SanDisk claims smallest ever 128-gigabit flash chip
Like UnlikeFiled in: SanDisk
SanDisk's NAND flash lineup may have set a record Wednesday after the company claimed to have the world's smallest 128-gigabit (16GB) memory chip. The 19 nanometer, three-bit-per-cell storage has a footprint of about 170mm square (0.26in square), or less than that of a penny. It's also relatively quick for its capacity and size at 144Mbps (18MB) per second.
Chips built on the newer storage were considered ideal for smartphones, tablets, and solid-state drives for computers. Many such chips can be stacked on top of each other or side-by-side and give more reasonable capacities without having a physically larger device than they do now.

Sony PlayStation Vita Launches With New PS Store Apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesSonyPSVITA
While the Sony PlayStation Vita had a soft launch last week with the limited, First Edition bundle ($350 for a 3G Vita, a carrying case, and a 4GB memory card), Sony's new gaming handheld officially launches today, and with that launch comes new additions to the device's digital download platform, the PS Store.
The Editors' Choice PlayStation Vita, so favored because of its excellent gaming abilities in spite of significant media playback issues, is now available from most retailers, with preorders (or, for the earlier adopters, major import markups and fees) unnecessary. The $250 Wi-Fi-only Vita is also on sale for the first time in the United States, along with the $300 non-bundle 3G/Wi-Fi...

Piracy Agreement ACTA faces EU’s highest court
Like UnlikeThis week the act known as the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has been pushed before the European Union’s highest court where it will face scrutiny by law. This move has been described by EU trade head Karel De Gucht as a question by the court that will clarify whether the treaty was able to comply with “the EU’s fundamental rights and freedoms.” What we know so far of the ACTA, for those of you following along, is that its a multi-nation agreement currently being signed (or protested against) after its initial negotiation excluded civil society groups, developing countries, and the general public on the whole.

Android powered Google AR glasses to land this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
According to a report by the New York Times tech section Bits, we could be seeing the much-speculated Android-powered Google AR glasses landing before 2012 is up.
We first got wind of the project at the end of last year when 9to5Google ran a story claiming it was an open secret that Google was working on wearable technology in its secret Google X lair, and that the search giant was "in late prototype stages of wearable glasses" that "provide a display with a heads up computer interface".
The Google-centric blog then followed this up this month with claims that the HUD glasses "have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps" and "will also take p...

On/off switch for contactless credit cards eliminates virtual pickpocketing
Like UnlikeA new breed of credit cards featuring contactless payments using RFID or NFC technology is just around the corner but some are already concerned about how easy it might be for thieves to intercept a transmission or initiate their own while the card owner is none the wiser. Researchers at the Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering have developed a very simple solution that aims to eradicate this risk before it ever happens.
The idea of a contactless payment system is appealing for a few different reasons. Users are less likely to have their card information stolen when submitting the plastic for payment, say at a restaurant, where the card typically leaves the table for a few minutes. Also ...

Anonymous reveals Cybersecurity Act of 2012
Like UnlikeThis week it appears that the NSA has brought forth warnings of the hacker group Anonymous’ ability to take down the power grid at a most opportune time, according to none other than Anonymous. While earlier this week it was warned by the NSA that Anonymous might be targeting the US power grid, the hacker group has noted that they’d do no such thing, as “there are ppl on life support/other vital services that rely on it.” In addition, the group has brought attention today to a new bill that’s looking to get passed in the first part of the year: the Cybersecurity Act of 2012.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersAppleTV
This week it appears more likely than ever that Apple will be refreshing its line of Apple TV units as stock has grown low not only here in the USA, but at international retailers as well. Join us in searching for the last Apple TV units around the country as it appears that retailers such as Target, Best Buy, and Fry’s Electronics all have the device listed as completely out of stock and the rumors of a new unit begin to fly.

Video Captchas are (kinda) easier to defeat than other types
Like UnlikeThe Stanford team that developed "deCaptcha" to bypass audio and text versions of NuCaptcha's anti-bot scheme has cracked the video prompts too. In detailed article, security expert Elie Bursztein explains how he and his colleagues defeat video Captchas with a >90% success rate using deCaptcha with other software.
Unlike standard Captchas, video Captchas move -- naturally. That animation is supposed to stump bots as they don't know what shifting pixels to process. However, with a little ingenuity, focusing on the relevant text becomes trivial and in some ways, video Captchas are easier to circumvent than static text images, says Bursztein.

Adobe and Google to bring Flash Player to Linux
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Adobe has announced that it, and Google will be partnering to bring Adobe Flash Player to Linux users. The move has been talked about in the recently released roadmap from Adobe for Flash runtimes. The duo plan to work closely together on the development of a single modern API for hosting plug-ins within a browser. The goal is to replace the current Netscape API that Flash Player uses.
The new API is code-named “Pepper” and is intended to provide a layer between the plug-in and the browser to take away any differences between the browser and operating system used. The goal of Pepper is to provide an implementation of Flash Player, which will work for all x86/64 platforms that the Google Chro...

ASUS has released the bootloader unlock tool for the Eee Pad Transformer Prime this morning, and developers have wasted no time in opening up the Tegra 3 tablet to Ubuntu. Prime owner littlesteve had a Ubuntu build prepped and waiting for just this day, though there are still some hardware issues to iron out: no touchscreen support, for instance, so that a Bluetooth mouse is necessary for navigation.

Could SEGA rescue Sony and Nintendo?
Like UnlikeFiled in: SonyNintendo
Sony and Nintendo have each turned to gaming stalwart SEGA to help them pad out their gaming options, resurrecting classic titles from the company’s back catalog for the PS3 and 3DS. The PlayStation Plus gaming membership program now offers six Genesis titles – including Sonic 1 and Streets of Rage 2 - for free download, while Nintendo’s Virtual Console for the 3DS will get its own selection of titles from SEGA’s Game Gear line-up.
PS3 gamers get a second shot at Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Golden Axe, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Streets of Rage 2. The six games went up for download in 2011, but were promptly whipped away again. It’s not clear how long they’ll remain in the PlayStation Plus catalog...

Microsoft snipes at Google Apps in latest ad
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Microsoft can’t seem to stop taking pot-shots at Google, and following the privacy-fear-flogging Gmail Man video comes an attack on the Office-rivaling Google Apps. The new video – which you can see after the cut – pits a sleazy Google Apps salesman against the enterprise market and, somewhat bizarrely, some soulful crooning about how we should fear the “Googlighting” man and the possibility that Google could simply pull the plug on features we’re reliant on or, in fact, whole services.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-MobileGalaxy S Blaze 4G
The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze, first teased in early January has been confirmed by T-Mobile to be landing on the network in ‘late March’ for $150 on a two-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate is applied. The device is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. The Galaxy S Blaze centers on a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and sports a 5-megapixel rear camera that shoots video at up to 720p, with a 1.3 front-facing camera for video chatting. While it boats a respectable set of hardware specs, the only real disappointment for users is that it will...
