ViewSonic shows off 7" ViewPad E70

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Just in case you haven't had enough news recently about Android tablets, we've got another one for you. This time it's from ViewSonic and it's part of the budget category of devices. The ViewSonic ViewPad E70 is a 7" tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich, and due out in late Q1 of this year for just $180. Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. Sure, the tab is under $200, but for that you're getting an Ice Cream Sandwich tablet which still has capacitive buttons for some strange reason, and the innards are just as strange. The E70 has a 1 GHz CPU (no word on cores, but we're assuming single), and just 4 GB of storage. It will be capable of 1080p out through an HDMI port. Overall, if you...

Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system hands-on

Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system hands-on

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

As a relatively modest infotainment system, the Chevrolet MyLink does about exactly what you'd expect. The Windows-based system is easy to use and fairly responsive, and can sync with smartphones via USB and Bluetooth. Currently, the MyLink is set to integrate with two models of car: the Chevrolet Sonic in September and the Chevrolet Spark a bit earlier in June. Pricing is still being set, and we don't have much to go on beyond estimates of a "couple hundred dollars."

Buffalo launching 802.11ac router in the 2nd half of 2012

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

We'll be meeting with Buffalo later this week to get the details on its upcoming 802.11ac gear, but we just learned that it'll be launching its gigabit wireless router in the second half of 2012. The company expects to deliver 1300 Mbps speeds on this 5GHz wireless network, but it'll be backwards compatible with 802.11n as well. Range should be similar to other 5GHz devices, with the signal not expected to significantly penetrate the walls where it's in use. As for how the company expects this to be used, there's a major focus on home theater applications, from Netflix streaming to powering set-top boxes. Unfortunately, there wasn't any real hardware available for a hands-on — the image abov...

Basis B1 health band spotted on a wrist, shows off its web interface

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

The Basis Band health tracking wrist strap is still very much a prototype, but today the company unveiled the web dashboard where you'll monitor the results of the five sensors on board, and let us take a look at few of the prototype straps are floating around on the wrists of its employees at CES 2012. As you'll see in the images below, the array of sensors and capacitive touchpins makes for quite a fancy watch. Click on our source link to download a PDF with sample images from the interface, to see how it works.

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

It wasn't enough for ViewSonic to bring just one tablet to CES 2012, the company had two ten-inchers in tow as well, though, neither the 10pi or 10e sport the lust-worthy Ice Cream Sandwich. The 10pi is a dual-booting machine with an Oak Trail z670 pushing your choice of Gingerbread or Windows 7 to a 1280 x 800 IPS panel. The 10e is a 9.1mm-thin Android 2.3 device running on a 1GHz Cortex A8. Both the 10pi and 10e will be available later this month for $849 and $299, respectively. The company also announced that the ViewPhone 3 would be coming to Latin America, as expected, later this quarter for $279.

Remember that super crazy Olympus accounting scandal we told you about a couple of weeks back? Yeah, well, it just got super crazier. The camera maker is suing its own president, Shuichi Takayama and 18 other past and present executives over the dealie, in which it worked to conceal $1.7 billion in loses. The company filed in a Japanese court yesterday. On top of that, current board members have agreed to resign, moving aside for investors to vote on new management for the company.

Fulton Innovation powers phones in your handbag, shows off inductive charging support for tablets

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Fulton Innovation has a knack for coming out with the latest -- ahem -- innovations in the rapidly-expanding world of inductive charging, and this year the crew showed up at Pepcom Digital Experience to show off the company's progress in the world of wireless power. Today its offerings, most of which are still in the works and not ready for final production as of yet, include the ability to charge your handset through your handbag. In addition, it's the first company to find a way to utilize inductive charging through a metal surface; last but not least, Fulton was showing off the upcoming medium-power Qi standard, which is capable of powering up tablets. Check out the video and gallery belo...

