Google+ Users Hit 90 Million
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google said Thursday that its Google+ social network now has 90 million users, up from 40 million in October.
Engagement is also growing, Google CEO Larry Page said during a fourth-quarter earnings call. More than 60 percent of Google+ users engage with the service daily and 80 percent engage weekly, he said.
Google has shipped a new Google+ feature every day since the network's June debut, Page continued. This week, for example, the service added support for automatic video posts via Webcam, eliminating the need to upload the clip to YouTube, as well as the ability to start a Google+ conversation directly from search results.

ZTE reveals $20 to $30 cost of Windows Phone license
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftZTEWindows Phone 7
ZTE launched its Tania Windows Phone in the UK last night and provided some insight into the true costs of Windows Phone for manufacturers at the same time. ZTE executive Santiago Sierra, a portfolio manager for the company's UK arm, revealed to TrustedReviews that the firm pays between £15 and £20 ($23-$30) for a Windows Phone license from Microsoft.
The revelation is surprising to say the least. Other Windows Phone makers like HTC and Samsung are widely believed to pay around $10 to $15 per device. ZTE's figures appear to suggest that all is not fair in the Windows Phone licensing world, or that manufacturers are paying a lot more than previously expected. ZTE told us at the UK Tania launc...

Internet Victory as SOPA, PIPA Lose Steam
Like UnlikeThe SOPA and PIPA bills are withering away as Internet activism seems to have scored a victory. Several well-established corners of the Internet went dark Wednesday in protest of the anti-piracy bills facing the House of Representatives and Senate respectively. The bills would give content owners heavy-handed powers to shut down or block sites accused of copyright infringement without the benefit of legal discourse or due process. Even worse; the ability to block, shutdown or sue websites accused of piracy involves entertainment industry lawyers tinkering with domain registries, the very backbone of the Internet itself. In a nutshell: Politicians want to give lawyers the ability to tinker wi...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleMac OS X
The Daily Show and Colbert Report famously rely upon SnapStream's high-power Windows DVR software to monitor the insanity at the fringes of America's cable spectrum. The media-monitoring software is also used by news services, educators and shadowy government agencies to keep tabs on the subjects discussed on TV. The latest edition (version five) opens the platform up to OS X users, enabling them to run it in Firefox without messy virtualization. The OS X web player comes with a plugin to watch MPEG-2 streams that'll happily sit on top of Snow Leopard or Lion and will even let you set up customized alerts for whenever inappropriate euphemisms emerge from Oprah's mouth.
