Microsoft teases a WP7 version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, plus new handsets from Fujitsu, ZTE and Acer

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's WPC 2011 conference which we reported from yesterday is in full swing, and special time was dedicated to Windows Phone, with Redmond showing off not one or two, but four new WP handsets. While it didn't specify many details about the phones themselves, Microsoft reiterated that we will have three new manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon - Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE.
But there were actually four handsets on stage, with the fourth being none other but the Windows Phone version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, one of the best handsets money can currently buy. Samsung's phone, as well as all others that were present during the keynote, seemed to have the good ol' front-facing camera, which i...

According to Best buy, Windows Phone 7 looks like Windows, syncs documents

Posted on Jul 08, 2011 by MG1

We know Microsoft’s retail partners have not been doing the best job selling Windows Phone 7, but when they are trying to be informative and still get it wrong, it is no wonder their sales people get it so wrong.
Such is certainly the case with Best Buy. From their website describing the various mobile operating systems, Best Buy says:
Windows Mobile and Windows Phone 7
Of the different smartphone platforms, the Windows Mobile line has undergone the most changes. In its earliest configuration as Pocket PC 2000, the OS was originally designed to work as a PDA platform. In 2003, Windows Mobile was released and quickly found a home as an enterprise smartphone platform due to its tight integrati...

WP7 Mango to include Battery Saver setting

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Anyone with a touchscreen smartphone knows that battery life is something you have to constantly keep an eye on. Regardless of the model of phone, or OS you may be running, chances are that at some point or another you've looked into ways to make your battery last longer, even if it's just a matter of carrying a charging cable with you at all times. As smartphones get more powerful, and users can do more, battery life will keep taking more hits. Microsoft sees this, and has built Batter Saver settings into Windows Phone 7 Mango.
If you're an Android user, you know that there are dozens if not hundreds of apps dedicated to squeezing more juice out of your battery. Most include turning off ce...

Samsung Galaxy S 2 with Windows Phone 7 incoming?

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is selling like hotcakes and is, by all accounts including our Samsung Galaxy S 2 review, a pretty hot bit of hardware. Now it seems like Samsung could be about to try and use that success as a springboard for a new Windows Phone 7 device.
Clues that the Samsung Galaxy S 2 could be reborn in Windows Phone 7 form have popped up in device testing logs. Read on for the intriguing evidence that the successor to the Samsung Omnia 7 may be from a different galaxy…
The first clue that a Samsung Galaxy S2-style phone with Windows Phone 7 onboard is being toyed with comes from the Bluetooth SIG. It shows a device with the model number SGH-i937 in its listings. That’s a leap of ...

Samsung preps first Windows Phone

Samsung preps first Windows Phone "Mango" device

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Samsung’s first Windows Phone “Mango” device has been listed by standards body Bluetooth SIG as the South Korean electronics giant prepares to lead the pack when Mango phones begin launching this fall. Details surrounding the smartphone are not available for the time being, though the model number SGH-i937 has already been confirmed as the Windows Phone-touting successor to the Samsung Focus, which carried the model number SGH-i917. WMPoweruser.com speculates that the device could feature a case and specs similar to the Galaxy S II — Samsung’s fastest-selling smartphone of all time — but that speculation appears baseless. It looks like Samsung will have stiff competition from Nokia when Mang...

Microsoft Mobile Operating Systems continue to lose Market Share in USA

Microsoft Mobile Operating Systems continue to lose Market Share in USA

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Comscore has released their monthly market share numbers, and confirms the recent Nielsen research showing Windows Phone 7 is not growing in USA.
They reveal 76.8 million people in USA own smartphones, up 11% from 3 months earlier, and Microsoft’s share of that installed base continues to drop rapidly, now sitting at 5.8% or 4.45 million users. This is down 0.9% from 6.7% the previous month.
The effect is likely due to the lack of new Windows Phone 7 handsets being released into the market regularly, unlike on Android, something which will not be as much of an issue next year, when handsets will be released throughout the year rather than in a single wave.
It does moreover show that Microsof...

