BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC? (Update: frequencies added)

BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC? (Update: frequencies added)

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

We're not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it's from RIM, and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we've seen of the 9860, aka the Torch. It's made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. Place your bets in comments below, and feel free to speculate about when this thing might actually ship -- and what color it might be when it does.
Update: Digging deeper into the filings, we discovered that RDH71CW supports GSM ...

BlackBerry Torch 9810 coming to Rogers

BlackBerry Torch 9810 coming to Rogers

Posted on Jul 29, 2011 by MG1

We’ve been hearing an awful lot about the U.S. carriers getting OS 7 BlackBerry devices, but not so much about us poor souls up north. Luckily, a few shots of Rogers in-store materials for the new Torch 9810 have slipped out. No mention of pricing, nor if Rogers will be getting the other OS 7 devices soon, like the Torch 9860, but it’s a safe assumption that Rogers and all of the major Canadian carriers (like Bell) will get at least a few of the new smartphones.
Athough the Torch 9810 looks an awful lot like its predecessor, it does bump up the processor speed to 1.2 GHz, improves RAM to 768 MB, and though the screen is still 3.2 inches and camera 5 megapixels, the display resolution is now ...

Verizon's Blackberry Bold 9930 unveiled early thanks to website blunder

Verizon's Blackberry Bold 9930 unveiled early thanks to website blunder

Posted on Jul 27, 2011 by MG1

Oh boy, we don't envy the Verizon web admin who made this particular mis-click. If you go to VZW's sales page for the Blackberry 9650 and click on the "Explore Features" video, you get an unexpected treat: a walkthrough not of the 9650, but of the unreleased Bold 9930. The specs are familiar, like the 1.2GHz processor, 2.8-inch touchscreen and Blackberry 7 OS. But at least we now have it from the horse's mouth that the new Bold Touch is indeed coming to Verizon. We've stuck our own rip of the video after the break, as the original will likely disappear any second -- much like that poor web admin.

BlackBerry Torch 9810 passes through FCC

BlackBerry Torch 9810 passes through FCC

Posted on Jul 19, 2011 by MG1

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 recently passed FCC certification, but that’s not the only RIM device coming down the pipe. The Torch 2 9810 has also made its way through the testing rigamarole, which suggests that it’s one of the multiple devices RIM has promised in the next month. The bands tested line up with AT&T’s HSPA network, so that locks in at least one supporting carrier for launch.
Like most of the next-generation BlackBerry smartphones, the Torch 9810 will have a near-field communications chip built in for contactless payments and other neat applications. There will also be a magnetic compass included which will enable augmented reality appls like Wikitude. From what we’ve seen in leaked...

BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?

BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG3

We've already gotten our grubby little mitts on it, and it looks like soon enough you too will be able to wrap your QWERTY-loving digits around a Torch 2. It looks like the display-centric BlackBerry just slid its way through the FCC, sporting 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM bands, indicating this particular model (listed as RDM71UW) is destined for AT&T. Obviously, even if this is in fact the Torch 2, an FCC filing is not exactly a confirmed release date -- so don't start lining up outside your local AT&T outlet just yet.

Boost Mobile officially getting the BlackBerry Style 9670 on July 20

Boost Mobile officially getting the BlackBerry Style 9670 on July 20

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

Okay, it may not be that surprising of a fact since rumors about it surfaced on the web last week, but the BlackBerry Style 9670 is now officially bound to join Boost Mobile's lineup of contract-free smartphones. Starting July 20, the Style 9670 will be available for purchase at a price of $200, and a fitting BlackBerry Monthly Unlimited plan will set you back another $60 per month.
The Style 9670 is not your traditional BlackBerry smartphone, at least not when it comes to its form factor, as it boasts a clamshell design reminiscent to that of the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. However, what you will find as soon as you flip open the Style 9670 is a full QWERTY keyboard just like the ones that RIM's...

BlackBerry Bold 9900 jaunts through FCC

BlackBerry Bold 9900 jaunts through FCC

Posted on Jul 13, 2011 by MG1

There’s been some worry that RIM’s next lineup of BlackBerry smartphones wouldn’t make it out the door before the back-to-school rush, but to back up rumours of a mid-August release, the Bold 9900 has recently passed through FCC filing. That’s usually a good sign that we’ll see the device within the next month, although hardly a sure bet. Some documents are dated far back as June 23, but have only been viewable recently due to the usual confidentiality period the FCC grants.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 was announced at RIM’s annual conference this spring, and is spearheading their new OS 7 platform. It’s a slim device, has a lot of fresh style to it, while still staying within the well-establis...

BlackBerry Bold Touch UK release date revealed

BlackBerry Bold Touch UK release date revealed

Posted on Jun 29, 2011 by MG1

Three and Carphone Warehouse have both estimated BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 UK release dates, suggesting that the touchscreen BlackBerry will arrive this summer.
Three has listed the hybrid QWERTY handset as arriving in September, while Carphone Warehouse is a bit more optimistic, expecting the Bold Touch to land in August.
RIM is yet to release a smartphone into the market this year, concentrating its efforts on the QNX-running BlackBerry PlayBook tablet instead.
Potential
The company's fortunes have not fared too well in the meantime, with its stock dropping like a lead balloon after poor financial results and the threat of job cuts imminent.
The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900, though, is not ...

RIM launches device simulator for BlackBerry OS 7 devices

Posted on Jun 22, 2011 by MG3

In addition to supporting new Flash developer tools in the latest version of the BlackBerry PlayBook firmware, RIM has announced new device simulators for upcoming, previously-unnannounced OS 7 devices so developers can start developing for them. The biggest thing is making the appropriate changes for screen sizes, which RIM outlined in a handy little table.

Seesmic Twitter app drops BlackBerry support, RIM's frown sags even lower

Seesmic Twitter app drops BlackBerry support, RIM's frown sags even lower

Posted on Jun 22, 2011 by MG3

The third-party app experience has always seemed like an afterthought for RIM. Lousy selection and a half-baked install process are just some of the issues plaguing BlackBerry owners and developers, but there's no blow stronger in the app world than when a dev drops support for a platform, after dedicating the resources necessary to bring a product to market in the first place.

RIM Delays Bold Touch 9900/9930 Until 'Late August'

RIM Delays Bold Touch 9900/9930 Until 'Late August'

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG3

Research In Motion today indicated via its quarterly earnings report that it is delaying the launch of its BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900/9930 smartphones. Both phones were scheduled to launch during the summer, but RIM said it has been hit with production delays that will force their introduction to be postponed until the "very late part of August." RIM also indicated that it plans layoffs starting in its second fiscal quarter, though it didn't say how many employees would be let go.

Blackberry Bold 9900 coming to Three UK in August

Posted on Jun 17, 2011 by MG1

We got the lowdown last month on the Blackberry Bold 9900: 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 640 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and looks that say "it's business time." Back then RIM said we could snag a svelte new Bold sometime this summer. Then came word that the handset wouldn't be available until September. Now, Three UK has put the Bold 9900 up on its "Coming Soon" page and indicated it's set for an August debut. Whew, we're glad that's settled, but there's one more thing we'd like to know -- how much is it going to cost?
