New PSN lawsuit claims Sony layoffs to blame for hacks

A second lawsuit over PSN hacks this week has accused Sony of cutting jobs whose absence may have worsened or contributed to the hack. A "substantial percentage" of Sony Online Entertainment, including some in the network operations center, were let go just two weeks before the April 19 incident that hit both SOE and PSN. Sony lowered its safeguards through job cuts just as the attacks came in, the lawsuit alleged.
An anonymous witness who worked for SCEA between 2006 and 2008, as well as SOE for almost half of 2010, claimed that Sony had a disproportionate stance on security. It took great care to protect the DevNetwork for companies building PlayStation games but didn't show nearly as much...

Pentax, Sony, Leica and Ricoh update firmware

Pentax, Sony, Leica and Ricoh have released firmware updates for several of their cameras. Pentax has updated the firmware for its K-r, K-5 and 645D. Firmware v1.01 for all three cameras brings compatibility with the recently-announced 0-GPS module. Sony, meanwhile, has created updates for its NEX-3 and NEX-5, and SLT A33 and A55 models, adding many of the features of its forthcoming NEX-C3 and SLT A35 cameras. Leica has updated the firmware for its M9 digital rangefinder to improve color consistency across the frame when used with wide-angle lenses. Finally, Ricoh has updated its G700 and G700SE rugged industrial cameras. Click here for links to the updates.

With all the hacking of government Web sites and smaller gaming companies, it seemed like people had almost forgotten about Sony. Not so fast. Two hackers on Sunday said they had successfully targeted the Web site for Sony Pictures in France.
A Lebanese hacker known as Idahc and a French hacker known as Auth3ntiq took responsibility for the attack via a note on Pastebin.
"We found a sql injection on sonypictures.fr," Idahc wrote. "But we will not publish all the database and we didn't upload a shell (because the load_file wasn't disable)."

Sony is on the verge of releasing a new model of PlayStation 3, which offers lower power, less weight and a few minor external changes.
Although originally just a rumour from a retailer claiming to have been briefed on the new console, the CECH-3000B PS3 model has since surfaced on Sony's Japanese PlayStation site, with release date listed as from June 2011.

Netflix addressed the concerns of confused customers today announcing that all Sony content acquired through the Starz Play deal was no longer available. Among the pulled movies are The Social network, Salt, and The other Guys. Netflix called the situation a “temporary contract issue”, but it might be a sticky issue for Starz.
