Report: Acer and Lenovo to Launch Windows 8 Slates in 2012

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

CES Las Vegas is just around the corner, but, similar to years past, we already know some of the hot items that will be on show in Sin City. Last year, we saw numerous dual-core smartphones and more Android tablets than we care to remember. This year, we're expecting to see Ultrabooks, some quad-core phones and tablets and, hopefully, something Windows 8-related. Considering Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is giving the keynote address, we figure some Windows 8 action isn't completely out of the question, but will he talk about any of the rumored Windows 8 tablets?

Chip Industry Had Tough Nov '11; Expects Long Term Growth

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

Compared to last year, the sharp was even greater: The global chip industry sold semiconductors for $25.93 billion in November 2010. The good news is that, on a year to date basis, chip sales are 0.8 percent ahead of 2010."Supply chain disruptions resulting from the floods in Thailand have impacted semiconductor sales in the near term, however OEM's are expected to recover production losses over the course of the next few months," said Brian Toohey, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association. "November sales were additionally affected by the continuing European financial crisis which is having a broad impact on other economies and global demand."

Google buys 217 more patents from IBM

Google buys 217 more patents from IBM

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: GoogleIBM

Google apparently sees a lot of value in IBM's patent portfolio, and Big Blue is apparently happy to sell them off: Google just bought 217 patents from IBM, following its two purchases totaling over two thousand patents last summer. The sales are reflected in the US patent and trademark office database, but we don't know exactly how much money changed hands in this sale (or any of the bigger ones last year). Some of these patents cover mobile phones and other technology relevant to Google's defense of Android, but there's also dozens that don't appear to be directly related, including some patents on data caching, blade servers, and server load balancing. These things could have to do with A...

TiVo, AT&T patent settlement will send at least $215 million TiVo's way through 2018

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

After leveraging its DVR patent portfolio into a $500 million settlement with Dish Network and Echostar TiVo has made it rain again, cutting a mutual patent licensing deal with AT&T that settles their litigation and will result in at least $215 million heading its way through 2018. Additional license fees are possible based on AT&T's U-verse DVR subscriber base, so besides the $51 million up front and recurring payments after that, there could be even more money at stake.

The Wi-Fi Alliance's certification list may have spoiled a pair of Samsung's TVs for its CES intro next week. Both the "Echo-P Series TV" and the "X Series TV" received approval to use dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi. Either is light on detail and mentions just that they're "display devices" with media support.

Verizon CEO McAdam cancels CES panel appearance

Verizon CEO McAdam cancels CES panel appearance

It looks like the CES 2012 Innovation Power Panel will have to go on without Verizon's CEO, Lowell McAdam — the company just announced he will miss CES this year due to some scheduling conflicts. A Verizon spokesperson confirmed this to Reuters, saying that the company was looking in to sending another executive to the panel. We're willing to take Verizon's word at face value, though it is surprising to see him back out of an appearance at the industry's largest show — whatever's on his calendar now must be a big deal.

Well, well,Well, well, have a look at what the proverbial internet cat dragged in. The image above comes to you via Japanese forum, giving us a pretty good idea of what is allegedly Fujifilm's next interchangeable lens camera. Following in the footsteps of the retro-looking X10 and the X100, not much is known about the shooter's specs, but we'd venture that it probably isn't full-frame. Guess it won't take too long to find out, as the grapevine also muses its proper reveal will happen at CES. Too frothy to wait until then? Well, hop on past the break where we've conveniently culled an old mockup for ya.

Sony and Nintendo drop SOPA support amid Anonymous threats

Sony and Nintendo have dropped support for the controversial SOPA bill, backtracking on what has been accused as a pro-censorship push by legislators amid threats of internet attack from groups like Anonymous. Both companies are now absent from the official list of supporters [pdf link] of the Stop Online Piracy Act, along with games publisher Electronic Arts, though it’s unclear how much of the decision – by Sony Computer Entertainment, at least – was swayed by Anonymous’ threats to target first the PlayStation Network and then individual executives at the firm.

Google caught up in Chrome sponsored post controversy, blames it on marketing partner Unruly Media

Google's gotten some attention for its new marketing direction lately, but a series of sponsored blog posts and video placements for Chrome has some accusing the company of violating its own guidelines on paid advertising links. Search Engine Land and SEO Book discovered over 400 pages containing the phrase "this post is sponsored by Google," and at least one of the pages contained a marketing video for Chrome and a link back to the Chrome download page. The link didn't use the nofollow attribute that Google requires for paid links, meaning the search engine would index the link and improve Google's own page rank through a sponsored post.

Microsoft confirmed Tuesday that Internet Explorer 6′s share of the United States Web browser marker is now less than 1%. In celebration of the stat, first reported by Net Applications, the Redmond-based company is giving a final farewell to the browser. Internet Explorer 6 was first launched in 2001, shortly after Windows XP made its debut. It has since been replaced by new revisions, the most current of which is Internet Explorer 9. “IE6 has been the punch line of browser jokes for a while, and we’ve been as eager as anyone to see it go away,” Microsoft’s director of Internet Explorer marketing Roger Capriotti said in a blog post. “In fact, we launched the IE6 Countdown site last March to ...
