Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales becoming adviser to British government
Like UnlikeWikipedia founder and friend of students everywhere Jimmy Wales is set to become an unpaid adviser to the British government. Prime Minister David Cameron's special policy adviser Rohan Silva revealed the news in a presentation on "Open Source Government, Enterprise and Innovation" at SXSW yesterday, suggesting that Wales will contribute to several specific projects though he gave no detail on what this might entail. The choice of Wales is hardly surprising — his success in creating the world's biggest crowd sourced website makes him the perfect candidate to help guide parliament's web presence.

Hector Xavier Monsegur: LulzSec leader, FBI informant, and cyberpunk antihero
Like UnlikeWith the arrest of several alleged members of Anonymous offshoot LulzSec, court documents have revealed new information about Hector Xavier Monsegur (aka Sabu), the LulzSec leader-turned-informant. From his apartment in the projects, Monsegur raised his aunt's two children while leading LulzSec in attacks on Visa, Stratfor, and several government agencies. When arrested, he continued his work with LulzSec, this time as an informant for the FBI. It's a life reminiscent of a William Gibson protagonist or a member of the street gangs that populated Gibson's Sprawl. The Panther Moderns from Neuromancer, for example, are a group of "mercenaries, practical jokers, nihilistic technofetishists" who ...

HTC Titan performs vanishing act from UK shelves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCTitan
The huge HTC Titan has subtly dropped off a number of online retailers with no explanation as to why.
The HTC Titan, which was released last year, rocks a 4.7-inch Super LCD screen, 8MP camera, 16GB internal storage and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.
Retailers Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U along with networks Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile all appear to have dropped the HTC Titan from their ranges.
Not so mighty now
It's thought that the HTC Titan may have been dropped due to a lack of demand and poor sales of the handset.

Apple drops a patent and some claims against Samsung in ITC suit
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungApple
Earlier today, we told you about Apple's claim in federal court that Samsung had not entirely complied with the ruling of a judge. But there is more Apple-Samsung action to report, this time involving the former's suit filed with the ITC. Last week, the ITC gave Apple a favorable ruling on the claim construction involving the Cupertino based firm's interpretation of two patents while ruling with Samsung on its claim construction on a third patent.
The claim construction rulings determine if the judge agrees with either side about certain terms used in each parties claims and can often decide who will win a patent infringement case. The patent involved in the claim construction that Samsung w...

T-Mobile HTC One S shows up in FCC with AWS bands?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCOne S
It doesn't come right out and say it, but we have a strong suspicion that the HTC PJ40110 -- approved by the FCC today -- refers to T-Mobile's version of the HTC One S. This model offers an AWS 3G radio, in addition to AT&T-friendly 850 /1900 3G bands, and its ID is just a slight nudge from the PJ40100 (global One S). The timing of this seal of approval lines up with T-Mo's spring launch aspirations, and this is one particular device (pun unintended but welcome) we can't wait to see in stores.

New Microsoft software can translate voices into foreign languages
Like UnlikeFiled in: Microsoft
Researchers at Microsoft have created software that can translate a user’s voice into a foreign languages, a solution with the potential to revolutionize communications, MIT’s Technology Review reported on Monday. “We will be able to do quite a few scenario applications,” said Microsoft researcher Frank Soong. “For a monolingual speaker traveling in a foreign country, we’ll do speech recognition followed by translation, followed by the final text to speech output [in] a different language, but still in his own voice.” Read on for more.
Along with removing the language barrier for travelers, the software could be used to help students learn a new language. Having the ability to hear one’s own...

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
While the new features found in the iOS 5.1 update were fairly minimal, one that snuck under the radar was an increase to the maximum download file size over 3G/4G networks. The new version of iOS allows downloads of up to 50 MBs to be conducted over cellular networks, a fairly sizable increase from the previous 20MB limit.
Accounting for the increase is Apple’s new iPad, which is slated to launch on Friday. The new iPad features an HD Retina display, which will drive application file sizes up as developers build more intensive programs to support the new display and the Retina graphics the devices are capable of providing. Users of the AT&T, Verizon, and upcoming Sprint variants of the iPad...

The 5MP camera on back offers AF and captures video at 720p
