Posted on Mar 12, 2012 by MG1

Samsung apparently is about to launch a new phone in India later this month, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus. This is not the high-end Samsung Ace 2, but is an entry-level device that was originally introduced in January. The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus also made the trip to Barcelona last month for MWC and Indian online retailer Flipkart says it will ship on March 21st. For now though, Flipkart is accepting pre-orders for the phone, which will cost 16,275 INR ($327 USD).
The Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus will come to market with a 3.65 HVGA display, and a rather meager pixel density of 158 ppi. a single-core 1GHz processor captains the ship with 512MB of RAM on board. The unit offers 3GB of native storage...

Samsung teases Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich update

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

Samsung is toying with our emotions as it announced the Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich update would be available tomorrow, only for it to dismiss the report hours later.
The initial report regarding the Samsung Galaxy S2 Ice Cream Sandwich update appeared on Samsung's Filipino portal and declared Galaxy S2 users would be able to upgrade their handsets on March 10.
Unfortunately Samsung was quick to respond via its Samsung Tomorrow Twitter account, stating that the Filipino announcement was "wrong" and "not true".
Hopes dashed, tears shed
We've been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the Ice Cream Sandwich update to hit the Galaxy S2 and Samsung is still unwilling to provide an...

Here's how to trade in your "old iPad" and get the best value for it

The new iPad arrived with a bang on Wednesday and you’ve had enough time to read our initial thoughts, check out the specs, drool on that new Retina display and appreciate its addition of LTE connectivity with no battery life sacrifices. In a nutshell, you want it. Just like you wanted the iPad 2 and just like you wanted the OG iPad.
But do you just stack it up along with that “old iPad” that just now looks terribly outdated in your eyes? And are you ready to just feed Apple another $500 or more without getting anything back for your iPad?
There are a couple of ways to sell your old iPad and not feel all that bad for getting the new one. You probably know the standard drill. You auction the ...

iPad's A5X chip may not come to the next iPhone

iPad's A5X chip may not come to the next iPhone

Filed in: Apple

Unless you live under a rock, you probably know that the new iPad was unveiled on Wednesday. And one of the things that makes it better than its predecessor is the new A5X chip, which has two main processing cores and four additional cores that handle graphics processing.
Now lets go back in history for a minute. Remember how the A4 chip debuted under the hood of the first-gen iPad? The iPhone 4 eventually launched with an A4 processor too. Then the dual-core A5 was first used in the iPad 2 only to make it to the iPhone 4S afterwards. But according to analysts, Apple might not follow suit for the next iPhone iteration. Or in other words, the A5X might not be used for the next iPhone.

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Redsn0w jailbreaking tool updated to support iOS 5.1

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

It hadn’t even been 24 hours since Apple released iOS 5.1, and the hacking community has already let loose the first tethered jailbreaking tool for the updated OS. According to Redmond Pie, the iPhone Dev Team has updated Redsn0w to allow users to jailbreak their iOS 5.1 devices. The jailbreak is tethered, however, so users will be required to connect their devices to a computer each time they are powered on. The exploit works for all devices running iOS 5.1 with the exception of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Original HTC Magic available on Canada's Rogers for $25.48/month on 1-year contract

Original HTC Magic available on Canada's Rogers for $25.48/month on 1-year contract

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

Check this out. Canada’s Rogers Wireless is offering the original HTC Magic to its customers. This is a limited time offer, since only few of these will be offered to hard-core Android fanboys. I can’t imagine anyone wishing a 3-year old device these days, but what do I know. This could easily be a memorabilia item.
I’m not sure which version of Android this baby runs, but I would assume it doesn’t go beyond 2.1 Éclair.
On a sidenote, we must add that HTC has come a long way from Magic, with their modern smartphones looking way, way better. Just take a look at their new One models – all of them look fantastic, or at least I think so.
Anyway, you can check out Rogers’ HTC Magic offer from her...

Russian university student Sergey Glazunov was able to hack into a secure Windows 7 machine using a remote code execution exploit in Google’s Chrome web browser in five minutes, ZDNet reported Wednesday. The exploit was found during CanSecWest’s Pwnium hacker contest, a competition similar to the popular Pwn2Own contest. Google offered a total of $1 million dollar in prize money to hackers who could exploit the company’s Chrome web browser. Glazunov was rewarded $60,000 for his exploit, which found a way around Chrome’s sandbox using vulnerabilities in the extension system. “It didn’t break out of the sandbox [but] it avoided the sandbox,” said Justin Schuh, a member of the Chrome security t...

Anonymous planning new DNS amplification tool for large-scale attacks

Anonymous planning new DNS amplification tool for large-scale attacks

Posted on Mar 09, 2012 by MG1

Anonymous has made a name for itself with attacks on everyone from the Syrian government to the Department of Justice, and now the group is planning a new system for even bigger attacks, reports Ars Technica. The idea is to use an existing form of attack called DNS amplification, which can take a small number of requests from an attacker and turn it into a flood of data on the target's machine — network traffic can reach into the hundreds of gigabytes per second, and worse still, the attacker remains undetected. With enough participants on the attacking end this type of attack can be very effective. The new tool would use this technique in conjunction with other kinds of attacks — including ...

Anonymous takes down Vatican website

Posted on Mar 08, 2012 by MG1

Notorious hacker group Anonymous has taken down the Vatican’s website today in an attack against the scandals and conservative doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. The Italian branch of the hacker group claimed responsibility for the breach and even posted a statement listing the Church’s misdeeds throughout history.
“Anonymous decided today to besiege your site in response to the doctrine, to the liturgies, to the absurd and anachronistic concepts that your for-profit organisation spreads around the world,” said the hackers in a statement posted to its Italian website. “This attack is not against the Christian religion or the faithful around the world but against the corrupt Roman Apostol...

Every year Google offers a bounty to those that can dig up security flaws in its browser. This year, the company is putting $1 million on the line at CanSecWest. But, before the Mountain View crew can even pack up for the event, it's got to cut checks for $47,000 to four different researchers. The vulnerability bounty hunters found 14 flaws in Chrome that were patched in a update on March 4th. That big payout included three separate $10,000 bonuses for "sustained, extraordinary" contributions to the browser's security. For full details on the bugs and the price paid for each, hit up the source.

Computers infected with DNSChanger get a reprieve from internet cut off

Computers infected with DNSChanger get a reprieve from internet cut off

Posted on Mar 08, 2012 by MG1

The US government has secured an extension to keep computers infected with the DNSChanger malware connected to the internet until July 9th. The move prolongs the original date of March 8th set by the Southern District of New York court, which would have seen the remaining infected systems be cut off from the web. Systems infected with DNSChanger — which were originally reported to number about four million worldwide, including systems at half of all fortune 500 companies and US federal agencies — currently access the internet through temporary DNS servers that replaced the rogue servers seized by the FBI. While the instances of DNSChanger appear to have dropped significantly, the original 12...

Google applies for patent that identifies your location by using a snapped photo of a landmark

Posted on Mar 08, 2012 by MG1

Google has filed for a patent on a way to help those who are lost, find their current location. By snapping a picture of a local landmark, the person who is lost sends the photo to Google where the Mountain View based firm's servers go through the snapshot seeking a match. If a match can be made, the lost person's position is sent to his mobile device.
With GPS, the whole process might seem a little redundant, but there are times when the GPS on your phone or tablet just doesn't work or the information isn't accurate for one reason or another. Besides, we really can't imagine anything being as simple as snapping a picture. And the diagram from the patent application makes so much common sens...
