Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Nokia 808 PureView enables NFC image share, mobile payment apps to come

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Rounding off a busy day of shooting with Nokia's new imaging mistress, the company's Vesa Jutila, Head of Symbian Product Marketing, hooked us up with some more developments for the 808 PureView, specifically to do with NFC. He told us that picture sharing would be possible across devices -- not limiting itself to fellow PureView smartphones, and differentiating it from another hotly anticipated future smartphone. We'd err against using it on those full 38- or 34-megapixel images though, as they will often measure over 10MB and it could take some time. Further, Nokia's already applied for Mastercard and Visa accreditation to get those mobile wallets up and working. We're curating our own exc...

When 720p displays are no longer deemed as unique, we sometimes forget that the LG Nitro HD was actually the first AT&T smartphone to offer one – then again, it’s still sporting Gingerbread. So yeah, some people have probably tried looking at other things to quench their thirst for the latest and greatest Android build.

Two versions of the Apple iPhone being tested says report, both with 3.999 inch screen

According to 9to5Mac, at Apple HQ, testing is taking place on a couple of prototype handsets, one of which will probably become the next Apple iPhone 5. The prototypes are disguised by being put in thick black shells which are designed to hide the true identity of the phone inside. Two of the models being tested have larger screens than the current 3.5 inches that used to be considered generously sized when the first Apple iPhone was launched in 2007. Since then, we have seen the envelope widen from the 4.3 inches that seemed so large on the HTC HD2 to the 5.3 inches on the Samsung GALAXY Note. The two Apple iPhone prototypes with the larger screen are internally called the iPhone 5,1 and th...

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 redesigned; adds quad-core CPU, S-Pen slot

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 redesigned; adds quad-core CPU, S-Pen slot

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Cell PhonesSamsung

As previously reported, after a less than stellar unveiling at Mobile World Congress in February, Samsung delayed the launch of its Galaxy Note 10.1 in order to make revisions. The original Galaxy Note 10.1 featured a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800-pixel display, a dual-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 1GB of RAM and a 3-megapixel rear camera. The slate utilized Samsung’s S-Pen stylus, however unlike its “phablet” counterpart, the device lacked a slot to store the nifty stylus. Samsung has addressed the issue in the redesigned version of its upcoming tablet, and the company added a new quad-core Exynos processor as well, according to Tablet Community. Unfortunately, the South Korea vendor has ...

Samsung Galaxy S III tops UK pre-order records, shows that British love their quad-core

Samsung Galaxy S III tops UK pre-order records, shows that British love their quad-core

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

The British clearly didn't waste any time once pre-orders opened up for the Galaxy S III, which just broke through pre-order records for at least one carrier and one retailer in the country. Carphone Warehouse's chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton says that the quad-core, 4.8-inch flagship is the quickest-moving pre-order of the year "so far," while Vodafone UK adds that the new Galaxy is its most pre-ordered Android device to date. Without hard numbers, though, it's difficult not to couch the successes in relative terms: both are using conditional language that makes clear neither record is absolute and that they might be eclipsed by companies with a knack for building early demand. E...

Samsung spills Galaxy Note's ICS guts, releases kernel source code to devs

Back when it was unveiled at IFA 2011, Sammy's famed phablet was more of an attractive oddity than sure hit. Skip to now, and that 5.3-incher's not only taken the European continent by storm, it's also made inroads onto these American shores via AT&T. In keeping with the open source embrace begun last October, the OEM's once again offering up the device's kernel code, this time for the skinned ICS OS unlocked versions currently run. Devs and the amateur hackers that love them should make haste and hit up the source below to get cracking on this latest software nut.

The future for Nokia PureView: Possible slimmer models and 'not necessarily a 41MP sensor'

The future for Nokia PureView: Possible slimmer models and 'not necessarily a 41MP sensor'

Nokia's 808 PureView may not even be blasting retinas in stores just yet, but that doesn't mean those Finnish cameraphone obsessives aren't already cooking up a buffet of high-megapixel ideas for the future. Vesa Jutila, Head of Product Marketing for the incoming 808 PureView, said that there was plenty more high-spec digital imaging products in the pipeline. While he wasn't about to be drawn on specifics for any future Lumia-Pureview unions just yet, there were "multiple ways" that Nokia could run with its new imaging jewel. Slimmer models are a possibility, still containing high-end Zeiss optics and Nokia's oversampling techniques avoiding the need for optical zoom. He added that the next ...

LG LS860 leaked: a five-row QWERTY sliding smartphone with Sprint LTE?

LG LS860 leaked: a five-row QWERTY sliding smartphone with Sprint LTE?

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

BriefMobile's tipster has done it again, bringing us another leaked image of a rumored high-end LG smartphone. This time, however, the handset's claim to fame isn't a quad-core processor or a 13-megapixel camera: rather, the LG LS860 "Cayenne" allegedly has the neatly staggered five-row QWERTY keyboard, 4-inch IPS screen, and 1.2GHz dual-core processor it needs to be a competent Droid 4 competitor. While we wouldn't dream of suggesting that the supposed Sprint LTE smartphone might succeed without even seeing the device in the flesh, we sure hope BriefMobile is right that the slider will come with Android 4.0 right from the beginning. After all, Motorola's Droid 4 won't see an Ice Cream Sandw...

Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE pre-orders begin shipping to eager subs

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

True to its word, Sprint's begun to issue shipping notifications for pre-orders of its beleaguered flagship, the EVO 4G LTE. Word of the impending device arrivals continue to flood our inbox, lending credence to that ambiguous "on or around" May 24th arrival date, no doubt restoring the faith of wary subs. Whether the Hesse-led co. can fulfill backorders of the sought-after Android handset is anyone, but customs' guess. So be it by blood pact, money under the table or the good graces of legal counsel, we're sure all parties involved are working frantically behind-the-scenes to make this handset's roll out an uninterrupted success.
