Styluses at the ready for the Sony Reader PRS-T1

Styluses at the ready for the Sony Reader PRS-T1

Posted on Aug 30, 2011 by MG1

It is not only Sony tablets that we're expecting to crash land at IFA. Well, now it isn't at least - as the follow-up to the Sony Reader PRS-650 has been leaked online, the equally congruous Sony Reader PRS-T1.
The T1 improves upon the original by adding Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, 2GB of on-board storage and multitouch support.
There is also a stylus option for note-taking on the 6-inch E-Ink Pearl display and you can do a bit of surfing too - Google and Wikipedia are on board, along with 12 built-in dictionaries.
Weighing in at just 168g, the T1 is a much more slimline option than the 650 as well.
Nothing official from Sony yet, the T1 was leaked by a Dutch e-retailer. But with IFA around the c...

Sony PRS-T1 e-reader spotted on Dutch retail site for 165 euros

Sony PRS-T1 e-reader spotted on Dutch retail site for 165 euros

Posted on Aug 29, 2011 by MG15

It's nigh on a month since we caught the WiFi-toting Sony PRS-T1 flitting its way through the FCC. Now the unannounced e-reader has popped up again -- this time on a Dutch seller's webpage with some pics, specs and a price of €165 (or $240 after a straight currency conversion). If accurate, most of the new features merit a nod rather than a yelp: a six-inch 800x600 e-ink screen that allows dual-touch gestures like pinch-to-zoom; a plastic body that brings the weight down to 168g (six ounces, versus the 7.6-ounce PRS-650); plus, the inclusion of Wikipedia and Google search. Speaking of which, don't those look rather like Android buttons? Could it be that Sony is founding its latest Reader upo...

Sony website uses augmented reality to test TVs in rooms

Sony website uses augmented reality to test TVs in rooms

Sony UK is offering an online tool that helps perspective TV buyers visualize how a screen would look in their own house. The TV Size Guide is a web-based app that will create images of different size TVs superimposed over a rendering of a wall of their apartment or house. The would-be buyer can then compare different sizes and then get detailed information on the best fit.

Using the tool is straightforward. The user first downloads and prints out a "marker". The marker is then placed either on a wall or on top of a piece of furniture where the TV will go. The user then snaps a picture of the marker in position and uploads it to Sony's special site. The app then creates an image of a TV in ...

Sony plans full-frame Alpha camera

Sony plans full-frame Alpha camera

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: CamerasSony

Sony has confirmed that it still intends to offer a full-frame camera in its Alpha cameras. The company tipped its hand to the BJP at a recent news conference in Athens when it unveiled the crop-frame, translucent mirror Alpha A65 and A77. The company declined to provide any further details.

Sony currently uses cropped, APS-C sensors in all its Alpha series cameras. A full-frame camera would incorporate a sensor that captured images in the same approximate size format as a 35mm film camera. They usually allow more light and provide the true zoom range of a lens instead of skewing it, as with the smaller sensors on most other cameras.

Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment

Sony Vaio Z gets the in-house teardown treatment

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Another official teardown, another predictable revelation: the new Sony Vaio Z's viscera are thinner, flatter and, er, more compressed than those of its predecessor. But at least this dissection is performed by an actual Vaio engineer who ought to know his stuff. In the video after the break, Shinji Oguchi explains how cooling was improved using a range of tricks, like aerating the laptop's guts via holes in the keyboard. He also splits open the innovative external media dock, which connects via Intel's Light Peak technology and uses a discrete GPU to give the Vaio Z some gaming oomph. Finally, there's a separate, speeded-up video of Shinji putting the whole thing back together again from me...

Adobe Lightroom 3.5 will support Olympus, Panasonic and Sony RAW formats

Adobe Lightroom 3.5 will support Olympus, Panasonic and Sony RAW formats

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Possessing a camera with RAW output is great, but working with those data-rich files often isn't -- not least because most manufacturers use proprietary file formats. However, Lightroom fans who update to version 3.5 (currently at release candidate stage) should discover that it effortlessly handles RAW images from a bunch of recent cameras including the Olympus E-P3 and E-PL3, Panasonic G3 and GF3, and the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 The update will also fix a number of bugs, such as inconsistent processing times and a loss of geo-tagging metadata when converting to Adobe's Digital Negative format. Time to get those psychedelic HDR images flowing.
