Sprint LTE Google Galaxy Nexus gets 16GB storage, Google Wallet compatibility (updated)

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG3

Sprint has revealed more details about the Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone on a landing page highlighting its forth-coming 4G LTE network. According to the page, the Sprint version of the Galaxy Nexus will have 16GB of internal storage like the HSPA+ model (the LTE version for Verizon Wireless has 32GB), and it will support Google Wallet, unlike other versions of the Galaxy Nexus. Verizon caused quite a commotion when it said that the version of the Galaxy Nexus that it carries would not support Google Wallet, but it doesn't look like Sprint users will have to worry about that.

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: AT&T

Today at CES in Las Vegas, wireless carrier AT&T announced a new magazine-style application store, AppCenter, that will help get HTML5 and Android apps to smartphone users. AT&T hopes that this will increase HTML-5 applications and be easily linked to Google's Android Market for developers. Unlike other app stores, the AT&T AppCenter will drive users to existing app stores, like Android Market, so that developers don't have to worry about yet another application store that they have to place their applications on. The beta of the AT&T App Center launches in beta form today.

USB 3.0 headed to smartphones, tablets by end of 2012

USB 3.0 headed to smartphones, tablets by end of 2012

Filed in: Cell PhonesTablets

The USB Implementers Forum has announced that the high-speed USB 3.0 protocol will find its way to smartphones and tablets by the end of 2012. Already available for desktop and laptop computers, USB 3.0 will allow mobile devices to transfer data to and from a host computer at rates of up to 100MB per second. This is nearly fifteen times faster than what the current USB 2.0 technology offers. The new USB 3.0 ports will be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 computers and accessories. No manufacturers have committed to using USB 3.0 in mobile devices just yet, but the consortium says that it should be commercially available before the year is out.

Viewsonic goes cloudy, touchy and 3D with a trio of new displays

Viewsonic goes cloudy, touchy and 3D with a trio of new displays

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG3

New displays? ViewSonic's got 'em. Take, for example, the TD2220, an LED monitor that features two-point touch interaction, two USB ports, a two-watt speaker and a 360-degree swiveling screen. Then there's the TDi2340, a so-called "anchor for cloud computing devices," a display that connects wirelessly to tablets, smartphones and notebooks, serving as an extended desktop. The 23-incher features a touch interface and sports an ARM11 processor inside. The 27-inch V3D271 is an active 3D display with 1920 x 1080 resolution. It features dual two-watt speakers and ships with a pair of NVIDIA glasses for that whole three-dimensional thing. No word on pricing, but the three models should ship in Q2.

CES 2012 speaks out against SOPA

CES 2012 speaks out against SOPA

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

This week at the Qualcomm keynote event on the second full day of CES 2012, a big message has been sent to Washington direct from CES leaders: we do not want SOPA to pass. To do this, they’ve displayed a website by the name of Declaration of Innovation. To get to this site and join the “nerd army” as they say, head to DeclareInnovation.com and speak out against the majorly overly broad set of laws being passed as we speak to fight piracy but in actuality set to harm innovation on the whole.

Qualcomm's Quad-Core TV Processors Could Deliver Console Quality Gaming—Without the Console

Qualcomm's Quad-Core TV Processors Could Deliver Console Quality Gaming—Without the Console

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Filed in: TVs

Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors have been a hallmark of mobile devices for the past few years. Not content with keeping the party in your pockets, the Snapdragon is coming to your TV, to the tune of 1.5GHz quad-core processor mightiness.

In addition to those four-cores, the Snapdragon S4 MPQ8064 also has Adreno 320 graphics. So, basically we're talking about console-quality gaming, potentially, without the console. The S4 supports 1080p 3D and Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. The architecture is built to work with Android, which means we're likely to see these integrated with Google TV. We've seen a rash of Google TV products lately from LG, Sony, and most recently Vizio, and Android games have b...

Android 4.0 update hits Asus Transformer Prime

Android 4.0 update hits Asus Transformer Prime

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Asus has let the Android 4.0 update for the Asus Transformer Prime loose a couple of days early. The Ice Cream Sandwich software wasn't meant to hit the slate until 12 January, but Asus decided to bring it forward, announcing the new availability at its CES 2012 press conference. Asus was pretty keen to ram home the fact that this makes the Asus Transformer Prime the World's first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, so we wouldn't be surprised if it transpired that a competitor has the software ready to go too.

Asus Padfone to launch at Mobile World Congress 2012

Asus Padfone to launch at Mobile World Congress 2012

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

What's this? Mention of a tradeshow that isn't CES 2012 in the headline of a news story in early January? You read correctly, as the Asus PadFone is now set to be unveiled in February. As you know, February is the reserve of Mobile World Congress 2012 – although Asus did have to take to CES 2012 to confirm the announcement, as well as showing off the PadFone on its Vegas stand. Nothing much else new to report really; the 4.3-inch PadFone is still set to come with Ice Cream Sandwich and we still don't know for sure whether or not it'll come with the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor.

SanDisk announces world's fastest, most expensive 128GB SDXC Card

SanDisk announces world's fastest, most expensive 128GB SDXC Card

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

Filed in: SanDisk

SD card specs seem to change more often than the those of the cameras they go into. The king of the SDXC format this week is SanDisk with its just-released 64 and 128GB SDXC cards; the 128GB card is the world's fastest with 45MB/s read and write speeds. If you decide you need SanDisk's brand of ultra high-speed data transfer in your life, you can plan on paying $199.99 for the 64GB card or a whopping $399.99 for the 128GB version. It would seem unlikely that someone using SD would be speed-critical enough to drop this kind of money on a card, but SanDisk is marketing it to 3D video shooters, who have much larger file sizes to deal with. To the truly awesome SD card users out there — we salut...

MSI Z77 Motherboards and Next-Gen GUS Pictured

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

MSI showed off its upcoming socket LGA1155 motherboards based on Intel's Z77 chipset, designed to accommodate next-generation "Ivy Bridge" Core processors out of the box. Like many other motherboard manufacturers with similar motherboards on display, MSI's Z77 motherboards lack the final designs of their typically fancy-looking heatsinks over the chipset and VRM, and make do with basic ones that get the job done, and more importantly, let visitors take a look at the components in use more closely. MSI displayed two motherboards, the mid-range Z77A-GD65, and premium Z77A-GD80.
The Z77A-GD80 is designed for gaming PCs with up to two graphics cards, with a strong CPU VRM. The CPU is powered by...
