Duqu Trojan contains mystery programming language in Payload DLL
Like UnlikeExperts at Russian computer security company Kaspersky have come to the conclusion that parts of the Duqu Trojan are written in an unknown programming language. Much of the code is identified as standard C++ but the team is clueless as to the origin of other segments and is asking the programming community for assistance.
Duqu borrows heavily from another high-profile security threat, Stuxnet, with some even referring to it as Stuxnet 2.0. The code in question is part of the Payload DLL, a section of the trojan that sends and receives instructions from an outside source once it has infiltrated a system. It is object-oriented but otherwise unlike anything the team at Kaspersky has seen before...

Google pay TV greenlighted in Kansas City
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsGoogle
Google’s ambitious project to enter the competitive pay TV market has just passed the first of its many hurdles it must overcome. The search giant was granted approval from the Missouri Public Service Commission to build a new network and infrastructure in Kansas City. The company plans to offer service in both Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.
The Kansas authorities are still in the process of going over the request. It is in that area that Google began deploying a fiber optic network, and it’s the only area that anyone at Google is even talking about when it comes to pay TV right now. Assumedly Google would want to expand if things initially work out there. But there is still ...

Police reportedly plan to raid The Pirate Bay
Like UnlikeSwedish authorities have reportedly secured warrants and are planning to raid The Pirate Bay. Unnamed Pirate Bay team members speaking with TorrentFreak claim to have learned that the raid is currently being planned by Swedish police, and they expect the operation to target Pirate Bay servers and the site’s new .se domain. Law enforcement officials in Sweden first raided The Pirate Bay in 2006, and the company’s founders were eventually sentenced to jail and forced to pay millions in fines. The service remained online, however, and it is still operational today. “The Swedish district attorney Fredrik Ingblad initiated a new investigation into The Pirate Bay back in 2010. Information has been...

'Anonymous' hackers leak Norton AntiVirus source code
Like UnlikeHackers associated with the group “Anonymous” have published Symantec’s Norton AntiVirus source code on The Pirate Bay. The source code was stolen in 2006 and after alleged attempts to extort money from Symantec failed, the hactivist group released it late Thursday evening. The file is 1.07GB in size and includes the source code to a number of products within the software suite, such as the consumer version, the corporate edition, and other files for Windows, Unix and NetWare, according to a report from ZDNet. In addition to the source code, the torrent includes a note calling for the release of the LulzSec hackers who were arrested on Tuesday — with the exception of Sabu, the group’s leader...

FCC scrutinizing Verizon's petition to acquire spectrum
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Bad news for Verizon as the FCC formally announced its disapproval of the company’s potential $3.6 billion acquisition of spectrum from cable companies (Cox, Time Warner, Comcast, and Brighthouse). The feds want the largest cell phone provider in the United Sates to resend its filings because it feels the original filings submitted by Verizon Wireless were full of holes, simply put, the government needs more information about the proposed deal.
The FCC’s message to Verizon yesterday was, ”In order for the Commission to complete its review of the applications and consider the necessary public interest findings…we require that you provide by March 12, 2012, a revised copy of the redacted versi...

Google pushes Android developers towards use of Google Wallet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
When developers first started to populate the Android Market, Google didn’t have an in-house solution for in-app transactions. As a result developers turned to third party payment options, such as PayPal, Boku, and Zong. While this solved the problem of enabling payments inside of Android apps, the multiple competing payment platforms hurt the rate at which app users purchased items (the “conversion rate”), because not all potential users would have the necessary payment account set up.
To address this, Google is now pushing developers to adopt the use of Google Wallet for all in-app payments. Users that purchase apps already have a Google Wallet account by default, so while switching the pa...

Are we still judging Apple by Steve Jobs?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
As we've mentioned a number of times now, often in defense of Google, companies have personalities, insofar as companies reflect the personality of their CEOs. We have mentioned this in order to squash silly rumors that Google is out to steal your private data, or is planning to implode the Android ecosystem by closing it off and making its own devices with Motorola. This time though, we have to take a moment to consider how this philosophy affects Apple. Apple is known as Steve Jobs' company, and essentially an extension of the man himself. The trouble is that Steve is no longer the CEO; Tim Cook is.

Major Google Chrome vulnerability fixed in 24 hours
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
On Wednesday, a Russian hacker discovered a vulnerability in Google’s Chrome web browser during CanSecWest’s Pwnium hacker contest. It was the first time in four years at the competition that Chrome was hacked, and for his efforts, Sergey Glazunov was rewarded with $60,000. Less than 24 hours after the exploit was brought to Google’s attention, the search giant released an update fixing the vulnerability. “The Chrome Stable channel has been updated to 17.0.963.78 on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame,” Google wrote on its Chrome update blog. “This release fixes issues with Flash games and videos, along with the security fix listed below.” Glazunov’s vulnerability is described as an “UXSS a...

Google hastily updates Play Store, fixes broken Market on Motorola devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid
Motorola Droid RAZR fans were left out in the cold when Google decided to pull the wraps off its revamped content hub. The new Play Store app didn't seem to bond too well with Motorola's Blur OS skin, leaving phones scanning desperately for a non-existent Android Market and trapping users out of the app version of the store. Google's got on it quickly though, with a new Google Play update out now, righting what was once wrong. According to Droid Life, wiping the new hub's application data in settings should coax the update out instantly. And you'd think the two would talk about these things.

Apple forced to cut profit margins with new iPad, analyst says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In an effort to keep the iPad’s price the same, Apple may have had to cut profit margins compared to previous models, The Wall Street Journal reported. UBM TechInsights on Thursday estimated the company’s newest iPad cost about $310 to manufacture the 16GB, 4G LTE model, which retails for $629. Based on those estimates, Apple’s gross profit margin is 51%, 5 points less than the iPad 2′s 56% margin at the tablet’s launch. The cost increase is largely due to the new iPad’s Retina display, which UBM estimates to cost Apple about $70 compared to the $49.50 display found on the iPad 2. The 4G LTE chips also add $21 compared to $10 for 3G chips, and the A5X processor chip is estimated to costs $28...

Nokia distributing Lumia 900 to developers, job applicants
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
WPCentral reports that developers have started receiving Nokia Lumia 900 handsets in USA. Nokia has earlier said they intend to give away 25,000 handsets to developers, so the company is clearly pretty generous with their hardware.
In fact they are so generous they are even giving away a handset every 30 min to job applicants at their job recruitment day in San Diego on March 15th.
While there is rumours that the handset is delayed, it seems a lucky few will getting their hands-on after all.

Google revamps its Windows Phone app
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Google released an updated mobile app for Windows phone devices, adding few cool features to the mix.
First of all, there’s Autocomplete, offering search predictions as you type. This in turn, will give you results faster, making you spend less of your precious mobile data.
Then there’s Voice Search, which removes the need to type your query. Simply tap the microphone icon and say what you want to find.
Finally, Google for Windows Phone can now access your location to provide you with nearby results. For location-specific queries this will save you a ton of time — you don’t actually care about coffee shops and Italian restaurants in other States – all you want to know is which one of them ca...

HTC Sensation Ice Cream Sandwich update is now live in parts of Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleSensation 4GAndroid 4.0
Reports from around the web suggest some HTC Sensation users in Europe have started getting their serving of Ice Cream Sandwich. While we don’t see the pattern HTC is using to rollout the new firmware, it is clear that at first only folks with unlocked devices are getting Android 4.0.3.
The Taiwanese company is strangely quiet (for such a big news), so we keep listening to other people and their reactions. As far as we’ve understood, alongside Ice Cream Sandwich, HTC is also pushing updated version (3.6) of its Sense UI.
