Good news for all of our Ubuntu users out there. Ubuntu One has expanded its Android app presence by releasing Ubuntu One Files into the Android Market. This pairs with the Ubuntu One Music app which has been in the Market for a while now, and together they offer a solid combination of cloud storage and mobile access, but it does come at a cost.
Ubuntu One is essentially the same as Apple's iCloud, except of course that Ubuntu One has been around about 2 years longer than iCloud. Opera launches updated versions of its two mobile browsers for Android

Opera has upgraded both of its mobile browsers for Android flavored devices. Opera Mini 6.1 and Opera Mobile 11.1 are both available now on the Android Market. Both have had support for Google voice search added along with Google AutoComplete and Intelligent domain suggest. Not only will these new features help speed things up when it comes to entering a URL, they will also give you alternative sites to check out.

Velocity Micro made to sign Microsoft patent deal on Android

Velocity Micro on Wednesday was the second in as many days to be pushed into signing a patent deal with Microsoft over Android. The deal will see royalties paid on every Cruz tablet sold. Company chief Randy Copeland spun the loss by arguing that it would help lead to "exciting new Cruz tablets" later on.
The deal immediately follows one with General Dynamics and shows Microsoft now turning most of its attention to smaller Android device makers located inside the US. Most of its early focus on royalty collection was on larger phone designers like HTC.

Microsoft collects licensing fees from two small Android manufacturers

Two small Android OEMs, Velocity Micro and General Dynamics, each cut a check payable to the order of Microsoft to take care of licensing fees that allow the pair to use the Android OS. Even though Android is considered Google's baby-and rightly so-the gang at Redmond still have some patents involved in the software which the company feels it should be paid for to license to users. The amount of the payments to Microsoft has not been disclosed.
While Velocity Micro and General Dynamics are two small minnows in a sea of sharks, getting the two smaller manufacturer's to pay allows Microsoft to say that a precedent has been set and that since the smaller companies have paid to license Microsoft...

Google has unveiled their new social layer today, and it is called Google+. The trouble is that it is only open to a select few invitees, and those of us who have been invited are not yet allowed to write about the product in detail. That said, if you are a lucky invitee, be sure to grab the new Google+ app from the Android Market.
The app includes the basic features of the service including Circles (how you choose who you share things with), Stream (shared items), Instant Upload and Huddle. Google now activates 500,000 Android devices per day, on track to hit 1 million per day in October

On May 10th at the 2011 Google I/O conference, the search engine company announced that they were activating over 400,000 Android devices every single day. Today, via a tweet from Andy Rubin, the father of Android, pictured above wearing glasses, we now know that number is up to 500,000 per day, and more importantly it’s growing at a rate of 4.4% per week. Microsoft inks patent deal with small Android manufacturer

Microsoft has secured another avenue of income from its smartphone patents, as it has signed a deal with General Dynamics Itronix, a relatively unknown rugged device manufacturer. Microsoft inked a deal with HTC last year that allows HTC to use Microsoft's patents in its Android smartphones.
The terms of the Itronix deal have not been disclosed, but it is evident from the statements that the company is paying Microsoft for the privilege of using its patents. The companies' statement on the agreement says "Although the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties from General Dynamics Itronix under the agreement."

Google and Taiwan duke it out over Android Market refund period

Google has found a new enemy, and this time it is the Taiwanese government. The government of Taiwan is in a disagreement with Google over the 15 minute return policy that is present in the Android Market. As a result, Google has made paid apps inaccessible in the Taiwanese Android Market.
The conflict occurs because of a Taiwanese law that states that all items purchased over the internet require a 7 day return policy, since the buyer cannot physically touch the item before shelling out money for it. Leak reveals Samsung's first Android slider for Verizon

PocketNow obtained a couple of leaked photographs of a Samsung device that is apparently the SCH-i405. For the Korean based manufacturer, it will be its first Android flavored device with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard for Verizon, and has a resemblance to the Samsung Epic 4G that currently resides at Sprint.
The SCH-i405 model number puts the handset right after the Samsung Continuum which means that the specs, when released, probably won't blow your mind. The phone did receive Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification but has yet to meet the august members of the FCC. That gives us about 6-8 weeks before a possible launch on Verizon. In case you don't know, OnLive is an interesting service that has been building in popularity since its release about a year ago in the US. The idea is essentially cloud gaming, where the full power needed to run a game is being done by servers in the cloud, then the video, audio and controls are synced to your OnLive device. So, assuming you have a fast enough Internet connection, you could play anything from F3ar, to Batman: Arkham Asylum streaming either to your computer or OnLive box hooked to your computer. You can even watch others play against each other in games like NBA 2K11 or Homefront.

We don't know if this device is "super confidential" or not, but we've just come across yet another Nokia N9 lookalike with a non-MeeGo operating system on board. Well, it looks that way, anyhow. There's no way to verify that the Android homescreen we see above is a legitimate Gingerbread installation and not a mere screenshot (the resolution looks all wrong, for one thing), but the source of this image is the same Chinese fellow that posted a picture of Nokia's Windows Phone prototype, the Sea Ray, way back in May, so we're inclined to believe he's got an inside line on these things. It's not entirely clear why when a company decides to make a product targeted to women, they usually just wrap it up in candy colors and fluff, as if the target market is Barbie.
In the case of the HTC Glamor, though, it makes sense, since the most likely buyers will be teenage girls, judging by the jolly colors in a leaked picture of HTC's upcoming feminine handset.

The good news is that Hulu Plus for Android is on the market, but the bad news is that you may not be able to install it yet. The official Hulu Blog has just been updated with news that six phones -- Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Droid II, Motorola Droid X, and the Motorola Atrix -- are on the compatible list with "additional device announcements" due later in the year. While there's some crossover with the list of Netflix-compatible devices, it's hardly complete and many flagship phones are still missing. Some might argue that ASUS already has an ARM-powered Android laptop in its inventory thanks to the Eee Pad Transformer, however the company's now been identified as planning a more spacious 13-inch notebook device, whose power and pricing could well be even more attractive than the Transformer's. We should naturally be wary of the source here, DigiTimes having a record that's as patchy as the grass at Wimbledon after the first week's play, but the Taiwanese rumormonger says ASUS has already made launch plans for this 13-incher and will be using "NVIDIA's processor" inside.
