Things are a little different at the Apple Store in Hong Kong. While we might expect to see long lines at most of the other Apple Stores around the world and some jockeying for position as the new iPad is sold on a first-come, first-served basis, signs posted outside the Apple Store in Hong Kong specifically prohibit certain activities. In English, the signs say "No Staying or Queuing up here. Apple will not serve on a first come first served basis for new iPad. Please refer to Apple's official website for the detailed arrangement". Without an Apple on the post, it seems that it is the Hong Kong Police who posted the signs. The new Apple iPad launches this Friday, March 16th at many location...

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new 15-inch MacBook Air notebook PC in April. The report from Electricpig cites a “premium Mac accessory maker,” who claims a new 15-inch model will feature ports on both sides, with no optical drive or Ethernet port. A 15-inch Air model has been rumored before — DigiTimes previously reported that a 15-inch model was slated to launch in the first quarter of 2012 alongside a new 11-inch and 13-inch model. The Taiwanese publication, however, has also reported that an ultra-thin 15-inch MacBook with Air-like features would launch in the second quarter this year.

Apple gets a lot of love for creating gorgeous looking devices and drop dead simple software, but it’s companies like Samsung, LG, and TSMC who we should lavishing with attention. They invest in hard research and development, the type of stuff that’s needed to come out with ultra high resolution displays, faster processers, solid state storage, and everything else that makes up modern smartphones and tablets. According to a report from The Korea Times, Apple is set to order $11 billion worth of parts from Samsung over the course of 2012. The new iPad is landing Friday, March 16, and Apple has just confirmed that you’ll be able to pick up the new tablet bright and early. The new iPad will go on sale at 8 a.m. this Friday.
Apple has said that the demand for the new iPad is “off the charts,” so if you want to pick one up early on March 16, it looks like you may have to wait in a long line. I’m not a fan of waiting overnight for any products but I’m sure there will be Apple stores across the world with people waiting overnight to get their hands on its latest tablet.

iTunes movies in 1080p: less than or equal to Blu-ray image quality?

iTunes movies in 1080p: less than or equal to Blu-ray image quality?

Blu-ray's been atop the home entertainment mountain, with only fleeting competition from HD-DVDs, ever since its introduction. Since then, home internet connections have gotten faster and the quality of downloadable content has improved such that iTunes can offer 1080p versions of your favorite movies. But, does iTunes really provide the crystal clear quality we're accustomed to seeing from its disc-based competition? The good folks at Ars Technica decided to find out using the film 30 Days of Night, and results were mixed: text and color reproduction were virtually indistinguishable, but the compressed iTunes version showed warts when dealing with bright spots and dark gradients.

The TV industry is changing and it looks like TV manufacturers could lose the battle. In recent years the internet has provided a whole new way to provide content to people. While TVs have tried their hardest to provide internet access to their consumers, to many it just doesn’t seem worth the purchase. Instead they are turning to their computers, tablets, and even their smartphones and watching content through them instead of watching it on a huge 46 inch screen. One of the main reasons why the TV lags behind with providing internet content is to the lack of content available to them. Last year, Google tried to provide a platform that gave TVs the same unlimited internet access that any com...

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission subpoenaed Apple as part of the government’s antitrust investigation into Google says a Bloomberg report. The government agency is interested in the deal that made Google the primary search engine on the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. The FTC has asked Apple for the documents surrounding this agreement.
Google’s competitors, such as Microsoft, claim the search giant is is unfairly using its position as the number one search engine to increase its mobile phone advertising revenue. According to a report from Macquarie Capital, Google’s mobile search-related revenue climbed to $1.3 billion. Of that sum, Google kept $335 million and gave Apple $1 billion. Ano...

Apple WALT prototype shows up on eBay

Apple WALT prototype shows up on eBay

It's not uncommon to come across gadgets on eBay that never made it to market, but this is certainly a unique find. Seller russel400 has posted a prototype of Apple's unreleased WALT, or Wizzy Active Lifestyle Telephone. Introduced in 1993, right around the same time as the Newton came out, WALT was to be a companion for a home phone. Like the Newton, it had a touchscreen, stylus, and handwriting recognition. However, that's where the similarities ended. WALT was apparently designed closely with BellSouth, and offered an integrated address book, caller ID, custom ringtones, fax services, and even access to online banking. It also ran a stripped down version of System 6 with a HyperCard GUI r...

Apple's most popular products owe much of their success to their design, and by extension, to their designer, Jony Ive. In a new interview with the London Evening Standard, Ive dished about his secret sauce—and where his competitors are falling short.
Ive is the aesthetic brain behind groundbreaking Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad. These products were new, yes, but Ive says that's not what makes them important. Newness is necessary, but insufficient. That, says Ive, is what distinguishes the design process at Apple from the rest:

Apple drops a patent and some claims against Samsung in ITC suit

Earlier today, we told you about Apple's claim in federal court that Samsung had not entirely complied with the ruling of a judge. But there is more Apple-Samsung action to report, this time involving the former's suit filed with the ITC. Last week, the ITC gave Apple a favorable ruling on the claim construction involving the Cupertino based firm's interpretation of two patents while ruling with Samsung on its claim construction on a third patent.
The claim construction rulings determine if the judge agrees with either side about certain terms used in each parties claims and can often decide who will win a patent infringement case. The patent involved in the claim construction that Samsung w...

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

iOS 5.1 increases OTA download limit to 50 MB

Posted on Mar 13, 2012 by MG1

While the new features found in the iOS 5.1 update were fairly minimal, one that snuck under the radar was an increase to the maximum download file size over 3G/4G networks. The new version of iOS allows downloads of up to 50 MBs to be conducted over cellular networks, a fairly sizable increase from the previous 20MB limit.
Accounting for the increase is Apple’s new iPad, which is slated to launch on Friday. The new iPad features an HD Retina display, which will drive application file sizes up as developers build more intensive programs to support the new display and the Retina graphics the devices are capable of providing. Users of the AT&T, Verizon, and upcoming Sprint variants of the iPad...

Are we still judging Apple by Steve Jobs?

Are we still judging Apple by Steve Jobs?

As we've mentioned a number of times now, often in defense of Google, companies have personalities, insofar as companies reflect the personality of their CEOs. We have mentioned this in order to squash silly rumors that Google is out to steal your private data, or is planning to implode the Android ecosystem by closing it off and making its own devices with Motorola. This time though, we have to take a moment to consider how this philosophy affects Apple. Apple is known as Steve Jobs' company, and essentially an extension of the man himself. The trouble is that Steve is no longer the CEO; Tim Cook is.

Apple forced to cut profit margins with new iPad, analyst says

Posted on Mar 12, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

In an effort to keep the iPad’s price the same, Apple may have had to cut profit margins compared to previous models, The Wall Street Journal reported. UBM TechInsights on Thursday estimated the company’s newest iPad cost about $310 to manufacture the 16GB, 4G LTE model, which retails for $629. Based on those estimates, Apple’s gross profit margin is 51%, 5 points less than the iPad 2′s 56% margin at the tablet’s launch. The cost increase is largely due to the new iPad’s Retina display, which UBM estimates to cost Apple about $70 compared to the $49.50 display found on the iPad 2. The 4G LTE chips also add $21 compared to $10 for 3G chips, and the A5X processor chip is estimated to costs $28...
