Megaupload user data purge could begin Thursday [updated]
Like UnlikeThird-party companies that stored Megaupload’s data may delete all user files on Thursday. Megaupload customers, even those not guilty of piracy or using the service illegally, have been unable to access their files since the website was shut down on January 19th. So far, seven men have been charged for illegally allowing Megaupload users to store and share music, movies and other copyrighted content, among other things. The issue, however, is that millions of Megaupload users used the service legally to store family photos and other personal data. Megaupload doesn’t store the data itself, the AP said Monday, instead it hired Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group to store its dat...

Koush shows off touch-enabled ClockworkMod Recovery
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
We've been wondering when this would come to pass, because we've been getting pretty tired of navigating recovery menus with the volume buttons and power button on an Android device. CyanogenMod developer extraordinaire, Koush, is showing off the next version of the ClockworkMod Recovery and it looks pretty cool.
For the first time, it looks like we're going to get a fully touch-enabled ClockworkMod Recovery. So far, it's a pretty early build, although tapping and swiping through menus is working. Koush is promising to update the UI of the Recovery before it is released into the wild. Right now, it looks much like the ClockworkMod Recovery that we all know, but the menu items have been spac...

Radio Shack shares slide on Q4 profit warning, Sprint gets the blame
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Blaming disappointing results from Sprint's post-paid business, Radio Shack announced after the closing bell on Wall Street, that it will report much lower than expected Q4 earnings. The retailer said that it had fewer new activations and upgrade activations due to policy changes at the carrier. Revenue from Sprint's post-paid customers declined both year-over-year and sequentially. Radio Shack now expects fourth quarter revenue of $1.39 billion, ahead of the Street's 1.35 billion estimate. But earnings per share will come in at 11-13 cents, much lower than the Street's prediction of 37 cents a share.
Same store sales were up 2%, but gross margin in the period should come in at 35%, down fro...

Verizon to begin training employees about family share data plans
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon is looking to change its family share data plans for 2012, according to a leaked document. We’ve heard about this before and we hope it’s true.
In the new document, Big Red is said to be leaving training material for an update that shows a new section labeled “account level data plans.” The largest wireless provider in the United States is working on a change in the shared account that’ll charge for data allowance and a 9.99 charge per line.
This leak suggest that there may be a new family data plan coming down the pipeline, and if this turns out to be true it will put some pressure on its biggest competitor AT&T. Ma Bell remains mum on its own data sharing plan.

Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftNOKIA
Microsoft and Nokia ran a contest at the beginning of this year, offering a total of 500 Nokia Lumia 800′s for submitting a Mango app to the Marketplace. The first 500 developers to publish a Mango-enabled app which met the Metro design criteria and used fast app switching were the lucky winners of this contest.
Apparently the handsets are now being distributed to qualifying developers, with this email below going out to some:

It is the end of January and this time every year, carriers' thoughts start turning to making room on the shelves for the new batch of handsets that are coming. With MWC less than a month away, and a new batch of the most-up-to date models about to be displayed, TmoNews has obtained a leaked screenshot of an internal T-Mobile document. The document shows some devices on Controlled Distribution with no plans to replenish depleted inventories of these phones. The half-dozen Android models include three models manufactured by HTC which might actually get a little more time considering that the carrier continues to advertise some of them. The remaining three LG models are ones that not too many ...

Proposed congressional bill targets Carrier IQ and other mobile tracking software
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Democratic Representative Edward Markey of Massachusetts released a draft of his cell phone privacy bill on Monday. The Mobile Device Privacy Act is designed to protect consumers from tracking software such as Carrier IQ, which caused an uproar late last year when it was discovered to be secretly monitoring 150 million smartphone users. The bill would require companies to disclose the use of such tracking software and clarify exactly what information the software collects. Customers would have to consent to any data collected or transmitted, and third parties would have to file applications with the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission to ensure the data is bein...

During the chaotic busyness of CES, we managed to get a quick look at Sprint’s upcoming Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device – the indomitable Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Just like its close Verizon sibling, we know that Sprint’s model will also be packing support for 4G LTE, however, we were left in the dark about its impending availability.
Although we’re not hearing about an actual release date just yet, it’s seemingly close considering that Sprint recently blessed the Android flagship with its very own landing and registration page. Xbox 720 will not launch this year, Microsoft exec says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX One
Microsoft will reportedly not launch the highly anticipated follow-up to the Xbox 360 this year. Cedrick Delma, Microsoft’s marketing director in France, recently told Le Point that he was “certain” the Redmond-based company would not release a new Xbox this year. Gamers shouldn’t give up all hope on at least getting a glimpse at Microsoft’s next-generation console this year, though. BGR exclusively reported last June that Microsoft has plans to unveil its Xbox 360 successor during this year’s E3 gaming show in Los Angeles. A few Microsoft patents recently suggested that the “Xbox 720″ might double as a set-top box complete with DVR functionality, and a rumor last week also suggested that th...

MetroPCS discontinues low-end $40 LTE unlimited plan
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
MetroPCS dropped what was once an unlimited plan of pretty good value. The $40 plan previously offered included unlimited talk, text, and Web for 4G LTE smartphone owners. MetroPCS isn’t replacing it with another low-end option for 4G customers but instead is pushing them toward the $50 and $60 options.
The $40 per month option has been nonexistent for a while, however. A spokesperson for MetroPCS confirmed with FierceWireless that the carrier stopped offering the plan late last year, specifically when it stopped selling the Samsung Craft. The Samsung Craft was the world’s first LTE handset, but it was an entry-level device with poor specs and not much to offer. Now that MetroPCS sells Andro...

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to Bell, Rogers and Telus in February
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Note
Those of you who seem to be more closely connected to the Maple Leaf than the pine needle might've jumped on the envious side at the news that folks across the border are getting their hands on the LTE Galaxy Note. Envy no more. Via blog post, Rogers has announced that Samsung's "phablet" creation will be surfing through its fresh 4G waves in the upcoming month. Aside from the Rogers branding we expect to see, it'll be hard to distinguish this Note from its AT&T brother, as it'll be identical in the specs department. Based on a page thrown up at Best Buy Canada, it looks as if it'll sell for $249.99 on a three-year contract (with Bell and Telus getting in on the fun, too), with the first of ...