Nokia: 'We won't fragment Windows Phone 7'

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

While Nokia busily beavers away on its first batch of Windows Phone 7 devices, it is also working hard to make sure that its app store integrates seamlessly into the OS' ecosystem.
Speaking with TechRadar, Nokia's Senior Vice President of Developer and Marketplace, Marco Argenti explained that Nokia is determined to avoid fragmenting the ecosystem with apps that are incompatible with other manufacturers' handsets
"We'll create elements of distinction, but we don't want to fragment the ecosystem because in the end we want the whole platform to win," he told us.

He explained that Nokia's apps will be tailored to its best hardware assets, like high quality cameras and location servi...

Marketplace hits 25,000 apps

Marketplace hits 25,000 apps

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

Marketplace has just hit another major milestone, crossing the 25,000 app mark in just 8 months and 10 days. It took the Android market considerably longer at more than 15 months after launch to cross the same mark, and took only 4 days longer than the iPhone app store
Leaving aside the concerns about the flood of spam apps, it is still agreat achievement and a sign of confidence in the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

Microsoft lifts its Mango Developer NDA- open the flood gates!

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

On the WP7Dev Podcast Cliff Simpkins, Product Manager for WP7 at Microsoft, has made it clear the earlier restrictions developers faced on sharing information on Mango has now been lifted.
The situation has rapidly evolved from no information at all (“… the developer promises not to publish any content, screen shots or comments in any media…”) to some posting allowed, as long as its cleared by Microsoft (Permission to publish content, screenshots or comments based on this pre-release code can be obtained from Microsoft on a case-by-case basis) to the final climb down now.
Simpkins said the language has been revised, saying the intent was meant for developers to not share the actual code wit...

Windows Phone Facebook app gets push notifications

Windows Phone Facebook app gets push notifications

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

The Windows Phone Facebook app has just received a major update to include push notifications.
The updated Windows Phone Facebook app will now include push notifications for actions like messages, feed comments, photo tags, photo comments, tagged photo comments and more. The major advantage of the push notification is that you don’t have to dive into the app to know when things are going on.
Microsoft’s smartphone platform already had deep integration with this social network, as your Facebook contact info can be pulled in to your contacts lists. I still see the need for a standalone app for the social network though and it’s good to see it continue to receive improvements.

Kik sends passwords and messages without encryption

Kik sends passwords and messages without encryption

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by Immortal

Kik, the popular and free messaging service which has just arrived on Windows Phone 7 is a great service that works very well.
Raphael Riviera from WithinWindows has however analysed the data flowing from the app to the internet and discovered the software sends everything, including passwords and messages in plain text.
This means when you are on WIFI at work or cafe for example, anyone with a network analyser on the same network will be able to see your messages, get your full name, user name, email address, password and possibly even impersonate you.
This is a apparently a flaw which has been in existence for at least a year, suggesting the company does not really care about security.
If...

Windows Phone is first platform to get AmazonFresh app for grocery shopping

Windows Phone is first platform to get AmazonFresh app for grocery shopping

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

This app is sort of interesting, but the concept is certainly not new. There have been online grocery shopping services before and they have all eventually gone under. Amazon is trying the online grocery thing out again and looking to get the service onto smartens with a new app. You might think that the place to start would be to make the app for the iPhone or Android smartphones. Amazon has chosen Windows Phone as the place to start with the AmazonFresh app.
AmazonFresh is the name of the Amazon grocery shopping service. This actually makes sense when you realize that the grocery delivery service is only in Seattle right now. Seattle is home to Microsoft and you can bet that compared to ot...

HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets

HTC claims Windows Phone 7 dominance, sells 1 in 2 WP7 handsets

Posted on Jun 28, 2011 by MG1

There have been much speculation regarding the contribution each Windows Phone 7 OEM makes to the ecosystem.
Now HTC’s senior executive vice president Fred Liu told CENS HTC is the major player in the Windows Phone 7 market, selling 1 out of every 2 Windows Phones sold.
This is of course despite 4 other OEMs, including giants like LG and Samsung, vying for the business.
HTC also went on to say they sell 2 out of every 10 Android phones. This allows us to see that little more than 10% of HTC’s business is from Microsoft’s OS, which is clearly not much*.
Windows Phone 7 therefore suffers from being dominated by one OEM who is not deeply invested in the OS. With Nokia jumping in head first...
