Mozilla reconsiders its stance on h.264 video codec

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Mozilla may be acquiescing when it comes to only supporting open and free standards, as it seems the popular h.264 video codec will soon be accessible on Mozilla's Boot2Gecko project and Firefox for Android. Andreas Gal, Mozilla's director of research, outlined the plan that would allow mobile versions of it's open-source browsers to use h.264 when it's available via a device's operating system. Using the codec this way would allow the organization to avoid the $5 million in licensing fees that it would have to pay to include the h.264 within its browser.

Nokia is working on a tablet, the company’s design chief has reportedly confirmed, with the exec supposedly spending a third of his time on the well-rumored project. “We are working on it” Marko Ahtisaari confirmed to Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio, Reuters reports, though declined to be more specific about the incoming slate. However, rumors earlier this week suggested a Windows 8 tablet was in the pipeline for later this year.

HIS is working on a new custom-design Radeon HD 7970 graphics card, based on its newest cooling innovation, the HIS HD 7970 IceQ X². This is the first cooling solution in the IceQ family to feature two fans. It is designed to be competitive with several other AIB-designed twin-fan cooling solutions out there, MSI TwinFrozr III, PowerColor PCS+, and Sapphire Dual-Fan, to name a few. The cooler is designed to keep the card within the dimensions of two expansion slots, while increasing the height just a little.

The new iPad doesn't allow FaceTime over LTE

The new iPad doesn't allow FaceTime over LTE

Filed in: TabletsAppleiPad 3

We've just confirmed that although the new iPad has incredibly fast download and upload speeds over LTE, FaceTime video chat still won't work directly on the 4G network. As you can see in the positively vexing screenshot above, attempting to initiate a FaceTime call over LTE fails out with a message exhorting you to connect to a Wi-Fi network. It's the exact same behavior that iOS devices on 3G networks have always exhibited, but it's doubly frustrating as Verizon's LTE plans for the new iPad include Wi-Fi hotspot functionality at no extra cost. In other words, you could easily initiate a Wi-Fi hotspot from your new Verizon LTE iPad and use it to successfully make a FaceTime call from an iPh...

Google to use 'semantic search' to add answers to search results, says WSJ

Google is apparently planning the biggest shakeup in its search results page in a long time, according to the Wall Street Journal. The plan is apparently to use "semantic search" to analyze the meaning of words and phrases typed into the search query box and then return relevant answers instead of a simple list of ranked results. The move would mirror functionality already offered by Microsoft's Bing search engine, which offers direct answers on questions about flights, travel, and other queries.

Microsoft fixes temporary Xbox Live Achievement fiasco

Microsoft fixes temporary Xbox Live Achievement fiasco

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

For several hours today, Xbox 360 players had a horrible sinking feeling in their gut when they look at their Xbox Live profile and saw that they had no achievements. For some, that meant it looked as though 6.5 long years of building up a horde of digital accomplishments had been wiped away in an instant. Luckily, the problem had been solved with no reported loss of data.

AOL promises it's not getting rid of Instant Messenger

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Yesterday we reported that the AOL Instant Messenger team was "eviscerated" in a new round of layoffs at the company, as the company tries to focus its assets into key growth areas. Today, AOL is insisting to Computerworld that "we are not killing Instant Messenger," claiming that just because it's laying off some 40 employees (with more cuts on the horizon), doesn't mean it's abandoning the platform. Although AOL promises to "continue to support it and evolve the product," the small size of the remaining team still makes it seem likely that things like updates and support are going to become a lot more scarce.

We'd heard that the BBC was putting together a video download service that will allow it to better monetize its back catalog, and now it appears the company has confirmed the news. BBC News itself reports that the network's director general Mark Thompson stated that the initiative was in the works during an appearance at the Royal Television Society in London. He reiterated the previously-leaked details: the service will allow users to download content from the BBC's archives for a "relatively modest" fee, and it will not affect the free viewing window currently provided by the network's iPlayer application. "The BBC's archive programs — like Fawlty Towers and Doctor Who — already...

Signs posted around Hong Kong Apple Store say new iPad won't be sold on first-come first-served basis

Things are a little different at the Apple Store in Hong Kong. While we might expect to see long lines at most of the other Apple Stores around the world and some jockeying for position as the new iPad is sold on a first-come, first-served basis, signs posted outside the Apple Store in Hong Kong specifically prohibit certain activities. In English, the signs say "No Staying or Queuing up here. Apple will not serve on a first come first served basis for new iPad. Please refer to Apple's official website for the detailed arrangement". Without an Apple on the post, it seems that it is the Hong Kong Police who posted the signs. The new Apple iPad launches this Friday, March 16th at many location...

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new 15-inch MacBook Air notebook PC in April. The report from Electricpig cites a “premium Mac accessory maker,” who claims a new 15-inch model will feature ports on both sides, with no optical drive or Ethernet port. A 15-inch Air model has been rumored before — DigiTimes previously reported that a 15-inch model was slated to launch in the first quarter of 2012 alongside a new 11-inch and 13-inch model. The Taiwanese publication, however, has also reported that an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook with Air-like features would launch in the second quarter this year.

Are Europe's wireless operators working together to screw everyone?

Are Europe's wireless operators working together to screw everyone?

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, and Vodafone; these are the five wireless operators that pretty much run the show over in Europe. The European Commission is said to be curious as to the kind of meetings these companies have had behind closed doors. Are they working together to artificially keep prices high? Are they planning and scheming on how to stop Apple from becoming such a dominate player? The world may never know. It should be noted that a formal investigation hasn’t officially started, but when the European Commission starts poking their head into matters like this, one should assume that they’re like a drug sniffing dog, desperately trying to find somet...

Rumor: AT&T to launch the Nokia Lumia 900 on April 8th?

Posted on Mar 15, 2012 by MG3

Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January of this year. AT&T said they would offer it, but they failed to mention when it would actually hit store shelves or say how much it’s going to cost. Here we are, two months later, and we still don’t have those details. Earlier rumors suggested it would come out on the 18th of March, which is this coming Sunday, but now there’s word on the street that an April 8th launch date is more likely. This information comes from someone who claims to be an employee at one of AT&T’s retail stores in California.

T-Mobile USA has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to mandate interoperability of LTE devices that use the 700MHz spectrum used by AT&T and Verizon Wireless. This would allow devices made for either carrier to roam between the two, and would make it easier for other carriers to set up roaming agreements for LTE service.

Notorious hacker group “Anonymous Operations” on Wednesday released the first version of its own desktop operating system. Dubbed Anonymous-OS, the computer platform is built on top of the open-source Linux-based Ubuntu 11.10 operating system, and it also utilizes the open-source Mate desktop environment, The Hacker News reports. It is unclear exactly who is behind the operating system, which comes with a number of tools pre-installed that are apparently Anonymous-approved. Included are Anonymous HOIC, John the Ripper, SQL Poison and more. Version 0.1 of the hacker group’s Anonymous-OS is free and available immediately for download, though readers should obviously exercise caution.
