Apple now worth over $500 billion, soon to become wealthiest company ever
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Just two short weeks ago, a big hullabaloo was made when Apple’s stock hit the illustrious $500 per share mark. As of 1:00 PM CST today, Apple is sitting right around $544 per share, sending the Cupertino company’s net worth north of $500 Billion dollars for the first time in its history. This from a company that was worth just $10 Billion a decade ago. Apple, already the most valuable company in the world, joins an elite club of companies who’ve been worth $500 Billion. Only Microsoft, ExxonMobil, Cisco, and General Electric are in the club, none of which are currently valued above $500 Billion. Of these five, ExxonMobile has the highest current net worth of $410 Billion.

Apple at work on 'adaptive streaming' audio format
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple is at work on a new file format that should enable "adaptive steaming" of high- or low-quality audio to iCloud users, The Guardian claims. The format will allegedly adjust itself to the bandwidth and storage on a given device, and it's speculated that it could allow downloading "HD" audio to iOS devices, or else form the backbone of a long-rumored streaming music service. More firm, though, is thought to be integration with iTunes Match, the combination upload and streaming service launched late last year.
A Guardian source with "inside knowledge of the process" states that Apple has asked a London studio to prepare audio files for the new format. "All of a sudden, all your audio from ...

Apple announced a new program today called Developer ID that will allow third-party developers to distribute apps outside of the Mac App Store, while keeping things safe for consumers. The move comes after Apple introduced a new Gatekeeper feature in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, which only allows users to install apps from the Mac App Store in order to safeguard against malicious software.

The rumor mill is swirling that Apple is getting ready to introduce its next gen tablet next week, which would possibly explain why retailers are clearing their store shelves to make room. Best Buy is offering $50.00 off of all iPad 2 models.

Apple working on both the A5X and A6 at the same time
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple’s going to come out with two new devices this year that will make huge waves in the mobile industry. One of them is the third generation iPad, the other is the sixth generation iPhone. Traditionally whatever chip Apple put inside the iPad would eventually end up in the iPhone. Case in point, the A5 made its debut in the iPad 2. Several months later we found it inside the iPhone 4S. Will the same thing happen this year? It’s too early to tell, but more importantly there are conflicting rumors flying around the internet. Some folks say that the iPad 3 will have a quad core processor called the A6. Others say that no, the iPad 3 will come with a chip called the A5X, which has the same amo...

Imminent iPad 3 launch prompts iPad 2 sale at Best Buy
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 2iPad 3
Apple is all but confirmed to be planning a press conference for March 7th during which it will unveil its next-generation iPad tablet. The iPad 3 is expected to feature a high-definition 2,048 x 1,536-pixel Retina Display along with a faster quad-core Apple A6 processor, embedded 4G LTE, an upgraded rear camera and a redesigned case. There is no question that the new iPad will be a significant upgrade compared to the current model, but not everyone needs the latest and greatest. For those willing to forgo the added speed, embedded LTE and HD display, Best Buy is now offering $50 off every iPad 2 model it carries. Of course buying the iPad 2 now at a $50 discount is a risky move — a number o...

Apple scores a victory over Motorola in German patent case
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleMotorola
Apple on Monday won a ruling over Motorola Mobility in a German appeals court over a recent patent infringement suit, reports Bloomberg. The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court ruled in Apple’s favor, stating that Motorola cannot further enforce its standard-essential patent injunction against the Cupertino-based company. The ruling allows Apple to continue to offer its products in its online store while it appeals a ruling that temporarily banned the company’s iPhone and iPad. “At the current state of the proceedings, it is to be assumed that Motorola Mobility would violate its duties under antitrust rules if it continues to ask Apple to stop the sales,” the court said in a statement.

Apple has too much cash admits Tim Cook
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
If Apple were a cartoon character, it would definitely be Scrooge McDuck. I have a mental image of Apple CEO Tim Cook and other Cupertino bigwigs diving into a company pool filled with cash. Consider that $1 billion in $100 bills would weigh approximately 22,000 pounds assuming each bill weighs 1 g according to Dailykos. If you multiply that by 98 it gets us roughly 2,156,000 pounds for the $98 billion in cash Apple has sitting in the bank. I’d say that’s plenty cash to fill a swimming pool Scrooge style.

Google will jump into the tablet market this year with its own 7-inch device, according to a DisplaySearch analyst.
The tablet market has experienced rapid growth over the past couple of years thanks to devices such as the iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Kindle Fire and it looks as though Google wants in on that cake, with its Ice Cream Sandwich operating system providing it with a good starting point.
Speaking to Cnet, analyst Richard Shim suggested that a self-branded, 7-inch (1280x800) Google tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich would start production in April.

Motorola Fight Forces Apple to Disable iCloud Push Email in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
Motorola is now enforcing an injunction against Apple's iCloud push email notifications in Germany, meaning the service has been shut down for users in the region.
As Apple noted on its German support forums, push email for iCloud (and MobileMe) will not work within the borders of Germany thanks to a patent battle with Motorola. Apple, however, posted a workaround to have new emails automatically download in the background.
"Apple holds the patent to be invalid and [plans] to submit an appeal," Apple said in a translated statement.

Mozilla teams up with LG for a mysterious device, aims to rival Apple and Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: LGAppleGoogle
Mozilla has teamed up with none other than LG for the release of its first mobile device at MWC 2012, a “source close to the matter” confirmed for ExtremeTech. What’s more - Mozilla CTO and creator of JavaScript Brendan Eich said there will be multiple partners, not just one partnership announced at the show.
The Mozilla-LG phone is expected to be powered by Mozilla’s brand new Boot to Gecko (B2G) operating system, which should strengthen Firefox’s position in the battle of browsers. The actual device will be aimed at developers, not the mass user initially.
There are no further details about specs or price of the upcoming device, but it’s allegedly possible for it to go on sale as soon as ...

Apple releases new iCloud ad; shows everything but the kitchen sync
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A new Apple commercial for iCloud shows how easily and quickly things you do on your Apple iPhone 4S show up elsewhere in the Apple ecosystem with the technology. Features like email and Find my iPhone features are now covered under iCloud and are free. But that isn't even the focus of the ad. The spot shows how you can add an app to your handset and have it pop up on the Apple iPad. Photos, music and video can sync back and forth from your phone to your Mac or PC without a cable. As of last month, Apple had 85 million iCloud users.
Right now, Apple offers 5GB of storage for free and additional storage can be purchased in lots of 10GB, 20GB or 50GB for $20, $40 and $100 a year respectively. ...

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Pudong District People's Court said in a statement that it has rejected Proview's request for a temporary injunction that would have suspended iPad sales in Shanghai. It also approved Apple's request to halt proceedings until another court in the southern province of Guangdong decides on a related appeal case.

For audiophiles and music fans alike, Apple just slid something under the door when no one was looking. In addition, there's a new PDF buried in Apple's knowledge base that details mastering practices for iTunes Plus, as Ars Technica first reported. Mastered for iTunes is an attempt to aid mixing and mastering engineers in creating the best-sounding tracks possible when converted to the lossy 256Kbps audio format commonly used in the iTunes Store.
