PlayStation Vita will miss Christmas shopping season in U.S., Europe

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

Sony’ next-generation portable video game console will not launch in the U.S. until early 2012, Sony Executive Vice President Kazuo Hirai told The Associated Press on Thursday. Sony’s PlayStation Vita will become available later this year in Japan, but it will miss the all-important holiday shopping season here in the U.S. and in Europe as well. Some, such as Daiwa Securities Capital Markets analyst Koki Shiraishi, believe Sony’s sales will take a huge hit as a result. “That’s when you do half your year’s sales,” Shiraishi told the AP. “This is going to prove painful for Sony.” When it finally does launch next year, the PlayStation Vita will start at $249 for a Wi-Fi-only model and a 3G-equi...

Sony PRS-T1 Reader wanders into the FCC with WiFi on board

Sony PRS-T1 Reader wanders into the FCC with WiFi on board

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

What exactly is a PRS-T1? Well, it's a new Sony Reader and it just so happens to have swung through the FCC with a WiFi n radio in tow. As you can see above, the regulatory label proudly proclaims this to be a "Digital Book Reader," though we could have guessed that from the PRS model number. What else do we know? Not much sadly. We're guess the T1 in the model name indicates that, whatever the panel's size, it'll be of the touchscreen variety. (Either that, or this is the tapenade colored model.) Despite Sony's official denials, looks like that rumored August launch for the company's latest e-ink devices may actually pan out.

Sony, Sharp and Fujitsu earnings all bring bad news, only Toshiba says something nice

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Plenty of Japanese earnings news today and, as with Nintendo, most of it's pretty dire. Sony's hit from the earthquake and PSN outtage has inevitably contaminated this quarter, but it's suffered from slow Bravia TV, PC and camcorder sales too. Together, these factors contributed a hefty ¥15.5 billion ($200 million) loss in the three months to the end of June, compared to a ¥25.7 billion profit for the same quarter last year.
Meanwhile, Fujitsu also lost ¥20.4 billion, which it largely attributed to a 6.7 percent decline in Japanese sales following the disaster. However, sales in other countries also fell 5.3 percent, reflecting a stronger yen and general lack of consumer demand.
Despite ever...

Sony Insurer Claims It Shouldn't Have to Pay Off After Hack

Sony Insurer Claims It Shouldn't Have to Pay Off After Hack

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

An insurer for Sony says that it shouldn't have to pay off legal claims for the Sony PlayStation Network earlier this year.
Zurich American Insurance told a New York state court that it did not feel that it should be held responsible for compensating Sony for a attack on Sony's network that forced the game-console provider to take down the PlayStation Network for weeks. Subsequent hacks also attacked Sony sites in Japan and Europe.
Zurich American's documents allege that it should be liable for claims "asserted in the class-action lawsuits, miscellaneous claims, or potential future actions instituted by any state attorney general," according to Reuters, which first reported the story.

Recent reports suggest that Sony’s PlayStation 4 may already be in the works with suppliers revealing that production could start by the end of 2011 with Foxconn and Pegatron at the helm of assembly. In the wake of the PlayStation Network disaster, many believe that Sony will need the PS4 to turn things around ASAP. But what might the PS4 look like?
Designer Joseph Dumary has conjured up a very futuristic-looking PS4 concept that’s also very eco-friendly—but what design concepts aren’t these days? He imagines the new console to be composed of 60% recyclable materials, to use 0 watts during standby mode, and to have a ECO Restart function that saves games, turns off the console, and can resum...

Sony Refers to PlayStation Network Downtime as a "Great Experience"

Devouring a well prepared meal at a fancy restaurant can be a great experience. So can skydiving, overclocking, sitting in the front row of a sporting event, visiting the Grand Canyon, and the list goes on, perhaps endlessly. But would you classify being repeatedly hacked to the point where you have to shut down your gaming network a "great experience?" Sony's president of network entertainment Tim Schaaff did.
"Great experience, really good time," Shaaff told VentureBeat in a sit-down interview. "Though I wouldn't like to do it again."
The high-profile attack on Sony's PlayStation Network was just one in what turned out to be a string of security breaches perpetuated by LulzSec and Anonymou...

Sony expected to intro new eReaders next month

Filed in: Ebook ReadersSony

Sony is expected to introduce a new family of eReader devices to challenge the Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook devices next month. In an interview with Bloomberg, Sony Electronics’ vice president of digital reading Phil Lubell said that the new eReaders will offer both software and hardware enhancements, although he wasn’t specific on what exactly the changes are. Lubell said the devices will hit the market ahead of his company’s S1 and S2 Android tablets. AT&T announced yesterday that it would ship the dual-screen S2 to its customers in time for the back-to-school season, and Sony said its tablets will receive a software update later this year with support for the company’s eReader bo...

A few months ago, Sony announced that their VPL-HW30ES projector was going to be released in July. Unfortunately it looks like customers will have to wait as it was revealed that this projector was pushed back to August. The HW30ES features 1300 ANSI lumens, a 70000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. This device will be Sony’s latest 3D projector and will use the new active shutter technology. The connection panel will include two HDMI inputs as well as a component and an RGB port. Other major features include 2D-to-3D conversion technology, a Motionflow Dark Frame Insertion system, and a 22dB noise level. When the HW30ES releases in August the projector will retail for ...

Sony eyes electric car future, wants to soon sell you Li-ion batteries

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

Sony must be smelling dolla dolla bills in the EV-charged streets because the company just announced its intentions to fab lithium-ion batteries for the cars mid-decade. The statement, made from its plant in Motomiya, hinges on a future market flush with consumer demand for the earth-friendly autos, and could see the construction of several dedicated factories. Given the Japanese company's recent history eating bits of competitor dust (hello Wii and iPod), we understand its forward-facing desire to become king of this Li-ion hill. But the mega-electronics maker isn't placing all of its batteries in one fuel-source just yet -- it's "also [considering] developing batteries for gasoline-electri...

Sony 3D Experience brings free on-demand movie trailers, sports clips to Bravia TVs

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

HDTV manufacturers have used a variety of tactics to attract customers to the 3D segment, bundling free glasses, discounting Blu-ray players, and nearly eliminating unsightly bezels, but with content selection still incredibly limited, there's been little incentive for consumers to shell out extra cash for a 3D set. Sony's new 3D Experience sets out to expand those content offerings, streaming on-demand sports highlights and select movie trailers to Bravia LCD TVs, and eventually Blu-ray players and home theater systems. The Experience launches with just 30 clips in the US, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK today, but will eventually grow to include more movie, music, sports, and documenta...
