HTC forced back into court over IPCom patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
An appeals court in Washington has ruled that the patent case brought against HTC by IPCom that was tossed out of court back in 2010 should be given another chance in front of the judge, forcing the companies to return to the courtroom to restate their arguments. The original court decision from 2010 deemed the patent that IPCom was using in its complaint was invalid, but the appeals court now claims that was an incorrect verdict. HTC and IPCom have sued each other in the U.S., the UK, and Germany over the use of the patent, which relates to how a phone finds cellular coverage while moving.

Study says that apps are not important to smartphone owners
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
There are those who will tell you that the Palm Pre failed because it was launched without a fully stocked online app store. Some will tell you that they will not buy a Windows Phone model because of the smaller Windows Marketplace. BlackBerry App World has been compared by some to a KMart toy department after Xmas with nothing but empty shelves. But are apps that important to smartphone users? A new study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project suggests that apps are not so important after all.
According to the study, 68% of smartphone users open 5 or fewer apps at least once a week. Amazingly, 42% of those responding to the survey have not installed one app on their p...

The rumour-mill is awash with Samsung Galaxy S III murmurs, following a couple of reports suggesting that the future flagship smartphone from the Korean company was facing a delay.
The Galaxy S III grapevine seemed to suggest that the next big Sammy Android instalment would be getting a February unveiling at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not so, says The Verge though who cite our old pals "people familiar with the matter" as saying that Samsung had originally planned to announce the handset at MWC but has now decided to delay the news.

Harvard wants the next Zuckerberg to stay at Harvard
Like UnlikeHarvard University has teamed up with an organization called the New Enterprise Associates to create an initiative that hopes to keep great innovators in college before they run out and make millions. This, of course, is exactly what happened with Mark Zuckerberg and fellow software architect Bill Gates. The problem is all the good schools are in New England but all the dough is out on the West Coast. But no more, perhaps.

Nokia Belle update ready for download on February 8th?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIA
Even in the midst of a big push to bring its Windows Phone 7 devices to the USA, Nokia hasn't forgotten its Symbian roots. It seems that "Belle," the company's update to Symbian Anna, will be available from February 8th, which is in line with its previous estimate of February. The news came this weekend via Nokia's Vietnamese website, although the page has since been taken offline. The update is apparently unsuitable for OTA download due to its large size, and so will be available through Nokia Suite on the PC, to be pushed to devices via USB.
Nokia has also revealed via Twitter that the N8, C7, and other devices are now shipping with Belle preinstalled in some regions. The new software will...

IBM creates 9nm carbon nanotube transistor
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
IBM has created 9nm transistors from carbon nanotubes, the same versatile material that the world's lightest material is constructed from and can also camouflage objects. In contrast, silicon has a theoretical limit of 10nm, and while transistor architectures are currently pushing 22nm, a presentation in July showed Intel could have 10nm chips ready by 2015 (PDF). Smaller architectures not only lead to smaller chips, but also lower power usage — something that the researchers say the carbon transistor delivered even better than expected.

Asus working on prototype Kinect-equipped Windows 8 laptops?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftASUSWindows 8
We know Microsoft will launch Kinect for Windows hardware next month, but a new report claims that the software giant could be working with Asus to build that support directly into laptops. The Daily says it has "checked out" a pair of official prototype Asus laptops that include a Kinect sensor built-in. The sensor, running on a Windows 8 laptop, reportedly stretches across the top of the screen, and includes a set of LEDs at the bottom of the display.
Asus released its own WAVI Xtion hardware last year, based on the same PrimeSense technology used in Kinect, so it's clear the company has experience with motion-controlled devices. Microsoft has not officially detailed its support for Kinect...
