LG unveiled a new logo for its Optimus smartphones (and tablets), designed to “accentuate the metallic edges and slim shape of the 2012 smartphone line-up.” Moreover, the logo is said to “embody modern and seamless simplicity,” which is apparently the core for LG’s design philosophy for mobile devices.
And the new logo is just a start – the Korean company is also preparing to launch “superior smartphones” that “bring design prestige” to users seeking aesthetic beauty on technological devices.

Samsung Galaxy S III resolution may have been leaked

Samsung Galaxy S III resolution may have been leaked

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

A leaked User Agent Profile (UAProf) is one of the least reliable sources of accurate information about an upcoming mobile device. For example, the leaked UAProf for the Galaxy Nexus claimed that it had a WVGA (480x800) screen, which was obviously quite untrue. That said, the new UAProf leak for the Samsung Galaxy S III looks a bit more realistic, although not 100% believable.
The leaked document lists the screen resolution of the Galaxy S III as 1024x600. On first glance, that seems like a resolution high enough to be real, and the 16:9 aspect ratio is very interesting as well. A true 16:9 ratio on the screen would likely make for a slightly more elongated form factor than what we normally...

Quad-core Motorola ATRIX 3 revealed with 3300mAh battery (Rumour)

Quad-core Motorola ATRIX 3 revealed with 3300mAh battery (Rumour)

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG15

This one could go either way, but I’m inclined to believe it based on Motorola’s history. A shot of a device has leaked that purports to be the ATRIX 3, complete with a 4.3-inch 720p screen, quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 2GB RAM and a whopping 3300mAh battery. Also note that the device in question does not have any capacitive buttons up front, which jibes with the previous render of Motorola’s Medfield-powered handset. And, since it’s about to be purchased by Google, it would make sense that future handsets would eschew those buttons for the Google-endorsed on-screen variety. Apparently the camera has received a bump to 10MP with dual LED flashes, but we can’t see around back to confirm. The ...

HTC releases bootloader unlocking tool for its legacy phones

HTC releases bootloader unlocking tool for its legacy phones

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesHTC

Last August, HTC said all its phones going forward would be released with an unlocked bootloader. It also promised to unlock bootloaders for some older models as well. We thought the Taiwanese company meant the Incredible 2 or other recent phones released in the last year or so. Leave it to HTC to surprise us all with a bootloader unlocking tool that works on phones as old as the HTC Hero.
A post on HTC’s Google+ account confirms that the HTC Hero, Legend, Droid Eris, myTouch 3G, and myTouch 4G are now supported by this utility. You can grab the unlocking tool and instructions from HTC’s dev site. Just select “Unlock Bootloader”, choose your phone and follow the directions. This unlock is ba...

Samsung Stratosphere getting BOGO'd at Verizon with new $99 contract price

Samsung Stratosphere getting BOGO'd at Verizon with new $99 contract price

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Remember the Samsung Stratosphere? The model was Verizon's first 4G LTE enabled model to pack a side-sliding physical QWERTY. Recently priced at $149.99 with a 2-year contract, the gang at Big Red have chopped $50 off the price of the phone to a more affordable $99.99 with that signed 2-year pact. And that is not all. The Samsung Stratosphere is now the subject of a BOGO promotion which means that you will receive two Stratospheres for the price of one.
See if this refreshes your memory. The Samsung Stratosphere is equipped with a 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 233. Under the hood is a single-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM aboard. 4GB of native memory is inclu...

European smartphone users can expect to have access to 4G wireless networks sometime in 2013. The European Parliament has approved the commencement of a 4G roll-out utilizing the 800MHz band that is currently used by certain broadcasters still using analogue prior to the finalization of a digital switchover due at the end of 2012. The 800MHz band has been identified as one of the more effective frequencies for 4G networks as it can send data over longer distances and offers better in door reception.
‘By this decision on radio spectrum policy we are taking the necessary steps in order to regain a European global leadership regarding mobile telecoms,’ reads a statement issued by the European P...

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Verizon's Droid Bionic drops to $99, loses bundled microSD card

Posted on Feb 17, 2012 by MG1

Last month, Verizon dropped the price on the Droid RAZR while removing the bundled 16GB microSD card and now it's doing the same thing with Motorola's Droid Bionic. The handset will be available for $99.99 on contract (down from $299.99 when we reviewed it in September) and features 16GB of internal storage, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a 4.3-inch qHD display. We liked the Droid Bionic, but Verizon subscribers might also want to take a look at the 8GB iPhone 4 and theSamsung Stratosphere (for the hardware keyboard people out there) at the same price point before taking the plunge.

Windows Phone Lumia 610 may be key to Tango update puzzle

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Before a big release of a new bit of software, especially in this mobile landscape we’re currently reporting on all the time now, there are a set of puzzle pieces, otherwise known as leaks, that can be compiled to create a relatively clear picture of what the full release will bring. What we’re seeing in the lead up to Mobile World Congress 2012 for Microsoft’s Windows Phone is a set of tips that lead us to believe that the key to the mystery that is “Windows Phone Tango” is none other than the Nokia Lumia 610, an unannounced device set for release at the end of this month, and the software that’ll come out first upon it: Tango.

