Apple applies for 'security magnet' patent to unlock future devices

Apple applies for 'security magnet' patent to unlock future devices

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

A patent filed by Apple late last week regarding the potential use of coded magnets to secure and grant access to a device or data set could eventually show up in a consumer product at some point. The process sounds similar to existing external hard drive enclosures that use RFID and sensor keys to grant access to a drive, although likely much more secure.
In the past, magnets have been used for security purposes but rarely to grant access to applications or data. For example, a bank vault may implement magnets as a physical locking mechanism built into the door. In the patent that Apple has applied for, the magnets would serve as a key code of sorts to grant access to a device like an iPad ...

Clearwire unveils $99 Clear Hub Express and $129 Clear Spot Voyager hotspots

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Clearwire's impending LTE rollout isn't going to happen overnight, so why not continue to milk the proverbial cow that is their existing WiMax network? That's exactly what the wireless provider is doing today, with a fresh duo of hotspots. The first, the Clear Hub Express, is a $99 WiFi router-mobile hotspot combo which is destined for home or office duty. The second is the Clear Spot Voyager, which for $124 will hawk WiMax to eight devices for up to six hours of continuous use off its internal rechargeable battery. Those are identical specs to last year's model, the Clear Spot 4G Apollo, albeit sans-screen and in a thinner package. They're available today from Clearwire, and either can be k...

Rupert Murdoch's surprising Twitter success

Rupert Murdoch's surprising Twitter success

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch isn't particularly computer-savvy, but his forays into Twitter have so far managed to capture the candid, combative outbursts that characterize good microblogging. On his account, he's done everything from accusing Obama of colluding with "Silicon Valley paymasters" on SOPA to admitting that MySpace "screwed up in every way possible." And despite his often deeply unpopular opinions, Murdoch's Twitter feed has arguably done more for his image than the bland accounts of many other executives. David Carr of The New York Times agrees, saying that "by mixing the personal and political, propaganda and plain old rants, [Murdoch] is serving his interests and the interests...

February 17th is again believed to bring forth the arrival of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0.0.7473

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

It’s not the first time we’ve heard a February 17th release date attached to the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 software, but yet again, the date is mentioned in the latest rumor that surrounds the highly anticipated software.
Well, we’ve heard various dates in February for the update’s release, though, the date of February 17th seems to keep on coming up more than anything else. Back at CES, we were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at the upcoming software, but the PlayBook that we saw running the new software had versions 2.0.07116. However, it was reported that RIM was already testing newer versions back at the labs behind closed doors. Therefore, it’s very likely we’ll be seeing a ...

Qualcomm's MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 benchmarks pop up online

Qualcomm's MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 benchmarks pop up online

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

We put Qualcomm's S4 development platform through its paces (twice, no less) at CES, but shorn of the glitz of Las Vegas, does it have the oomph to wow us? Someone at the company loosed Nenamark 2 on the slate, producing a score of 54.90. Given the fact that its producing graphics for a 1024 x 600 screen, we're excited to see it comfortably edge the Galaxy S II Skyrocket (54.1) and Galaxy Note (32.8) -- with our mouths watering at the thought of what this 28nm CPU can do in a smartphone. We've included the benchmark in full after the break, if you're ready for such exciting revelations.

Here's how to root your Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet (hint: it's super simple)

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

The Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet is probably the most affordable 7-inch tablet offering you a decent amount of space, extendible via a microSD card, but that card slot there also opens up another possibility. Turns out, rooting the Nook Tablet is done easiest via a microSD card.
So how do you do it? All you need is a microSD card of 2GB or more, a computer running on Windows, and the Nook Tablet with its software version being 1.4.1 or earlier. There are also separate instructions for Mac and Linux.

North Carolina launches FCC-approved TV White Space network in Wilmington

North Carolina launches FCC-approved TV White Space network in Wilmington

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Back in December, the FCC approved the first white space device and database for the lucky city of Wilmington, North Carolina. Last week, the program bore its first fruits, when database operator Spectrum Bridge finally launched its TV White Space (TVWS) network in Carolina, as part of Wilmington's ongoing "Smart City" initiative. With the TVWS network up and running, Wilmingtonians will have internet access in public parks, while authorities will be able to use part of Spectrum Bridge's broadband for video surveillance. Public security, in fact, is among the primary functions of the new network, which will be expanded to help manage traffic congestion and to help the city function more effi...

Barnes & Noble's next Nook said to launch this spring

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble’s fifth-generation “e-reading device” will reportedly launch this coming spring. Mentioned in passing within a New York Times profile of the struggling bookseller, it is unclear if the device in question will be a new media tablet or a standard eReader. With Barnes & Noble’s current-generation color tablet having just been announced this past November, however, a refresh of the company’s E Ink-equipped Nook Touch in the spring seems more likely. Barnes & Noble first unveiled the Nook Touch — then referred to as the “all-new Nook” — at a press conference in New York last spring. The device has since been upgraded with an improved display and a battery that lasts up to two month...

T-Mobile UK introduces The Full Monty plan with unlimited everything

T-Mobile UK introduces The Full Monty plan with unlimited everything

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

T-Mobile's UK arm announced a new plan for subscribers today that is said to be the first plan to offer truly unlimited services in the UK. The U.S. carriers have been peddling unlimited plans for a number of years now, but unlimited options have not been available in the UK until now.
Called the very British-appropriate Full Monty Plan, T-Mobile's new offering includes unlimited calling, text messaging, and internet use without any "fair use" restrictions. There are four tiers for customers to chose from, starting at 36GBP per month and going on up to 61GBP per month (the lowest tier offers unlimited in-network calling, but out of network calling is capped at 2,000 minutes). The higher tier...

Yahoo! recently announced that it would discontinue support and development for a number of mobile apps available for the iOS, Android, and BlackBerry platforms. The search company notes that while it is leaving these apps behind for greener pastures, it still has a suite of other apps available for mobile devices, and that it will continue to develop new apps for mobile users.

With Steve Jobs' wife in the audience, Obama urges us to find the next one, asks all offshore accounts home

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

At his State of the Union address yesterday, President Obama urged us to overhaul the culture in this country towards one fostering talent and innovation in search for "the next Steve Jobs", partly by addressing the current lack of qualified engineers and scientists at times when unemployment is soaring.
Steve Jobs' widow, Laurene, was sitting in the audience, when Obama also asked companies to bring back either the cash hoard they have accumulated in offshore accounts (nudge, wink, Apple, Google and the rest), try to bring jobs here, or both. For his part, the President promised to help create the environment to do so, starting with tax breaks for bringing back home cash or jobs.

T-Mobile to tighten the purse strings, limit data roaming starting April 5th

T-Mobile to tighten the purse strings, limit data roaming starting April 5th

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: T-Mobile

We've just come across an internal T-Mobile memo that will certainly give a few customers a moment of pause: come April 5th, it seems the carrier will impose new, restrictive limits that affect data usage when roaming. Hot on the heels of the network's roaming pact with AT&T, the change would restrict subscribers to a fixed allotment of roaming data that's proportionate to their current data plan. While most customers are unlikely to notice the change, it's almost certain that some will be left out in the cold. Once the roaming limit is met, users will be unable to consume any additional data on non-Magenta networks until the start of a new billing cycle. T-Mobile suggests the move is in eff...
