RIM: BlackBerry 10 smartphones won't arrive until end of 2012

Some unfortunate news was revealed for those BlackBerry addicts who've waited patiently for a QNX-based smartphone from RIM. The company's co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, reports that, due to a critical chipset that's not expected to be available in production quantity until mid-next year, we're unlikely to see a BlackBerry 10 device emerge until late in 2012. We know, ouch. When asked during today's conference call about the delay, the company leaders defended the decision and reiterated that a suitable alternative wouldn't be available that delivers a sufficient balance of processing power and battery longevity. As RIM's fans cope with the latest news, the firm promises that it's continuing to wor...

RIM reports Q3 2011 earnings: $5.2b revenue, $265m net income and 14.1 million handsets shipped

News out of Waterloo isn't all bad today, as Research in Motion has revealed its financial results for the third quarter of 2011. While the company previously had to scale back its earlier earnings projections of $5.6 billion in the quarter, it's apparent the firm came close to meeting that mark. After close of the markets today, RIM reported $5.2 billion in revenue with $265 million in net income and 14.1 million handsets shipped. The company was only able to eke out 150,000 PlayBook tablets during this time frame, however, which no doubt contributed to these reduced numbers. Unfortunately, the market hasn't taken so kindly to the revelation, as RIM's stock has fallen seven-percent in after...

Facebook Timeline now live for all users

Facebook Timeline now live for all users

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Facebook on Thursday activated its Timeline feature for all users of the social network. Facebook’s Timeline totally revamps a user’s profile page and lists events, such as check-ins, new friends, photos and more, in chronological order. We registered as a developer and have been using the Timeline feature for the past few months. We love that we’re able to go all the way back to 2004 when we first joined the social network to see early posts, but it’s a bit tedious to go through years and years of content to delete or hide posts that are no longer relevant. Facebook Timeline also allows each user to set a unique “Cover” photo that sits at the top of a user’s page and is independent of a pro...

Motorola Defy Mini lands at the FCC

Motorola Defy Mini lands at the FCC

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

While digging through the FCC' database this morning, we stumbled upon a yet-unannounced device from camp Motorola. Bearing the Defy Mini moniker and XT320 model name, the smartphone could be another rugged, yet smart offering, much similar to the Motorola DEFY+, but smaller in size.
The FCC filing for the Motorola Defy Mini does not reveal much, but it is rumored that the smartphone measures 109.0 by 58.5 by 12.6 millimeters and weighs 107 grams. It is also said that it has a HVGA touchscreen, 512MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, a 1390 mAh battery, GPS, and a microSD card slot. In terms of software, the Defy Mini is expected to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Sony Ericsson crowd-sourcing ICS preview ROMs

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

This is one of the coolest stories we've come across in a while. Sony Ericsson is really taking the update to Android 4.0 seriously by releasing alpha builds for certain phones and even asking for community help in the process.
Sony Ericsson has released alpha builds of Android 4.0 for the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S, and Xperia Neo V handsets. This is well ahead of the scheduled release of the updates, but SE has a really cool plan here. While these ROMs are not intended for casual users or daily use, SE is pushing for users to use the xda forums to talk about the builds and help SE to build the ROMs better, and more quickly. This is a great gesture of openness that we're hoping catches on wit...

Apple betting heavily on flash RAM

Apple betting heavily on flash RAM

Apple doesn’t make many acquisitions, so when they buy a company it’s worth taking a closer look to get a peek at where Apple is headed. Last week we reported that Apple bought Anobit, maker of a unique type of flash Ram.
For those of you who don’t keep up with the different types of RAM, flash RAM is able to act as permanent storage - think of it as a hard-drive without moving parts - because it stores information even when the device is powered down. DRAM, the type you buy in sticks to upgrade your PC with, can only store information when the device is actively powering the RAM. This makes DRAM very fast at getting information into and out of its temporary storage as the CPU needs it, but ...

BlackBerry Curve 9360 gets mobile hotspot thanks to leaked OS 7.1

BlackBerry Curve 9360 gets mobile hotspot thanks to leaked OS 7.1

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Following closely with recent leaks for the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810, the entry-level BlackBerry Curve 9360 now has a leaked operating system upgrade which will enable mobile hotspot functions.
BlackBerry users have been waiting for this function for a long time, and even now seems a little late to the party, what with BlackBerry 10 right around the corner. It would be entirely laughable if RIM managed to launch their new platform without mobile hotspot, but given how they’ve been slogging on bringing new PlayBook functions to market, I wouldn’t be remotely surprised if there were a few function gaps in RIM’s next-gen smartphones.

