Microsoft flatly denies any interest in building Windows Phone devices

Microsoft flatly denies any interest in building Windows Phone devices

Posted on Jun 26, 2012 by MG1

Last week we reported on a rumor from industry OEMs that Microsoft was sourcing someone to build a Windows Phone. It wasn’t know whether that would be for some sort of development platform, or a retail product, but some industry analysts thought it was more likely that Microsoft would bring a phone to market (and based on your comments, more than one of you were hoping it would pan out as well).
Microsoft flatly denied today that they have any interest in doing so, telling InformationWeek that they have no plans to manufacture their own phone. This is of some note, as Microsoft usually denies all rumors as a matter of policy. We’d guess that they don’t want to rile their Windows OEMs with si...

HTC's plan for Windows Phone 8

HTC's plan for Windows Phone 8

Posted on Jun 25, 2012 by MG1

Just a few days ago, Microsoft unveiled some of the bigger features it was working on in its upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform, which is set to launch in the fall. Windows Phone has failed to really take off in the United States, partly due to few carriers supporting the platform, but also due to several manufacturers holding off on the platform until it was more fully baked.
We learned on Wednesday that carrier partners were lining up in droves to get behind the Windows Phone 8 platform, and yesterday The Verge learned of HTC’s plans for the fall. According to a tipster familiar with the matter, HTC is preparing three Windows Phone 8 devices, a high-end device named “Zenith,” a mid-ranged p...

HTC Windows Phone 8 roadmap leaks out

HTC Windows Phone 8 roadmap leaks out

Posted on Jun 22, 2012 by MG1

HTC is now probably the second-most important Windows Phone 8 manufacturer as Samsung is now mostly focused on Android, and Nokia is Microsoft’s sidekick, and good news is that HTC Windows Phone 8 roadmap has just leaked out.
Here’s what you’d get: the HTC Rio, HTC Zenith and HTC Accord. Just like on Android, HTC seems to use a trio of devices to hit different price points and still keep its focus.
Starting from the most affordable of the bunch, the HTC Rio will feature a 4-inch WVGA screen and come with a 5-megapixel camera shooting 720p video. The Qualcomm MSM8227, part of the Snapdragon S4 family, is what powers the devices and it works along with 512MB of RAM. Connectivity-wise, the upc...

Microsoft Windows Phone 8 release date -- launches in Fall 2012

Posted on Jun 21, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft’s big week continues. The Redmond-based software — and hardware — giant on Monday unveiled its first foray into the tablet hardware market, the Microsoft Surface. Based on Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro, the Surface sets the bar high for Microsoft’s vendor partners as they prepare their own Windows 8 laptops and tablets, which will launch later this year. Moving on from tablets and pushing deeper into the mobile space, Microsoft on Wednesday took the wraps off the latest version of its smartphone operating system, Windows Phone 8.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Summit kicked off on Wednesday and while the press and tech blogs are still buzzing about the company’s first tablet, focus will ...

Microsoft unveils Surface line of Windows 8 tablets

Microsoft unveils Surface line of Windows 8 tablets

Posted on Jun 19, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft announced Surface, a line of Windows 8 tablets tonight at the “big event” everyone’s been talking about. The two models are similar to the company’s strategy for different versions of Windows — there’s a Windows RT-based tablet for mainstream consumers and a professional tablet for users with higher-end needs.
Both tablets feature a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display. They’re designed with what Microsoft is calling VaporMg, a “combination of material selection and process to mold metal and deposit particles that creates a finish akin to a luxury watch.” They also have built-in kickstands and a Touch Cover that folds out to expose a keyboard. In this form factor, the tablets essentially...

Microsoft Releases Intune 3.0 With Windows Phone Support

Microsoft Releases Intune 3.0 With Windows Phone Support

Posted on Jun 12, 2012 by MG1

Microsoft today announced the third version of Windows Intune, its cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security. Along with the new people centric capabilities and upgrade rights to the latest version of Windows, the latest version now includes the ability to download “licensed available line-of-business software applications” on Windows Phone 7.0 & above, iOS and Android devices. I think enterprise support is much needed for Windows Phone devices and as Microsoft’s own division such as Server & Tools adding support for it is a good thing. We may see wide adoption among companies across the world as Windows Phone 8 gets released with much more enterprise support.

Proof that Windows 8 may run Windows Phone apps

Proof that Windows 8 may run Windows Phone apps

Posted on Jun 07, 2012 by MG1

There have been rumors for a while that Windows Phone 8 apps would work all the way up to the Windows 8 desktop environment, but we haven't actually had any confirmation that this functionality would exist. We have known for a while that Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 would share the same kernel, which meant that this functionality was always possible, but n ow, we have a bit of proof that apps will transcend devices.
Ever since the Windows 8 Preview Release was released last week, code monkeys have been digging through looking for any interesting tidbits that could be gleaned from the code, and one came across a Compatibility Switch line which is checking "IsAppEarlierThanWindowsPhone8". Thi...

Nvidia's new graphics drivers are certified for Windows 8

Nvidia's new graphics drivers are certified for Windows 8

Posted on Jun 04, 2012 by MG1

If you had any reason to suspect that Nvidia wouldn't have fully-functional graphics drivers in time for Windows 8, you can probably dismiss them now: the company's new R302 drivers have been WHQL-certified by Microsoft specifically for the new operating system. That's the word from Nvidia's official blog, which explains that the R302 drivers are specifically for Windows 8, as earlier versions of the operating system will stick with R300 drivers. The new branch includes support for all the new WDDM 1.2 features (including things like stereoscopic 3D optimizations and flicker-free screen rotation), and Nvidia says it will support Nvidia 3D Vision for 3D games right away. Sounds like just the ...

Now available for download, the Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate includes a made-over Server Manager and replaces the Start Menu with the Metro UI. The Transformer tablets can dock into a QWERTY keyboard and the video invited the viewer to join ASUS as it announces "the truly incredible next transformations". The manufacturer's next video was released on Thursday in advance of an announcement set for June 4th at Computex. Considering the message of the new video, that announcement could be very interesting indeed.
