It's looking more and more like if it's good enough for Apple, it's good enough for Amazon. Not only has Amazon taken a note from Apple in building up content stores for music, video and books, but also in bringing those stores together in the ultimate content consumption device: a tablet. Granted, Amazon is using the hardware as a loss leader to sell content, whereas Apple uses the content to sell hardware, but the parallels are still there. Amazon could ship 5 million or more Kindle Fire tablets in the fourth quarter of 2011, one analyst believes. Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar on Thursday stated that Amazon likely has a huge hit on its hands, with fourth-quarter shipments that may surpass even the most bullish estimates. ”Checks indicate that they could ship upwards of 5 million units in the December quarter, which is just shy of half of Apple’s volume,” Kumar told CNET in an interview. The Kindle Fire isn’t even due to ship to consumers for another month, but already it has attracted its first patent suit. Smartphone Technologies LLC, which as far as we can tell doesn’t actually make anything, has sued Amazon for infringing on four of its patents. These patents seem to describe operating a touchscreen device by tapping on icons; apparently that’s a real patent.

Amazon will unveil its Android-powered “Kindle Fire” tablet on Wednesday during a press event in New York City.