Klipsch Mode M40 noise cancelling headphones: Take to the skies in style

Klipsch Mode M40 noise cancelling headphones: Take to the skies in style

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Klipsch has introduced noise cancellation into its headphone range for the first time, with the super stylish Mode M40 cans. And, it has included an in-line microphone and volume controls for iPhone, iPod and iPad users.
The 'phones are made of the same durable material used in high-end eyewear and come with a cloth covered cable, more often seen on home hi-fi gear. The ear cups are made of leather, and the active noise cancellation system employed can run for up to 45 hours on a single battery.
Unlike some other headphones, such as the Beats by Dr Dre Studio, the Mode M40 also work, even when there is no power for the ANC, albeit with no cancellation effect. This is important for those on l...

Amazon HTML5 Kindle format may already be in graphic novels

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

Amazon may be beta testing its new Kindle e-book format with selected publishers. The new format, referred to by Amazon as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), provides support for HTML5-based content. The Digital Reader, which revealed the testing, also reports that a number of graphic novels may already be available in the format and readable by the new Kindle Fire.
Amazon has developed the KF8 e-book format to optimize the capabilities of the recently released Android tablet and other full mobile platforms. It's said to be especially suited to children’s picture books, comics and graphic novels, technical and engineering books, and cookbooks. The KF8 supports many but not all HTML5 features. MSI Intros the X79A-GD45 (8D) LGA2011 Motherboard Supporting 128 GB of RAM

Intel Launches DX79TO Motherboard For Frugal(ish) Sandy Bridge-E Adopters

Intel Launches DX79TO Motherboard For Frugal(ish) Sandy Bridge-E Adopters

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Want to make the jump to LGA2011 and Sandy Bridge-E but don’t quite need all the bells and whistles of the DX79SI? Intel might just have the alternative motherboard for you. The company’s new DX79TO mobo is basically a stripped-down version of its bigger DX79SI brother with fewer bells and whistles. The question is, are the enthusiast-type buyers who are already making the jump to Intel’s latest and greatest chips willing to dump features for a modest price discount?

DROID RAZR in white comes tomorrow – can you guess why?

DROID RAZR in white comes tomorrow – can you guess why?

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Though it may seem like an exercise in foolish re-reporting to speak on this white version of the DROID RAZR again when we announced it earlier this month, it’s availability for tomorrow (the 15th of December) should strike you hard enough to bring about a bit more buzz than this device otherwise would. Since the DROID RAZR was released in its original black/gray form last month (our full review able to be found here), another color for the casing of this device is essentially just a paint job on the same cool sharpness: but besides the OTHER device you’re more than likely aware is almost certainly coming to Verizon tomorrow, recognize this: the DROID XYBOARDs are being cross-promoted with t...

Sony sells out of PS Vita pre-orders in Japan in comeback

Sony sells out of PS Vita pre-orders in Japan in comeback

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Sony on Thursday said that it had sold out of the PlayStation Vita in Japanese pre-orders. Not due to go on sale until Saturday, the handheld game system triggered lines that saw its initial batch spoken for. It did have a significant amount of time to sell stock, having started pre-orders on October 15.
The run may be a sign of a return to health for Sony's mobile gaming prospects, both once the Vita launches fully in Japan and once it arrives in the US in mid-February. Sony had already been struggling for years to compete with the PSP against the Nintendo DS line but took an even deeper hit after iOS and later Android cut into gaming revenue as their much less expensive games, and much mor...

Qualcomm: Tegra 3 is a “single use product”

Qualcomm: Tegra 3 is a “single use product”

Posted on Dec 15, 2011 by MG1

Qualcomm is pushing to make its Snapdragon mobile chipset brand more visible in the consumer marketplace, dismissing the threat of NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 as a “single use product” and even temporarily rebranding the Qualcomm Stadium as the “Snapdragon Stadium” from this weekend. Speaking at a pre-CES briefing today, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President of Software Strategy Rob Chandhok suggested that, while Tegra 2 may have been found in many of the headline-grabbing tablets and phones over the past twelve months, “in the mobile space, I’m not sure that NVIDIA has any more brand awareness than we do.” The company is similarly unconcerned about the quadcore Tegra 3.