Sensics Smart Goggles put your head in the game

Sensics Smart Goggles put your head in the game

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Pepcom's the perfect place to find things you might not hear about otherwise — like Sensics' Smart Goggles, which we got a chance to play with tonight. The Smart Goggles are basically an insanely heavy helmet containing a heads-up display that runs Android (Android 4.0, to be exact, though we're not sure if that really matters) — it's kind of like the virtual reality helmets many of us played with as a kid at science museums, with a few 21st-century upgrades. You can run regular Android apps inside the device, and pair it with a smartphone or wireless controller, but where the Smart Goggles really get fun is gaming. Sensics developed a test game for the Smart Goggles that turns you into a ro...

X-Reality Pro by Sony

X-Reality Pro by Sony

This has been consistent with recent technology – resolution from our smaller devices or even YouTube doesn’t render clearly when streamed over our larger televisions. Sony’s new televisions will incorporate their X-Reality Pro software into every one of their future Bravia televisions. It properly pixelates what your video or image should look like in real time.
It essentially restores the proper resolution for a low quality video to help make it look great on a TV with such a high pixel density. You may not gather it from the press shot above, but the television shown is making use of the X-Reality technology from a tiny YouTube video with low resolution.

Motorola wants to release fewer smartphones in the future

Motorola wants to release fewer smartphones in the future

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha revealed to reporters at CES 2012 today that the company wants to make fewer smartphones in the future so that it can better focus its marketing dollars. Jha also provided reasoning behind why Motorola (and presumably other manufacturers) insist on skinning their Android devices. Motorola's intention to release fewer devices in the future is almost laughable at first take, as this is the company that released the DROID BIONIC and DROID RAZR nearly on top of each other, and then just announced the new DROID RAZR MAXX this week. Jha rationalized the situation with the BIONIC, saying that unforeseen delays caused the device to launch much later than it should have. The p...

GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Remote Control Kit hands-on

GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac and Remote Control Kit hands-on

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Filed in: GoPro

We're certainly not going to say no to more functionality for GoPro's rugged camera units. Here at CES's Digital Experience, we've got to get a glimpse at both the WiFi BacPac and Remote Control Kit. The WiFi Bacpac does what you'd expect it to do -- but with an extra twist. Alongside WiFi connectivity, it'll also play nice with both Android and iOS devices. The apps will display any captured content immediately, with a free-to-download app that will connect with the camera.
The remote control kit, meanwhile, is capable of stringing together several different cams, with a largely dual-button setup that looks an awful lot like a heart-rate monitor. Check the hands-on after the break and expec...

T-Mobile just announced the expansion of the company’s 4G network and unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G. The device features a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor and will be the third smartphone to take advantage of the carrier’s 4G HSPA+ 42 network. The handset is expected to be available later this year, with additional details set to be revealed closer to its release. T-Mobile has doubled the speed of its 4G HSPA+ network in 12 additional markets, offering faster HSPA+ 42 to 184 million Americans in 175 total markets. Samsung to concentrate on profit rather than handset volume

Samsung to concentrate on profit rather than handset volume

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

At the CES in Las Vegas, Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung told Reuters that increasing profitability is the Korean manufacturer's new number one target. Just the day before, the executive said that Samsung plans on becoming the world's number one handset maker this year to break Nokia's 14 year reign on top. Gee-sung said that Samsung has topped Nokia in terms of revenue, will probably top the Finnish based firm in terms of volume shipped this year, but trails other companies when it comes to profits. "Our target should move on to this," Choi said. In the third quarter of last year, Samsung became the top smartphone manufacturer and is building on the success of its well-received Samsung Galaxy S I...

Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga convertible tablet runs Windows 8, is set to arrive later this year for 'around $1,000'

Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga convertible tablet runs Windows 8, is set to arrive later this year for 'around $1,000'

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

If CES is the place where companies can demo products they don't intend to sell for another six months, what better place for PC makers to tease their first Windows 8 tablets? Though the OS isn't expected to reach its final stage until later this year, Lenovo is already showing off the IdeaPad Yoga, a convertible tablet with a screen that flips over, like a cover on a spiral-bound book. If you like, you can bend it partway so that the keyboard functions as a stand when you're in the mood to watch a movie.
Based on our conversations with Lenovo reps, it's clear the company sees this as a laptop first, and tablet second. The proof is in the specs, really. It weighs "less than 1.5kg," or 3.3 po...
