-page document explaining what exactly their app does, and what it doesn’t do. Its primary goal is to inform wireless network operators of when, where, and how calls are dropping so those service providers can make appropriate adjustments. Heatmaps like the one above are generated to ...
