Apple quietly rolls out revised iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM iPhone 4

Apple quietly rolls out revised iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM iPhone 4

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Apple updated iOS to 5.1.1 earlier this month with several minor feature additions, but the build for the GSM iPhone 4 may have needed some additional work: the company has begun distributing a new version of the upgrade. The Next Web reports that iPhone hacker iH8sn0w posted about the update on Twitter; the new version uses build number 9B208 instead of the 9B206 used in the prior version. It's not clear just what the update provides, though the timing is certainly interesting, with today's release of Absinthe providing untethered jailbreaks for all iOS devices on 5.1.1, including the new iPad. GSM iPhone 4 users that have already upgraded to 5.1.1 won't be able to receive the update over t...

As technology moves forward, our gadgets keep getting thinner. 12mm, 10mm, 8mm, 7mm… and now we have a phone that’s just 6.65mm thin, which gives it the title of the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” It’s not anything from Apple, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, or any vendor you might expect. It’s from Chinese mobile phone brand Oppo.

HTC EVO 4G LTE gives it up, gets rooted on its first day on the town (video)

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

It's a rite of passage for newly released Android überphones: the inevitable root. Just one day after Sprint managed to get its flagship device out of customs and into subscribers' hands, comes a one-click solution for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X users. By running a simple script compiled by XDA member Zedomax, EVO 4G LTE owners will be able to install both busybox and superuser hassle-free, giving them the admin privileges required for nearly unrestricted tinkering. Bear in mind, this underground workaround won't unlock that HTC bootloader, so a future filled with custom ROMs is still slightly out of reach. Ready to claim mastery of your device? Then click on the source below for the requis...

Sony Xperia Play Android 4 update canceled, gaming to blame

Sony Xperia Play Android 4 update canceled, gaming to blame

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG2

Sony Mobile on Friday confirmed that it no longer plans to update its Xperia Play smartphone to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich due to compatibility issues with the device’s gaming features, Phone Scoop reported. “Ice Cream Sandwich demands more from the phone hardware than Gingerbread,” a Sony spokesperson said. “Android 4.0 is a more powerful OS and thus, more resource intensive – applications require more RAM, CPU power, and network bandwidth. From internal testing and feedback from the developer community on the beta ROM software release, we have seen a significant decline in user experience when running high performance games, as they are more demanding on the hardware. As gaming content...

While we're no champions at "pin the tail on the donkey" we're pretty sure we're close to the mark with this one. An FCC report for a new Samsung phone bearing an SGH-I747 model number? Sporting HSPA+ and LTE bands that play nice with AT&T, Rogers, Telus and Bell? While it's not explicit, if this doesn't sound like the GSIII coming to town, we don't know what does. After all, it's not like we didn't know it was on its way.

Developed by the Chronic-Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team, the Absinthe 2.0 tool will jailbreak most iOS devices, including the Apple iPhone 4S, new Apple iPad, and the latest generation iPod touch.. Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Xperia Play Ice Cream Sandwich update canned?

Posted on May 28, 2012 by MG3

Blimey. After a concerted effort to right its wrongs has had us retracting our previously harsh words about Sony and its Android updates, things are all starting to unravel once again. A bagful of Sony Ericsson handsets are still destined for an Android 4.0 upgrade, but has the Xperia Play just fallen off the wagon?
The Sony Mobile website’s list of upcoming Ice Cream Sandwich updates is missing one key player. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems to have slipped off the list, which still includes the likes of the Xperia Pro, Xperia Arc and Xperia Ray.
