Google Apps Users Promised Google+ Access Someday

Google Apps Users Promised Google+ Access Someday

Filed in: Google

It is nothing new for users of Google Apps. A cool new Google service comes out, but they can’t access it. These dedicated users have been clamoring for access to Google+ (like half of the Internet seems to be), but Apps access to the social network is not happening. According to Google’s president of enterprise, they’re working on it, though.
Google tends to roll out new features and service to paid Google Apps users slowly. Part of the deal, and what users expect, is that Apps will have a certain uptime and reliability guarantee. So Google often delays beta products for Apps. But in the case of Google+, they may be adopting an accelerated timetable for the rollout.
We know that Google is ...

Google to keep Blogger brand after all

Google to keep Blogger brand after all

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Last week there was talk that Google would soon be retiring several non-Google name brands, such as Blogger and Picasa, sometime next month. The replacements would include Google Blogs and Google Photos, respectively. The search giant reportedly wants to keep the Blogger brand after all, a source familiar with Google's Blogger division told GigaOM.
If we had to pick between the two, Picasa makes more sense to rebrand. Blogger, which Google acquired in February 2003 and is one of the top 10 most visited websites in the world, is perhaps one of the strongest brands on the Internet. It's not clear if Google Blogs could match Blogger's level of recognition.

Google’s chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt has agreed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee, Reuters reported on Monday. On June 24th, Google announced that the Federal Trade Commission would be reviewing its business practices. The search giant said it was “still unclear” as to what the FTC’s concerns were but that it would cooperate fully with the investigation. Watchdog groups such as Fairsearch.org have repeatedly accused Google of eangaging in anti-competitive behavior. “I look forward to discussing a number of important issues relating to Google and Internet search competition,” Senator Mike Lee, the lead Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s an...

Native screencaps coming to CyanogenMod 7.1

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

Taking screenshots on Android devices is by and large a sore spot for pretty much anyone whose needed to perform the deed. Unless your phone is one of the few that supports the functionality, you must first root your handset and install third-party software -- or grab the Android SDK and access your device in USB-debugging mode from ddms. Regardless of how you get there, neither option is ideal. Now, the creators of CyanogenMod think they can do better. While rooting your phone is still a prerequisite, the operating system will bring native support for screen captures via a long-press on the power button. You can expect to receive this delightful new feature in the upcoming CyanogenMod 7.1, ...

Google has announced a new partnership with hardware manufacturer iRiver for the first e-reader that is integrated with the Google Books platform. The Story HD looks strikingly similar to the original Amazon Kindle, but it has the ability to purchase and read Google Books over a Wi-Fi connection.
With the Story HD, you can access Google's library of 3 million free ebooks and hundreds of thousands that are for sale. UK Samsung Galaxy Tab to get Gingerbread in matter of weeks

Posted on Jul 12, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sprint may have just received its update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but there are many Tabs across the world that have yet to see the update. It looks like users in the UK will be able to enjoy the benefits of Gingerbread in only a few weeks if new information from Samsung is to be believed.
According to information obtained from a Samsung rep by Recombu, Galaxy Tabs in the UK that are not tied to a specific carrier will be able to update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread "within the next few weeks." It will require users to update through Samsung's KIES desktop software. As far as those Galaxy Tabs that are tied to networks, only O2 revealed any information, and it hope....

HTC Desire Gingerbread action coming in July

HTC Desire Gingerbread action coming in July

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

The will it, won't it saga seems close to an end now with HTC stating that the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Desire "will begin rolling out...by the end of July".
The statement was made on the UK HTC Facebook page - the same place the company stated back in June that the device wouldn't be getting the update as "there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire".
HTC, just a day later, backtracked though saying: "Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire" and admitting that "to resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread" it would be ditching some apps.

HTC claims Desire will get Gingerbread by the end of July

HTC claims Desire will get Gingerbread by the end of July

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Android OS upgrades are the most fickle of all things, even when you are told over and over that it will be coming soon, soon never seems to arrive. At this point T-Mobile G2X users may never see their update even though they have another reason to believe, because they've been hearing that it is "coming soon" or coming "in less than a month" since the phone was released back in April. HTC, however, has been better about upgrades than many manufacturers, and they are claiming now that HTC Desire users will be getting Gingerbread by the end of the month.
At first, Desire users were told not to even expect Gingerbread, then a day later, they recanted and said Gingerbread would be coming to th...

Firefox 6 Beta lands in the Android Market

Firefox 6 Beta lands in the Android Market

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Firefox for Android has been a fairly slow roll. The app first launched in pre-Alpha form back in May of 2010, and at the time it was enormous, bloated, slow and buggy, as one might expect from something pre-Alpha. Today, Firefox 6 Beta landed in the Android Market, and it feels impressive.
Firefox hasn't slimmed down, but it has had the move to SD option for a few versions now. The big difference these days is in boot time. Firefox has always been slow to cold start on Android, but it's finally feeling like the devs are making headway in getting the browser to launch faster. But, the new Beta isn't just faster, they've also increased the image scaling quality in an effort to reduce pixelat...

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Gameloft UK is running a neat promotion, offering three of its “Android HD+” titles for free over this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We don’t know which games they will give away, or exact moment when you will be able to download them. However, we do know they’ll make one game free every day for a period of two hours. In order to get the free game, you’ll have to follow Gameloft on Twitter and Facebook to get the news when the two hour period begins. Not exactly labor free, but free enough. Your only “job” is to keep your eye on the two social media accounts and act appropriately. Then on Monday, you’re free to unfollow them and get back to your normal e-social life.

Microsoft could make as much from Android as Google, if it signs licensing deals with all manufacturers

Microsoft could make as much from Android as Google, if it signs licensing deals with all manufacturers

Posted on Jul 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftGoogle

Microsoft is currently wrangling with Android cell phone makers to pay up licensing fees for publicly unknown features or components of Google's mobile OS, for which it probably has filed patents since the dawn of WinMo. Its most popular licensee is HTC, which coughs up $5 per device to Microsoft, and it also signed up Velocity Micro and General Dynamics for the noble cause of padding its bottomline.
The big win, however, will come with Samsung, which might end up paying even more, and, considering it is the world's second largest cell phone manufacturer, this should result in a good chunk of money for Microsoft. Currently Redmond is haggling with Samsung over the terms of the licensing deal...

Users can now sort their documents by name or the last time they were opened or modified. The sort can be narrowed down even further by selecting a subset. It is now easy to share multiple documents right from your mobile browser, as you can send docs to other users via links, email, or Google Docs' built-in sharing tool, just like on the desktop.
