Google begins building out 1Gbps Internet to two U.S. cities
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
As promised, Google is beginning to build out Google Fiber in two cities: Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. When completed, the new city-wide networks will tether citizens to a fiber-optic backbone capable of delivering 1Gbps Internet to tens of thousands -- if not hundreds of thousands -- of people.
Google says it has measured utility poles, studied maps, surveyed neighborhoods and eaten way too much barbecue -- but the company has since completed its planning phase and is now stringing thousands of miles of fiber-optic cabling along telephone poles.
There is no word how much a Google Fiber subscription will run, but the company claims it will be offered at a "competitive price...

"Reaching today’s milestone puts us ahead of schedule as we help propel the UK up the global broadband rankings. Broadband is coming of age as more people give up on slow DSL in favor of superfast fiber-optic speeds," said Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media.

The Siri technology is an integral feature of the iPhone 4S firmware, and aside from direct voice commands, allows asking plain-language questions about various facts and figures. A Wolfram Alpha widget primarily answers questions related to math and numerical facts, such as the distance to the moon.
The Times mentions that Wolfram Alpha staff now number about 200 The site first launched in May 2009, and was initially aimed purely at math and science, but can now handle more general requests such as movie showtimes. On Wednesday the company is launching a new version, Alpha Pro, capabl...

Apple's Vice President of iPhone and iPod engineering leaves

His last title at Apple before resigning was “Vice President of iPhone and iPod engineering”, he has over 70 patents in his name, and he spent over a decade at what is now considered the world’s biggest smartphone vendor. Now people leave companies for various reasons, so we don’t want to suggest that he got bored of Apple or didn’t agree with the where the company was going with the iPhone, but unless this guy wanted a vacation … why would you leave Apple when the company is as hot as it is today? The folks at 9to5Mac did some investigating to figure out where David now works, and while they didn...

Siri now serves 25% of Wolfram Alpha's traffic, could it threaten Google?
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleGoogle
The Apple effect is well known in Asian countries where massive amounts of workers and factories could get hired virtually overnight to fulfil an order, but now almost the same effect has hit Wolfram Alpha. The knowledge engine that offers not simply search results, but aims to put them into context, now has 25% of its traffic coming from Siri queries.
Apple’s humble intelligent voice assistants is smart partly exactly because of Wolfram Alpha that will do funky things like calculate the distance to the moon as well as solve and graph mathematical problems.
“Siri accounts for about a quarter of the queries fielded by Wolfram Alpha, whose staff has grown to 200,” a New York Times report said.

First impressions of Chrome Beta for Android - Looks to be worth the wait
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
We’ve been tinkering around with the new Chrome Beta for a couple of hours now and we’re definitely impressed to see that Google has provided a slick browser that’s also easy on the eyes. Even in beta form, we can imagine that most people who try Chrome for Android will probably stick with it. We’re glad that Google realized that functionality can look good.
The introduction of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was the first time we saw Google really hone in on the user experience for its mobile operating system and it’s taken that focus to Chrome. The browser is snappy, simple, and rather beautiful, given that it’s just a portal for viewing web content. If you use Chrome on your desktop, the b...

LightSquared gets desperate, seeks regulatory changes to satisfy GPS debacle
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesGPS
If we were the betting type -- and hell, some of us really are -- we'd wager a crisp ten spot that LightSquared isn't going to assuage the FCC's concerns over those pesky GPS interference issues in the next few weeks. After previously stating that the interference test reports were rigged by GPS insiders, the upstart LTE network is now getting political with its argument and is calling on the FCC to institute new standards for GPS equipment. LightSquared contends that current GPS devices on the market are poorly designed and purposefully encroach on the company's licensed spectrum. Of course, this change would do little to remedy the millions of interference prone / (causing?) devices on the...

With Valentine's Day coming next Tuesday, you want to get your significant other a brand new Motorola DROID RAZR. It seems that Verizon is running a Twitter contest for Valentine's Day and the prize is a colored Motorola DROID RAZR! All you need to do is to tweet the most creative confession (not the letter you sent to Penthouse Forum) to hashtag #TweetHeart sometime on February 13th and 14th
You can send poems, pictures or write about whatever romantic moment you feel the need to confess to. And there is nothing wrong in keeping your ey...

CyanogenMod team releases another CM9 progress report
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Long-time users of CyanogenMod are used to seeing a new version released shortly after the code is deposited to AOSP. That usually places CM users on the latest version of Android weeks, if not months, ahead of all non-Nexus Android phones. This time has turned out to be a bit different, and the CM team posted an explanation on their website today.
The biggest factor seems to be the huge jump in the code base between Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). The CM team indicates that they more or less started from scratch with the ICS build of CyanogenMod (CM9), and have been porting their CM7 customized tools to the ICS code.
While this process takes longer, it’s also...

Samsung used low cost chip for Samsung GALAXY Nexus
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
A breakdown of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus by ABI Research revealed that the Korean based manufacturer used a low cost LTE chip in Verizon's variant of the phone. The newer chip offers the same high-data performance as the older one, but at half the $23 cost according to ABI Research. It is smart purchasing like this that has enabled a company like Pantech to offer an LTE enabled phone like the Pantech Burst, for under $50 with a signed 2-year contract. And by making phones that support LTE cheaper, it helps spread the use of the technology globally.
ABI Research says that the Samsung GALAXY Nexus modem is constructed with the combination of a Via Telecom CDMA/EVDO Rev. A integrated circuit an...
