Microsoft has Android device makers by the short and curlies when it comes patent fees. Virtually all manufacturers who are creating Android smartphones and tablets license patents from Microsoft. It seems like Microsoft is set to get a taste of its own medicine from Motorola. Apparently, a German court appears set to side with Motorola in a patent dispute that has to do with patents used for video compression and decompression technology. Microsoft is allegedly using patented tech in some of its most important and popular products.

Nokia today announced that it is making changes to its production facilities located in Komarom, Hungary; Reynosa, Mexico; and Salo, Finland. Nokia has used these plants to manufacture smartphones, but will now push its manufacturing from these facilities to its Asian factories, which are closer to its component suppliers. The three facilities will remain open, but will focus on smartphone product customization, serving customers mainly in Europe and the Americas. Apple Wants Europe to Set Essential Patent Licensing Terms

Posted on Feb 08, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Apple

Apple has requested that the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) set guidelines that determine how companies license patents that are considered "essential" for certain products, including smartphones. The request, which was submitted in November, notes that patents are not licensed in a consistent manner. "It is apparent that our industry suffers from a lack of consistent adherence to FRAND principles in the cellular standards arena," said Apple in a letter to ETSI. Apple wants the European body to devise a way for technology companies to set appropriate rates for essential patents used industry wide. Apple also believes that FRAND-based patents should not be used to enfo...

One could argue that you don’t need a personal computer to function in today’s world. You can do pretty much everything anyone would ever want to do on the internet with just a mobile phone. That was Nokia’s message back in 2007 when they launched the N95 and told people to refer to it as a “multimedia computer” instead of a smartphone. Now back in 2007 that message was a little hard to swallow, even with the release of the iPhone during the summer. Technology being what it is though, things have progressed exponentially over the past five years. One look at the 5.3 inch Samsung Galaxy Note is all you need to see that! The folks at StatCounter have been keeping track of the rise of mobile de...
