FCC clears Sharp's Galapagos 7-inch Android tablet

FCC clears Sharp's Galapagos 7-inch Android tablet

Sharp is looking to enter the overhyped tablet market with its own product. The rumor says it that the Japanese company will launch not one but few tablets, all of which will rely on the Android platform.
Now we have FCC to confirm there is some merit in these stories, with a 7-inch tablet called “Galapagos” getting the Commission’s seal of approval. Yep this means the device is ready to be introduced on the U.S. soil, though it doesn’t mean that will happen soon. Quite the contrary, we’ve been seeing quite a few mobile products that were never introduced in the U.S. and then some which were not launched anywhere in the world. We’re hoping that won’t be the case here and that soon enough we’...

New 7-inch Sharp Galapagos tablet passes through FCC

New 7-inch Sharp Galapagos tablet passes through FCC

Posted on Jul 01, 2011 by MG1

The latest Sharp Galapagos tablet has passed though the FCC certification process. The new 7-inch tablet fits between a 5.5-inch and a 10.8-inch in Sharp’s Android tablet range. The only details to emerge from the FCC testing reveal, unsurprisingly, that it is equipped with an 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi radio.

A visit to the Sharp Japan Galapagos website does not yield any additional details either. The tablet has yet to be released in its home market with only the 10.8- and 5.5-inch tablets currently on sale. Android 2.4 could be a possibility for the device, which is said to be the first version of the Android OS with optimizations for 7-inch tablet devices.

It looks like one of Sharp's Aquos 3D handsets is going to be traveling to the U.S. A model called the CDMA SHI12 has just visited the FCC. The handset features an 8MP 3D camera in the back, GPS and tri-band CDMA connectivity. This could be the IS12SH that Sharp announced last week for Japan. If so, this device will have a 4.2 inch qHD display and feature Android 2.3 under the hood.
