Nintendo announced during its E3 press conference on Tuesday that its next-generation Wii U video game console will launch ahead of the holidays this year. The gaming giant confirmed a number of new details surrounding its upcoming console during a preview event on Monday, and now Nintendo has revealed a launch target for the first time. While the company neglected to provide a specific release date, the Wii U will likely launch before the holiday shopping season peaks this year. Pricing has not yet been announced, though Nintendo did confirm that the Wii U will ship with the multiplayer game “NintendoLand” in addition to a GamePad controller.

It is starting to feel like whenever a device or company is losing steam, there's one surefire way to at least get it some buzz: claim that Android is going to be added in. We've seen it time and again. There have been multiple rumors that RIM would be either switching to Android, making its apps available for Android, or simply selling to the largest Android manufacturer. There have been rumors that Sony might adopt Android for its PlayStation products. And now, it has been rumored that the next Nintendo console, the Wii U, will have Android built-in.

Mario-maker Nintendo has posted its first financial loss in thirty years as Wii sales founder and smartphones boom.
The company lost 43.2 billion yen over the course of the last financial year (about $533m, £329m), but it had expected to lose 65 billion yen so it's not all bad.
Why the financial gloom? Well, Wii sales are dropping as the console ages, the Nintendo 3DS is selling at a loss to entice users in, big-title game releases have been few and far between - and the strength of the Japanese yen hasn't helped matters either.

Barring any last minute surprises, Nintendo will be the first of the big three console makers to come out with a next generation living room game system. It's the Wii U, and it will ship with HD graphics support, a funky new tablet controller, and updated guts that, in theory, should have developers excited. It is, after all, a new toy to play with. Sony and Nintendo have each turned to gaming stalwart SEGA to help them pad out their gaming options, resurrecting classic titles from the company’s back catalog for the PS3 and 3DS. The PlayStation Plus gaming membership program now offers six Genesis titles – including Sonic 1 and Streets of Rage 2 - for free download, while Nintendo’s Virtual Console for the 3DS will get its own selection of titles from SEGA’s Game Gear line-up.
PS3 gamers get a second shot at Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Golden Axe, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Streets of Rage 2. The six games went up for download in 2011, but were promptly whipped away again. It’s not clear how long they’ll remain in the PlayStation Plus catalog...

Nintendo's Friday briefing in the wake of its tough quarterly results has confirmed that it plans to at last go head-to-head with Microsoft and Sony in a persistent online gaming network. Just called Nintendo Network, it will let gamers download chat and play with each other without needing friend codes in addition to getting game add-ons. Nintendo cuts 3DS sales forecast, will report first annual loss

Nintendo recently published a note in which it said it will report an annual operating loss of 45 billion yen ($575 million) for the December quarter. Analysts had expected the Japan-based gaming giant to report a 4.2 billion yen loss, Reuters said Thursday. Sony and Nintendo have dropped support for the controversial SOPA bill, backtracking on what has been accused as a pro-censorship push by legislators amid threats of internet attack from groups like Anonymous. Both companies are now absent from the official list of supporters [pdf link] of the Stop Online Piracy Act, along with games publisher Electronic Arts, though it’s unclear how much of the decision – by Sony Computer Entertainment, at least – was swayed by Anonymous’ threats to target first the PlayStation Network and then individual executives at the firm.

A quiet update to the list of Stop Online Piract Act supporters (PDF) has shown that Nintendo and Sony have backed away from the proposed bill. Both were originally endorsing the bill as of November but quietly removed themselves from the list sometime in the past month. Neither has acknowledged the change in attitude.
Game developer EA has also dropped its SOPA support.
All three have an interest in curbing piracy of their games. They may have withdrawn support after seeing the full consequences of the bill, which could see site taken down or blocked if even just a small portion of its content was deemed illegal. Nintendo completes 3DS Ambassador program, delivers ten GBA games to early adopters

If you've still got the 3DS price drop blues, perhaps a fresh (and final) infusion of free games will help. Early adopters that signed into the Nintendo eShop before August 11th will find ten GameBoy Advance games tacked on to their handheld's purchase history, retrievable via the same clunky redownload system that delivered the 3DS Ambassador program's NES titles. Thankfully, the unintuitive process is relatively simple -- just hop into the eShop's menu, scroll down to "Settings / Other", and select "Your Downloads," to claim your (potentially-exclusive) games. Short of having a 3DS guide us through the Louvre, we can't think of a better use for Nintendo's fledgling handheld.

The Nintendo 3DS has had its share of problems, not least its fleetingly short battery life. It sounds like the upcoming 3DS Circle Pad Pro accessory may not be sharing in its host's plight, however. An Andriasang reader with visual proof of owning the accessory — just a tad earlier than its December 10th Japanese launch — says the bundled manual claims it'll survive 480 hours on a single AAA cell. We're still slightly mystified as to why Nintendo didn't use the opportunity of a bulky accessory to extend the stamina of the console itself, but if this pans out, at least the cost has been kept relatively low. The Circle Pad Pro launches in Japan this Saturday for 1,500 yen, or 6,990 yen bundle...

The seventh generation consoles, in tech terms, are pretty ancient. The Xbox 360 landed almost seven years ago to the day - around the same time as Motorola began offering the RAZR V3i handset in gold, and Mozilla went live with Firefox 1.5 - and when the Wii was launched a year later, the iPhone was a just a hopeful dream of fanboys everywhere.
But, along with the PS3, the consoles have survived the test of time and in Microsoft and Nintendo's case are still breaking records.

Nintendo 3DS firmware update delayed until December

Nintendo 3DS gamers waiting for the planned November firmware update can put down their consoles, or at least stop checking for an update, because it isn't coming this month.
Nintendo has confirmed that the update has been postponed, and will now arrive on 8 December. The Japanese gaming giant has stated that it is "sorry to inconvenience" 3DS owners out there and has thanked them for their patience.
The update adds the ability to record and watch back 3D video, adds extra games for your StreetPass Miis and lets you transfer data between multiple devices.
