Duracell Powermat WiCC could bring wireless charging to any smartphone, we go hands-on
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Powermat may have a bright future, but the company's products to date have been expensive, slightly clunky and a generally imperfect solution for bringing wireless power to mobile devices. That could all change with WiCC. The Wireless Charging Card (WiCC) is an IEEE Power Matters Alliance (PMA) standard, with the potential to integrate Duracell Powermat technology within every mobile gadget. The incredibly thin device resembles those wafer-like SmartMedia cards once used in early digital cameras, with a similar form factor, but significantly more practicality. Each WiCC includes all the PowerMat circuitry found in the company's charging cases, while also doubling as an NFC antenna. The card'...

Nokia is expected to make a splash at MWC today with the announcement of entry level Windows Phone Tango handsets like the rumored Lumia 610, as well as a version of AT&T's Lumia 900 for the rest of the world.
Besides the news on the Windows Phone front, we are also expecting with baited breath something associated with the Pureview brand, which all clues point to being a Nokia N8 successor with a giant camera sensor.
We are also having a few new devices in the affordable Asha family aimed towards teens and emerging markets, which Nokia is unveiling today.

Samsung Galaxy S II sells over 20 million units in 10 months
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
Samsung announced in late September that the company sold 10 million Galaxy S II smartphones, and five months later the popular handset has crossed the 20-million shipment mark. The smartphone’s predecessor, the Galaxy S, took 17 months to reach the same milestone according to Samsung. When the Galaxy S II launched in April, it quickly became the company’s fastest selling smartphone. Sales are sure to slow in the coming months, however, with Samsung rumored to launch the highly anticipated Galaxy S III in April.

T-Mobile USA will have ten LTE devices up for sale by the end of 2013, the carrier’s chief technical officer has revealed, with 4G service across 50 markets as well as for the iPhone. Speaking on T-Mobile’s so-called “Challenger Strategy” conference call today, CTO Neville Ray described how the carrier would juggle its spectrum holdings to better server a new breed of high-speed hardware. Interestingly, the carrier also seems to be paving the way for 4G iPhone support.

Asus teases Retina Display Tablet for MWC 2012?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsASUS
The iPad 3 is going to double the resolution with its new Retina Display. I already pointed out in this report that I believe that the Android camp will try to beat Apple to the punch with a Retina display tablet. It could well be that Asus will show a tablet with retina display resolution at the MWC 2012. Asus released another MWC 2012 teaser video. The new one is titled: "Twice the Detail, Twice the Fun." The teaser is clearly about display resolution. The form factor of the box filled with balls resembles a tablet. Watch the Asus teaser video below. Earlier today we reported about another Asus MWC 2012 teaser video that is about a new transformer tablet with smartphone integration.

Samsung Rugby Smart offers ruggedized construction and Android 2.3 on AT&T for $99.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungRugby Smart
If you've been looking enviously at the Motorola Defy+ and its semi-waterproof construction, AT&T and Samsung might have the phone for you. The upcoming Samsung Rugby Smart is claimed to be dustproof, temperature-resistant, and able to sit in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, much like the aforementioned Defy+ and the recently-launched Pantech Element tablet. The Rugby Smart's other specs are a bit more pedestrian: it'll include HSPA+ connectivity, a 3.7-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 4GB of internal storage (with a microSD slot), 1650mAh battery, and 5MP rear camera that can shoot 720p video. There's also the requisite front-facing camera for video chat, and, of course, Android 2.3 ...

Acer Liquid Glow gets unveiled, coming to MWC 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAcerLiquid Glow
Here comes another Android smartphone that we will get to check out next week in Barcelona – the Acer Liquid Glow. The company just announced the handset officially confirming that it will be shown off at the MWC 2012 expo.
In terms of specs, we don't really know much as to what the Acer Liquid Glow has to offer. However, it seems like it will be a mid-range device, given that it sports a 3.7-inch display and a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash. Furthermore, the smartphone will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and will support NFC. And if you hate it when smartphones come only in one boring color shade, you will be happy to know that the Acer Liquid Glow will be o...

LG Optimus 4X HD announced with quad-core Tegra 3, Android 4.0
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus 4X HD
Whether you're ready for a deluge of quad-core Android handsets or not, LG is getting things started with the Optimus 4X HD. Inside, its Nvidia Tegra 3 processor is clocked at 1.5GHz, sits behind a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 IPS display, and within an 8.9mm-thin body. Thankfully, it will launch with Android 4.0, which should sing quite nicely on the quad-core chip along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. If you weren't aware, Tegra three actually offers a "companion core" with its "4-plus-1" setup that can be used in low power situations to help the phone sip on the 2150mAh battery instead of gulp at it, extending battery life. DLNA and MHL are also on board along with the obvious 8-mega...

Samsung Rugby Smart gets rendered as it anxiously awaits our drops and kicks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungRugby Smart
Rugged phones seem to be the exception more than the rule when it comes to smartphones. However, AT&T apparently has one in the pipeline dubbed the Samsung Rugby Smart. Destined to be the latest addition to the lineup of Sammy's military-spec devices, the Smart will -- as you probably guessed -- be the first member of the Rugby family to ditch the clamshell form factor and take on Android at the same time. Pocketnow, which leaked the above press renders, also mentions that the device is slated to offer Android 2.3.5, 512MB of RAM, HSPA+ and a 1,650mAh battery. Nothing impressive, to say the least, unless there are a few other surprises that await us sometime in the (hopefully) near future. W...

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G hits T-Mobile for $150 in March
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-MobileGalaxy S Blaze 4G
The Samsung Galaxy S Blaze, first teased in early January has been confirmed by T-Mobile to be landing on the network in ‘late March’ for $150 on a two-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate is applied. The device is powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It supports 42Mbps HSPA+ speeds, which T-Mobile claims is faster than the average home Internet2 broadband connected to a home.
The Galaxy S Blaze centers on a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and sports a 5-megapixel rear camera that shoots video at up to 720p, with a 1.3 front-facing camera for video chatting. While it boats a respectable set of hardware specs, the only real disappointment for users is that it will...

LG continues to announce an array of new smartphones ahead of next week’s Mobile World Congress trade show. On Wednesday, the company unveiled its follow up to the original Optimus 3D, the Optimus 3D Max. The Optimus 3D Max also features 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel duel-lens 3D rear camera, 3D video editing capabilities and NFC, and it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Samsung Galaxy S II announced for US Cellular: 'coming soon' for $230
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
We already had a strong hunch that it was coming to US Cellular, thanks to the FCC, but now it's official: Samsung's iconic Galaxy S II is finally making its way to the regional carrier in the coming weeks for $230 on a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. This version of the GSII offers the same 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos CPU found in the original version, as well as a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), an eight megapixel rear camera and 16GB internal storage are also confirmed, though we think it's highly likely this unit will feature the same specs as the rest of the series. Sadly, the device lacks support on USCC's brand new LTE network, so brace yo...
