Nvidia Among Linux Foundation's Newest Members
Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
The Linux Foundation earlier this week welcomed four new members. It’s not the number of new members that’s important here, though. What’s more important is the fact that one these new Linux patrons is graphics chip maker Nvidia. Hit the jump for more.
The Santa Clara, California-based company has joined the Linux Foundation as a silver member. While undoubtedly an important addition, Nvidia is not the first major chip maker on the non-profit consortium’s membership roll, which already boasts the likes of Intel (platinum member) and AMD (gold member).

Google May Be Developing Motion Interface for Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google is working to turn a device's front-facing camera into a motion-input system, allowing consumers to use gestures instead of greasing up the screen with fingerprints. If granted, the company could reportedly take this patent down several avenues, including incorporating the technology into Android itself, saving the tech for Motorola, or hording the patent for use against rivals Apple and Microsoft.

Wikipedia Dumps GoDaddy Due To GD's Pro-SOPA/PIPA Stance
Like UnlikeA couple of months have passed since the SOPA/PIPA uproar, and things on the online rights front have simmered down quite a bit, for the most part -- Megaupload and related happenings aside. One organization hasn't forgotten the promises it made in the heat of the moment, however: the Wikimedia Foundation. If you remember, Jimmy Wales said Wikipedia would transition away from GoDaddy's services because of the registrar's support for the controversial bill. That transition is currently underway, Wikimedia revealed in a blog post Wednesday.

The duo is expected to unveil the device as early as May with the previously reported price range of $199 to $249 USD. The news arrives after Google debunked rumors that the tablet would be called Google Play, as it consolidated its four main services into one network brand using that very name.

IBM optical chip moves data at 1Tbps
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
IBM researchers have developed a prototype optical chip that can transfer data at 1Tbps (terabit per second), the equivalent of downloading 500 high-definition movies, using light pulses, the company said today.
The chip, called Holey Optochip, is a parallel optical transceiver consisting of both a transmitter and a receiver, and is designed to handle the large amount of data created and transmitted over corporate and consumer networks as a result of new applications and services. It is expected to power future supercomputer and data center applications, an area where IBM already uses optical technology.

Valve estimated to be worth over $3 billion
Like UnlikeForbes reports privately-held game developer Valve is estimated to be worth more than $3 billion. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell owns more than 50 percent of the company, giving him an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion. The magazine puts him 854th on the list of 1,226 global dollar billionaires.
Privately-held Valve Corporation is tight-lipped about revenues, and Newell doesn’t comment on his personal finances. So in order to estimate his net worth, Forbes consulted with video game industry insiders, equity analysts, investment bankers, and technology analysts to figure out what the company is worth. Even the most conservative estimates put Valve’s enterprise value at more than $3 billion, a...

Intel Wants PCI Express 3.0 Inside Thunderbolt
Like UnlikeFiled in: Intel
Intel's Thunderbolt interconnect interface may not be mainstream just yet, but Intel is determined to push it forward making use of the latest PCI Express 3.0 standard.
Right now, Thunderbolt does not even come close to its full potential, mostly because it uses copper wires instead of optical cables.
Had it been made with fiber optics from the start, it would have easily attained its apex of 50 Gbps, but the current iteration only hovers around 10 Gbps. Still, not only does the standard relay data, but it integrates the DisplayPort connection as well, for displays.

Single Slot Radeon HD 7850
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsAMDRadeon HD 7850
AFOX out of Hong Kong showed off a custom made Radeon HD 7850 card at CeBIT as vrzone reported. The card is the first single slot Radeon HD 7850 card we've seen so far and despite this, AFOX has managed to squeeze in four display connectors.
The AF7850-1024D5S1 as the card is awkwardly called also differs in terms of its overall specification compared to AMD's reference cards. For one, the GPU is clocked at 900MHz rather than 860MHz, a fairly modest overclock, but still a peculiar move considering the single slot the design. As the model name gives away, AFOX halved the graphics memory to 1GB and underclocked it by 75MHz (300MHz effectively) for an effective clock speed of 4.5GHz compared to...
