I’m Android Watch Now Available For Pre-Order

I’m Android Watch Now Available For Pre-Order

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

While I found the I’m Watch ridiculous and feel that wearable tech isn’t nearly as close to being viable as we’ve been led to expect, the watch is actually shipping and will cost $350 when Blue Sky begins selling their pre-orders.
The watch runs a Freescale IMX233 CPU and connects to a cellphone via Bluetooth. It lets you check messages and other wee bits of information and little else.
You can check out the exciting video render at the Blue Sky website, below, and place your order now so you can, eventually, forget about the watch after it runs out of power and you decide it’s too much trouble to recharge.

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

A 10-year-old girl has figured out a way to outsmart game developers and cheat at games designed for iOS and Android by exploiting a security vulnerability within the clock system. The cheat works by modifying the clock settings on the device to accelerate time within the game's environment.

Apparently, CyFi, as the hacker calls herself, was bored playing Farmville-type games and wanted to speed up time in the virtual world to make crops grow faster. Her fiddling with the clock on the mobile device revealed a "zero day" exploit that tricked the game into thinking much more time had passed than was actually the case. Circumventing the game's built-in clock advancement cheat blocks involved m...

YouTube for Android updated

YouTube for Android updated

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Google has always had a somewhat idiosyncratic way of numbering its software versions. Sometimes, big software changes get a big number increase, like the jump from Android Gingerbread (2.3) to Honeycomb (3.0/3.1). However, sometimes big number changes fly by (Chrome's newest stable release is version 13, and the Chrome browser isn't even 2 years old yet.) But, with the newest version of YouTube for Android, Google is taking a different path: a minor version number bump (from 2.1.6 to 2.2.14), and brings a couple of very nice features.
Along with the requisite bug fixes, the new version of YouTube will allow you to edit the title, description and privacy of your uploaded videos, and create,...

Android conquers almost 50 percent of smartphone market

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

A new study by researcher Canalys indicates that Google’s Android platform has reached nearly 50 percent of the global smartphone market.
Canalys’ Q2 2011 smartphone market estimates show that globally, the industry grew by 73 percent year-on-year with over 100 million devices shipped in Q2 2011. This seems to align with a study from IMS Research that claims smartphones will account for 28 percent of handsets sold this year.
Android ranked number one in 35 of the 56 countries that Canalys polled in the market estimate. Shipments of devices running Google’s operating system were up 379 percent from this time last year.
Apple’s iOS platform took the number two spot with a share of 19 percen...

PayPal announces winners of its third developer challenge

PayPal announces winners of its third developer challenge

Posted on Aug 04, 2011 by MG1

PayPal announced winners of its third developer challenge, which if you recall was all about Android. According to the official line, judges had a “great time reviewing all of the submissions” and were pleased to see solutions that demonstrate how mobile payments will change the way we pay and get paid in the future. Without further ado, here are the winners:
1. Mopper (winner of $25K)
This little mobile app (and an accompanying service in the background) is made to reach customers through Print Commerce. Read something you like (an ad), scan a QR tag, and click pay with PayPal. It’s dead simple, yet it works.
2. PayPal for ThruTu Button (winner of $15K)
ThruTu allows users to share all kind...

Is the Amazon App Store bad for developers?

Is the Amazon App Store bad for developers?

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

Whenever I get a new Android device, I always throw on the Amazon App Store in order to get free, high-quality paid apps each day. While that’s great for consumers and has surely brought in a lot of traffic, is this approach good for app makers?
According to a blog post from the Shifty Jelly team, the Amazon App Store free app giveaway program is great for consumers and for Amazon but it can be kind of a raw deal for developers. The Shift Jelly team said that it was approached by Amazon to be the free paid app of the day but it wouldn’t receive any revenue for it. This isn’t the case of Amazon taking the financial hit, as the store is asking the developers to take the hit for good press and ...

