Sprint’s 2005 merger with Nextel will likely go down as the textbook example for how telecom mergers can go heinously wrong. The major reason? Sprint’s inability to effectively integrate Nextel’s iDEN network and services into its own CDMA-based network and services. The iDEN network cost Sprint dearly, as the carrier was forced to write off a $29 billion loss from the Nextel acquisition in late 2007 and then saw an astonishing 4 million wireless subscribers flee in 2008. To make matters worse, the iDEN network was clogging up spectrum on the valuable 800MHz band that Sprint could have used to deploy an LTE network. Sprint is no longer the majority owner of Clearwire

Sprint no longer has a majority stake in Clearwire, it announced on Monday. This now means its voting rights in the venture are increased and there is no risk of defaulting on its own debt. Late last year, Sprint invested hundreds of millions into Clearwire to help it out of debt and to build out its 4G LTE network.
"Now that our economic interest has fallen below 50 percent, we are reclaiming our full voting rights so that our voting rights and economic rights are once again aligned," said Sprint spokesperson Scott Sloat.

Official is as official does... right? In a bid to one-up the Galaxy S II's launch here in the States, Samsung has just announced that five carriers will soon have their own customized versions of the Galaxy S III. And by "soon," we mean "beginning in June." AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular are all in line to take part, with exact pricing and availability to be announced by each of the five carriers in the coming weeks. We are, however, told to expect on-contract prices as low as $199, and it sounds as if all five variants will keep the same 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

Sprint has great news for those of you out there salivating to get your hands on the latest EVO, who didn’t get a chance to pre-order. Many of you know that all HTC One US variants have been held up at customs due to some Apple infringements. Thankfully, last week devices finally starting getting through customs. This allowed for the fourth largest wireless provider in the United States to begin shipping out handsets to customers who pre-ordered devices before the whole customs problem.

Sprint on Tuesday announced that it plans to cease service on its iDEN Nextel network as early as June 30th, 2013. The nation’s third largest wireless provider is looking to migrate business and government customers from the old push-to-talk technology onto Sprint Direct Connect, which operates on the carrier’s 3G CDMA network and offers improved in-building coverage, and increased voice and data capacity. Sprint will begin sending written notices to iDEN customers beginning June 1st, 2012. The dated Nextel spectrum will be reassigned for the carrier’s upcoming LTE network.

Sprint agrees to $1 billion credit deal to buy Ericsson network equipment

Sprint has announced a new $1 billion credit agreement that will be used to purchase equipment from Ericsson for the carrier's Network Vision project. Deutsche Bank leads the group of banks that will be providing the credit facility, and the purchased equipment will help Sprint build out its LTE network, for which the carrier was just recently granted permission to use its 800MHz spectrum. The network is expected to go live in six markets by the middle of this year, with the full rollout due in 2013. LG LS860 leaked: a five-row QWERTY sliding smartphone with Sprint LTE?

BriefMobile's tipster has done it again, bringing us another leaked image of a rumored high-end LG smartphone. This time, however, the handset's claim to fame isn't a quad-core processor or a 13-megapixel camera: rather, the LG LS860 "Cayenne" allegedly has the neatly staggered five-row QWERTY keyboard, 4-inch IPS screen, and 1.2GHz dual-core processor it needs to be a competent Droid 4 competitor. While we wouldn't dream of suggesting that the supposed Sprint LTE smartphone might succeed without even seeing the device in the flesh, we sure hope BriefMobile is right that the slider will come with Android 4.0 right from the beginning. Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones in Q1, cuts net losses to $863 million

Sprint managed to cut its net losses to $863 million last quarter, while adding more than 1.1 million new customers to its network. It highlights the iPhone as a big seller: having sold 1.8 million of the devices in Q4 last year, it shifted a further 1.5 million in Q1 2012, 44 percent of which were to new customers. The company has also seen growth in postpaid customers — a net growth of 263,000 in the network last quarter alone, with each spending an average of $4.03 more than last year. The resulting Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of $59.88 is a new record for Sprint, improving on last quarter, which set the previous high mark.

Sprint will start taking pre-orders for the HTC EVO 4G LTE on May 7.
"On May 7, call dibs on an HTC EVO 4G LTE. Only online, you can pre-order your EVO 4G LTE and we'll do our best to get it to you before others get a glimpse," Sprint said in a note on its website.
Customers can sign up to be notified via email when the pre-order link is live.

When its network finally landed Apple’s iPhone, many people feared unlimited data would be heading out the door. Sprint continued to offer the plans, however, and will continue to do so even after its 4G LTE network goes live later this year and once it launches Apple’s next-generation iPhone. ”I’m not anticipating the unlimited plan would change by that point,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told CNET. “That’s our distinctive differentiator.”

It looks like Sprint and Motorola are working on the successor of Photon 4G, which as far as we’re hearing will be called Photon Q 4G LTE. Yep it will run on Sprint’s soon-to-be-launched LTE network and aside from the new radio, it will also sport a 720p HD screen and perhaps a quad-core processor. The last thing is just a speculation on my end, though when you think about it with all other major handset makers set to announce a quad-core device (some of them already have such product – HTC One X), Moto should do something about it and prepare its answer…

T-Mobile is committed to blocking Verizon’s proposed purchase of AWS spectrum from various cable companies. Verizon recently offered to sell all of its block A and B 700MHz spectrum in exchange for FCC approval of its AWS deal. However, T-Mobile USA CEO Philip Humm personally met with senior FCC officials last week to insist that the sale would not be enough to mitigate any negative effects that the AWS deal would create.

Samsung's popular Galaxy Nexus finally landed on Sprint, though not without complications.
The Galaxy Nexus is currently the flagship device for Google's Android 4.0 OS, or Ice Cream Sandwich, which we called "savvy, futuristic and both competent and confident."
The Sprint version doesn't bring too many new features to the table. And, those hoping to take advantage of the phone's fast 4G LTE network capabilities will have to wait a while.
