Nvidia releases GeForce 296.17 for Windows 8, others get 296.10

Posted on Mar 14, 2012 by MG1

Nvidia has baked a fresh batch of drivers, with two flavors covering Windows XP through Windows 8. Common folk running Windows XP, Vista or 7 should grab GeForce 296.10 as it boosts SLI performance in various titles, including Blacklight: Retribution, Dirt 3, Dishonored, Dungeon Defenders, F1 2011 and rFactor 2.
The update also either improves or adds 3D Vision profiles for Dear Esther and Deep Black: Reloaded. You'll also find support for the GTX 560 SE and roughly a dozen bug fixes across various applications when running on single and multi-GPU configurations (see page seven of the release notes for more information).

Microsoft to let Windows 8 web browsers play nice with Metro, Firefox version in the works

Microsoft to let Windows 8 web browsers play nice with Metro, Firefox version in the works

Posted on Mar 13, 2012 by MG1

We previously heard that Mozilla was planning a Metro version of Firefox, and now developer Brian R. Bondy has announced that the company has begun work on it. While that's good for Firefox fans, the real news is that the program is going to belong to a new, third type of Windows 8 apps: "Metro style enabled desktop browsers." We're still trying to figure it all out (and we think Microsoft is too), but from what we understand, this new, third type is an exception to Microsoft's rules and lets traditional Windows web browsers participate in the Metro experience. The third category would co-exist alongside Windows 8's two current categories — one for apps in the traditional, Windows 7-like env...

Dell knows this, and plans to be ready to go with tablet offerings for businesses on Windows 8 launch day. The information came from a Bloomberg interview conducted last week in which CEO Michael Dell praised the new Microsoft OS, and claims demand will be strong for a “secure Windows tablet that works with all Windows applications”.

Google revamps its Windows Phone app

Google released an updated mobile app for Windows phone devices, adding few cool features to the mix.
First of all, there’s Autocomplete, offering search predictions as you type. This in turn, will give you results faster, making you spend less of your precious mobile data.
Then there’s Voice Search, which removes the need to type your query. Simply tap the microphone icon and say what you want to find.
Finally, Google for Windows Phone can now access your location to provide you with nearby results. For location-specific queries this will save you a ton of time — you don’t actually care about coffee shops and Italian restaurants in other States – all you want to know is which one of them ca...

More evidence surfaces for Windows Phone 8 running on Windows 8’s NT kernel

More evidence surfaces for Windows Phone 8 running on Windows 8’s NT kernel

Posted on Mar 06, 2012 by MG3

Windows Phone’s next big update is truly going to be huge - it will bring the operating system to version 8 and along with that will introduce change to the very core of the mobile platform. More evidence has surfaced cementing the notion that Windows Phone 8 will run on the NT kernel, the same kernel Microsoft uses in Windows 8. This will mean that Windows CE is finally become history after more than 15 years of service.
In layman's terms, a kernel is the main element of an operating system bridging communication between apps and the actual hardware on a device. Windows Phone is built to be kernel-neutral, so the change won't affect existing application.

Microsoft also revealed it plans to update its Touch Mouse for Windows 8 around the general availability of the new operating system later this year. We tested out Device Center with a Microsoft Touch Mouse and found that two and three finger gestures are limited to the desktop for now. The thumb flicking gesture works in Metro to navigate backwards or forwards, ...

Asus will launch a Windows Phone “when it is the right time”

Posted on Mar 06, 2012 by MG1

Speaking to Pocket-lint, Asus said they were waiting for circumstances to be right to launch a Windows Phone.
"We are very close with Microsoft. When we think it is the right time of course we will do it," Benson Lin, the global head of Asus’ handheld division said at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The company however remains focussed on Android handsets at present, but Lin was pretty familiar with Windows Phone.
"In my pocket, I always carry two competitor products. At the moment I have a HTC Titan and a Galaxy Nexus," he said.

Asus global head says that that they will focus on Windows Phone "when it is the right time"

Posted on Mar 05, 2012 by MG1

Just looking over their current portfolio, there’s no arguing that Asus is carefully plotting its dominion in the Android space, and with many highly anticipated devices in the horizon, such as the multi-purpose Padfone, it’s abundantly evident that they’re building a solid army of Android devices to fight against the competition. However, we haven’t seen anything in regards to Windows Phone, well, except for a prototype unit that they concocted that ended up being only a preview handset to developers.
Interestingly enough, Asus’ global head of handheld divisions, Benson Lin, recently made it clear in an interview that they will go forward with a Windows Phone device of some sort when the ti...

Malicious apps beware, Windows 8 will feature a 'kill switch'

Posted on Mar 05, 2012 by MG1

“Kill switches” have become a standard part of most mobile operating systems. Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google each have the ability to remotely delete malicious applications from users’ devices without permission. With the launch Windows 8 later this year, millions of computers will receive similar functionality for the first time according to Bloomberg. Microsoft hasn’t spoken publicly about Windows 8′s inclusion of the feature, having only confirmed to Bloomberg that it will have the ability to remotely delete or update applications downloaded through the Windows 8 app store. Any software installed from a flash drive, DVD or through a Web browser will remain outside of Microsoft’s reac...

Samsung confirms Windows Phone 8 coming by year's end with elements of Windows 8

Samsung confirms Windows Phone 8 coming by year's end with elements of Windows 8

Posted on Feb 29, 2012 by MG1

Samsung can certainly be labeled as a company with much more invested in Android than Windows Phone, but the company has reiterated its resolve to support Microsoft's mobile OS and has confirmed some suspicions about the next big update to Windows Phone 8.
We have heard rumors for a while that Windows Phone 8 (codenamed Apollo) will be released in Q4 of this year, but Samsung confirmed that WP8 will be hitting by the end of the year. Samsung also said that WP8 will "increase the compatibility of the platform", which is somewhat vague, but we're hoping that means that we'll see an increase in supported hardware, possibly meaning higher-resolution screens, multi-core processors and maybe new ...

Voice calls on Skype for Windows Phone are supported not only over Wi-Fi networks, but also over 3G and 4G mobile networks. The app is well designed - while you’re in a call you just swipe to the left to get to the messaging window so you can simultaneously do both.
The application supports landscape orientation and it also allows for group instant messaging. It’s pretty simple to use too - you just tap on the live tile ...