Sony finalizes divorce with Ericsson, renames itself Sony Mobile Communications

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

More than half of America's married couples will tell you, breaking up is hard. Hard and expensive. After living in denial, dodging rumors and eventually coming to terms with the inevitable, Sony has finally taken over Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson's 50-percent stake in the pair's former joint venture, a move that was earlier reported to have cost €1.05 billion ($1.37 billion) to complete. The now fully Sony owned Sony Ericsson will be renamed Sony Mobile Communications, though a few of the outfit's already announced children are keeping their papa's name. Hit the break for Sony's small press release.

Malware threats targeting mobile devices doubled in 2011

Malware threats targeting mobile devices doubled in 2011

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

A new study claims that hackers have moved their attention away from PCs and web sites to new targets: mobile devices, smartphones and tablets. This intrusion of personal information moved to mobile devices because of the explosive growth these unique electronics have garnered in the past couple of years, according to a new report from Juniper Networks.
People are gravitating more and more to these handheld devices because these are becoming the daily driver for how folks conduct their business, including banking and shopping). In Juniper’s report, malware almost tripled with nearly 28,500 samples compared to 11,000 in 2010. That’s a huge spike in attacks. Moreover, Android captured 46 perce...

32GB GSM Galaxy Nexus canceled, Google hopes you really like streaming

32GB GSM Galaxy Nexus canceled, Google hopes you really like streaming

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

This probably won't matter too much to our American readers, but the 32GB version of the GSM Galaxy Nexus has been canceled according to Expansys and Negri Electronics. Initially the latest Nexus device was supposed to be sold in both 32 and 16 gigabyte varieties. But, for whatever reason, the larger capacity model never made it to market. Now, word is that it may never happen. A couple of importers are saying they've been notified by Samsung that handset has been discontinued, which is particularly bad news since the Gnex (as the cool kids are calling it) doesn't have a microSD slot. We hope you like streaming all your media.

An Even Bigger (!) Galaxy Note Is Coming

An Even Bigger (!) Galaxy Note Is Coming

Posted on Feb 16, 2012 by MG1

Remember yesterday, when you thought the 5.4-inch screen-having Samsung Galaxy Note was gigantic? It's tiny. TINY, I say! Why? Because rumor has it that Samsung is preparing to unleash the Galaxy Note 10.1 at MWC. Yes, that's almost twice as big.
SlashGear spotted this little oopsie on Samsung's official blog. In the company's Guide to Samsung Developer Day, developers are invited to experience the Wave 3, the Wave Y, the Galaxy Note, and the Galaxy Note 10.1. The last of which, of course, doesn't officially exist—yet. While Samsung realized its error and has removed the page, this image still exists for posterity.

Motorola DROID 4 vs DROID RAZR MAXX vs entire Verizon Android lineup

If you head to a Verizon Wireless store today looking to purchase an Android smartphone, you’re very likely going to be inundated by offers to purchase Verizon’s own unique DROID line. I’m here to tell you that the current top choices for these Motorola-made smartphones aren’t necessarily your best choice for Android or 4G-laden devices – in fact they’re not even really your best choice for Motorola-made devices on Verizon. Instead, have a quick glance at some comparisons to some lesser-advertised devices sitting right next to these hero phones to gain a better understanding of what Verizon really has to offer.

Verizon Tempts Employees With Limited Edition Droid RAZRs

Verizon Tempts Employees With Limited Edition Droid RAZRs

Posted on Feb 15, 2012 by MG1

A life spent caught up in the drudgery of retail is usually pretty free of frills, but Verizon Wireless employees may soon be getting a shot at some swanky hardware if some newly-leaked images hold true. According to Android And Me, Verizon has reached out to their employees with an offer they may not be able to refuse: limited edition Droid RAZRs and Droid RAZR MAXXs.
And what’s so limited about these edition then? The employee-only Droid RAZR sports a red and black finish on its backside rather than the monochrome stylings of its more mundane brethren, along with the device’s number within the production run.

Samsung intros trifecta of Galaxy Duos in India, new Ace included

Samsung intros trifecta of Galaxy Duos in India, new Ace included

Posted on Feb 15, 2012 by MG1

Sammy isn't taking its foot off the handset-making accelerator anytime soon. The company announced it's bringing three of its galactic machines along for an Indian ride, and while we'd previously met the dual-SIM packin' pair, the Galaxy Ace Duos is seeing life for the first time in its double-threat form. Sporting the same 832MHz CPU as its siblings, as well as a 3.5-inch display, 1650mAh battery and GSM / CDMA capabilities, the newcomer isn't much more powerful, but at least offers more screen real estate and an extra pinch of juice to get you through the day. All members of the family are rockin' Gingerbread and will start off at around $212 for the Y Duos and its Pro variant. As for the ...
