Nokia granted slide-to-unlock patent as well
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
Apple and Google aren't the only companies looking to patent and trademark everyone's favorite gesture to unlock a smartphone, as Nokia has recently been granted a patent on its own implementation of slide-to-unlock.
Unlike Apple's patent, which covers a horizontal motion from one side of the screen to another along a pre-defined path, Nokia's patent involves sliding an icon across the screen that will reveal an otherwise hidden app. Slide the icon far enough and the app icon comes into view, and the app will launch once the icon is fully covering it.

Web host confirms The Pirate Bay is under investigation
Like UnlikeSwedish registrar and Web host Binero on Wednesday confirmed earlier reports suggesting digital piracy hub The Pirate Bay is currently under investigation by authorities in Sweden. Members of The Pirate Bay team reported last week that they believe the site is currently the focus of a new investigation, and that Swedish police are planning to execute a raid in an effort to seize Pirate Bay servers. IDG’s ComputerSweden on Wednesday reported that the site’s Web host has confirmed that the group’s suspicions are at least partially true. ”We can confirm that an investigation is underway against the Pirate Bay. We received a letter with questions,” Binero representative Erik Arnberg said. ”We wi...

Cricket looks to enhance LTE rollout plan, strikes five-year deal with Clearwire
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cricket
It looks as if the Big G's plan to offload its Clearwire stake didn't stop Cricket from striking a deal with the Sprint-born network. The five-year agreement allows the underdog wireless carrier to use Clearwire's LTE Advanced-ready waves to aid with its own rollout, which is expected to be fleshing out over the next "two to three years." Similar to that LightsSquared pact from last year, mum's the word on how much cash was involved in the signing. That said, chances are all you care about is how speedy the 4G browsing will be (and how much you can use before getting throttled).

Oracle suit against Google goes to trial next month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
A U.S. judge in San Francisco has scheduled the trial between Oracle and Google for April 16th, Reuters reported on Tuesday. Oracle sued Google in 2010, alleging that the Mountain View-based company’s Android operating system infringes Oracle’s intellectual property covering the Java programming language. In addition, the company is also suing Google for copyright infringement, which could earn Oracle hundreds of millions of dollars. “These patent and copyright claims are without merit, and we look forward to defending against them at trial,” Google spokesman Jim Prosser said. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.

LTE and HSPA+ versions of BlackBerry PlayBook pass FCC testing
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksRIM BlackBerry
It's hard to say that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been a success by any standard, but it seems that RIM may think that has more to do with the fact that there has only been a WiFi version so far, rather than any problems with the lack of functionality in the original software. Still, the PlayBook 2.0 software fixed most of the issues we had with the software.

First glimpse of the Intel-Samsung Tizen OS gallery surface, looks like a DNA spiral (video)
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungIntel
MeeGo gets to live in Intel and Samsung's labs in the form of the open-source Tizen mobile OS, which is apparently prepped to be the newest playground in the quest to take on Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
Samsung already said that Tizen and its own mobile OS bada might merge one day, and the Tizen project was also endorsed by Huawei recently. We've seen the typical grid of thumbnails when it comes to the gallery in early Tizen alphas, but things are apparently progressing as a new leak shows a revamped 3D interface there.

Samsung's Galaxy S III is done, in production, and set to be amazing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
One device that was sorely missed from Mobile World Congress last month was Samsung’s third generation Galaxy S. The South Korean handset maker let us know well in advance that they weren’t going to be showing off their latest flagship at MWC, so it’s not like we were disappointed, but we have to admit that we did feel a bit empty inside. We know the Galaxy S III will be announced during the first half of this year and start shipping soon thereafter, but today we have some new information courtesy of Eldar Murtazin, Editor in Chief of Mobile-Review. According to him the Galaxy S III has been finalized, it’s currently being mass produced, and “preorders from operators/retailers are really hig...

Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 gets its first post ICS software update
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsASUSEee Pad Transformer TF101
Last month, Asus Eee Pad Transformer owners were given the delightful news about the tablet’s in with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Of course, the software update eventually made its way to tablet owners, but it doesn’t seem that things have been going smoothly for some people – and in fact, the update has been wreaking havoc instead.
Well folks, Asus is doing things right, naturally, as Asus’ first-generation Android tablet is seeing its first post Ice Cream Sandwich update. Specifically, the new update for the tablet is labeled 9.2.1.17-20123012, but there’s no changelog attached to it. Therefore, it’s anyone’s guess as to exactly what the new software update actually brings to the table...

Stephen Elop says dual-, quad-core phones just waste battery life
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop faces the tough task to break the Android-iOS smartphone duopoly, and if it could be done with words, these would have been the ones: "dual-core, quad-core mobile phones are just a waste of battery, not all are so useful."
The bold statement of Nokia’s head is “proved” by the Smoked by Windows Phone campaign, where random users with iPhones and Androids try to do something with their phones and end up doing it slower than it’s done on Nokia Windows Phones. Nokia offered $160 to people that can beat their Windows Phone devices in the challenge and reportedly it never lost.