Android now on nearly half of all smartphones

Android now on nearly half of all smartphones

Posted on Aug 03, 2011 by MG1

There are over 500,000 daily Android activations and we know this for a fact, but the platform has proliferated to now reach nearly half of all smartphones in the world, research gurus from Canalys stated in a report summarizing data for the second quarter of the year. To be perfectly correct, Android's exact market share stands at 48% as per the researchers, with Asia Pacific being the largest market out there.

Google's platform has taken the crown by shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010 and since then it's only increasing its presence. In the second quarter, Android phone shipments stood at 51.9 million units, skyrocketing 379% on the year. Samsung, HTC and LG were in the forefront o...

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. Simply put, that's a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let's not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the l...

Android tablet population estimated at 1.2 million

Android tablet population estimated at 1.2 million

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

While nobody would argue that Android smartphones are abundant these days, the situation with tablets running Google's mobile platform might not be so bright. According to an estimate given by the guys over at Daring Fireball, there may be as little as 1.17 million Android tablets currently in use worldwide.
Coming up with this number did not require any elaborate calculations. The estimate took into account some statistical data provided by the Android Market, which showed that between June 24 and July 1 of this year, only 0.9% of all devices that have accessed Google's software marketplace boast a screen size of 7 inches or above. Multiply that by the number of total Android devices out th...

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.

Google adds multiple APK support to Android Market

Google adds multiple APK support to Android Market

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

Google has enabled a new feature in the Android Market that should make the lives of developers and users a bit easier. Developers can now list multiple APKs (the file type for Android apps) under the same app name in the Android Market. This will allow for both tablet and smartphone versions of an app to be listed under the same name.
When a user downloads an app that has multiple versions attached to it, the Android Market will provide the appropriate version of the app for the user's device, whether that be a smartphone or a tablet.
This will make it easier for users, as they will not have to separately purchase the tablet version and smartphone version of the same app to use it on multip...

BlackBerry PlayBook Android App player leaks, brings thousands of apps from the Market

BlackBerry PlayBook Android App player leaks, brings thousands of apps from the Market

Posted on Jul 25, 2011 by MG1

RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook features a handful of apps, but we've been teased with the promise of Android app support for months. And now we seem closer than ever to the final version as a beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android app player leaked out. The application was found through a changelog in an update to the Desktop Manager and tech blog N4BB has been sent an old beta build which might not have the final interface (there's no back button, so you have to swipe on the bezel at the bottom to go back), but it works.
Ironically, the app player is based on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, a version that's only available on a few phones yet. That should translate into support for the more than 200,...

Android tablets now 30% of the market, Windows tablets outsold PlayBook in Q2

Posted on Jul 22, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has yet to launch its tablet-optimized operating system and yet slates running various versions of the Windows operating system still managed to outsell Research In Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook last quarter. According to market research firm Strategy Analytics’ latest report, Windows-powered media tablets owned 4.6% of the global market in the second quarter of 2011. In the same period, RIM’s PlayBook made up just 3.3% of the market. The firm also shows that competition may finally be heating up in the tablet space. Apple, which owned more than 94% of the market in the second quarter last year, saw the iPad’s share slide to 61.3% according to Strategy Analytics. Over the same perio...

CyanogenMod 7 hits 500,000 installs, eclipses previous milestone

CyanogenMod 7 hits 500,000 installs, eclipses previous milestone

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

Looks like another round of roman candles are in order. After already setting off the celebratory fireworks for its previous user install milestone, CyanogenMod 7's done it again -- this time reaching past the half a million mark. The highly customizable Android homebrew is arguably the biggest aftermarket OS in the ROM-flashing campus, and it has the numbers to back it up. According to the site's stats, the official release of 7.0.3 saw the biggest spike in handset installations -- at 76,897 -- with unofficial nightly builds almost doubling that figure. Sure, it sometimes seems like the rooting community is a vast, silent majority, but it's actually a wafer-thin slice of Google's mobile pie...
